  • Kauai groms Kawika and Kai give some tips for nailing your foiling dock starts. For honest gear advice or to demo the best of breed, battle-tested gear visit: www.PakaaFoil.com. Happy to help guide you for the best wing and foil gear. Foil the Flow!
    When you are ready to try out a high aspect foil for more efficient pumping and glide look at the Konrad ST or GT series, Onix Osprey series or Cloud IX FS series. The Konrad ST (Surf-Thin) series has great ride-ability, surf-ability and awesome quality at the lowest price. These sets all have great glide and a solid pump and are also matched up with premium titanium Torx M8 hardware (never stripped a titanium torx M8 in 4 years, and no corrosion) and infinitely adjustable tails. Most other foil brands use cheap M6 hardware with a hex or philips head screw - GUARANTEED to strip. Onix, Cloud IX and Konrad have also withstood a beating thru lessons and big jumps in the rigorous Kauai waters for the last several years - and all held up awesome. Another feature not found on some brands is an adjustable tail (stabilizer). Just by changing the tail angle or size reduces the need for different size front wings for different conditions.
    Konrad Boarding www.KonradBoarding.com has hands down the best 'bang for the buck' alloy/carbon foil system - easy to learn on, hard to outgrow, super stable, top quality hardware, and rock steady connection points - all at half the price of full carbon sets. The modular front wing is SS for 'Surf Series', which is a medium aspect hydrofoil wing with a downturned profile and thicker through the chord. This helps for easier turning and recovery, and lower stall speeds. It's much better (and less frustration) to get proficient at medium aspect wings before moving to high aspect.
    The foil dock start process:
    Step 1: Find a long enough dock, that's low to the water, but has enough depth
    Step 2: Choose a good pumping foil like Konrad ST series - good medium/high aspect with longer span and less chord length - and a shorter/low volume board. Kai and Kawika are riding Konrad ST950cm2 front wing and 290cm2 stabilizer with 75cm mast. Boards are around 4'2 22L.
    Step 3: Run fast with the board keeping the foil just an inch or so below the water. Transition hands to the top of the board to spot your foot placement.
    Step 4: Jump on the board, back foot first, immediate back foot pressure, let foil rise up.
    Step 5: Pump away. Let foil glide down after apex of your pump.
    Common mistake: Board is too low when jumping on it. Have your board high enough at start to allow some glide down.
    Other tips: Get lots of speed in your run up. Find a dock with an undercut that the foil can go under, and with a corner to open water.
    Good luck! Give it a shot!

    Great video guys. Might be worth getting a microphone muffler to reduce the wind noise (they're pretty cheap).

    What an interesting toy! Almost to the level of craziness. A piece of advice - Trying adding audio later indoors can further improve the whole video quality.

      @@pakaafoil I just watched a youtube video of a guy narrating while pumping and he says 30 minutes is normal for him. I think one guy did 200km in a day (using paddle + some surf)

    Why couldn t i start from water with a floatable light board

    • @pakaafoil
      @pakaafoil  Před rokem

      The longer and heavier the board is, the harder it is to pump. The special new downwind boards are longer and have more volume, but built very light in the nose and tail. Those might be a good compromise

      You guys are good, but some advice. Be careful about wind. Microphones pick it up and really mess up the sound. So then go back and make sure your captions are correct. The automatic version isn’t correct here. Viewers do get frustrated with stuff like that, and then they go somewhere else, which you don’t want. But as far as actual content goes, this was a good presentation, with clear explanations and demonstrations. Good luck from Honolulu.
