Before I Forget is a great one from Slipknot, it's a song they won a Grammy for and it's a must listen, thank you Doug, loved your insight into the song.

Corey’s vocal range and styles are incredible. He can scream with the best of them and his cleans are melodic and beautiful. I’m pretty sure he has like a 5 octave range. Friggin insane
His newer CMFT and CMF2 and his acoustic covers show just how awesome his voice is even after almost 25yrs of screams and growls!
He doesn't have a 5-octave vocal range. He has maybe 2.5. His main talent, besides songwriting, is his ability to go deftly from screams to clean vocals back to screams, etc etc.
I love Doug's stank face throughout the entirety of the song... brilliant reaction!
Can I just take a moment to acknowledge that I love that you find the longer versions of tracks. A lot of the time the radio/music video versions cut out some of the best stuff for time and most reaction channels just watch the official music videos but you go out of your to get the full track and I love it.
P.S. the song is in a drop B tuning B, F#, B, E, G#, C# as is most of Slipknot's music and Psychosocial from your last Slipknot reaction is actually in drop A.
One of my favorite things about this song, that clang during the intro riff is a baseball bat hitting a metal drum.

Really enjoyed your take on this. And as a whole your approach to music and I guess life in general. To be open and to listen to stuff that is different sounds easy, but it's really hard. And I really dig your mindfulness and your positivity. And it always brings me joy to see your reaction to music I love. Especially when I'm a bit down or depressed by everything that's going on, your stuff here lifts me up again. As Zappa said "Music is the Best!"

Hey Doug you should give Before I Forget a listen. One of my faves.
Studio version… don’t know what is was about their video/radio versions that they cut them down, it’s not like they are long songs, or have any offensive elements that can’t be played on radio 🤷🏻♂️
Doug, try some Soundgarden songs. They use very cool and different meters, chords and progressions. And of course, there's Chris Cornell awesome singing and lyrics. I recomend "The day I tried to live" and "Black hole sun". Peace!
He did Black Hole Sun a while ago actually, you should be able to find it on the channel. Wouldn't mind seeing some more Soundgarden (or Cornell's other stuff) here though.

It is a full on Drop B tuning, its strangely one of their easier songs to learn to play (apart from those bloody pinch harmonics, I just cant do them!)
They actually play quite a few songs in Drop A, heavy as - recommend you try The Heretic Anthem from their seminal Iowa album.
Snuff or Vermilion are worth listening to!

This is the best Slipknot song ever, for me: flawless execution of the idea, brilliant composition, brilliant instrumentalization, amazing vocals. What's not to love!? It was also my introduction to the band. Doug you giving me feelings over here!

Hey Doug, we’re happy to have you teach us musical technicalities. Even if we’re not a traditional classroom setting, its a new form of learning and instructing. And we get to learn a deeper side of music from you and your expertise. Something not so easily taught by playing the same written pieces over and over. Remaining quiet and listening is a good learning tool for me. I would have liked more of it looking back on my musical education now that i’m older.
Please keep exploring Slipknot. Now that you’ve listened to their earlier stuff, seeing some of their newer stuff and the musical journey of how they create sounds and how they’ve grown as musicians is really cool. Great band!

I've been a metalhead for about 20 years. Slipknot was not my cup of tea. I was watching Joey Jordison drum cam videos because they are impressive as hell. But today, the way you interpret the song, the stories behind and the relationship with the song writer caused me to take another look and change my perspective I built when I was a teenager back then. We all have our ups and down and those are what make us who we are today. I am glad I can appreciate music with different perspective, with focus on details I have missed, and insights you gave built upon your experience as a music teacher. The sincere comments you have on this video are in point. I guess I can say on behalf of thousands watching you videos that thousands of people love appreciating the music we love for years or we discover the first time ever.
Would be fun to see you react to some Dethklok! They are a fictitious band whose members are characters in the Adult Swim series Metalocalypse, but their real life counterparts created some very intense and incredibly intricate compositions for the "cartoon" band. My favorites are Bloodlines and The Galaxy.
i love how those who really know music theory get into popular/electric music. Your appreciation and analysis adds a lot of depth and credibility to some of my favorite music. Thanks for posting!

I was a university lecturer as well, while working on my PhD. My burnout go the better of me and I am now fully disabled. I had similar problems as a teenager, nobody even thought I would finish school. I find myself going back to the music I listened to back then, including this. Thank you for being so open about it. I listened to classical music mostly in the years between, but classical music is mostly beautiful, and that doesn't represent how I am feeling right now. I feel the pain of the world, and I want music that represents that.
I'm not much of fan of Slipknot, but this cut is massive.

If you like this track, listen to the other tracks on Vol 3. It's the only Slipknot album I've been able to get into and I love every song.

Hey Doug- yes they are very much tuned all the way to drop B tuning! Many bands during that era utilized these open tunings and continue to do so. Even artists like Linkin Park included open tuning in Drop B on their first two albums and probably the vast majority of metal artists of that generation recorded a wealth of material in Drop C or C#

If you really want to see another side of Corey Taylor, listen to his live version of Snuff. Very raw, very heavy (emotionally), and a very different tone than the rest of Slipknot’s music. Will give you great insight into his clean vocals and the emotion and energy he puts into his singing.

One of my favorites! Gave me something to hang with when pain and frustration were so great I didn't know what to do . . . I guess a cathartic release of what was bottled up.
I went from classic rock to slipknot to BLACKPINK and I have not stopped smiling since videos are outstanding and all four of them are super talented and humble ring enjoyable.

The first song "PRELUDE" on this album feels like a suspenseful call to arms. The drum sound is very full and thick and filthy.
You should do the live take of Spit it Out from Download festival. Just ro see an insane live performance.

I'd highly recommend checking out some of their heavier songs as well. Such as, Disasterpiece, People = Shit, and The Heretic Anthem. But if you want a smoother entry into their heavy songs, I suggest checking out their self-titled album first.

Little known band from Germany with Uriah Heep's vocals, big 70's rock sound and I know you'll get a kick out of the chord changes. Fugitive is another great song if you wish to dive a little more. Love your takes on music I've been listening to for a long time, and the extra little insights. Much love bro!
"Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses)" [2004] is, in my opinion, one of SLIPKNOT's most mastered and accomplished productions. And probably, you perceived it immediately: the band SYSTEM OF A DOWN was very influenced by the art and the technique of musical composition of SLIPKNOT. Thank you, Master Helvering.
If you could react to Slipknot you can react to Emperor as well as they incorporated keyboards in their music. That'd be an interesting watch.
Unfortunatly Emperor is a bit far more extreme compared to Slipknot. Is Doug ready for the really heavy walls of sound, blastbeats and downright excessive malice tunes of Emperor?

Although it's not a Slipknot song, it's from Corey Taylor's other band 'Stone Sour' you should give ZZyzx Road a play. Beautiful song.
My favorite stone sour is Made of Scars. I like their stuff more than slipknot

You should check out Before I Forget from Slipknot! And I hope one day you can also try "happier" metal genres, such as Power Metal. There's one song from Stratovarius that I'd really love to see you react to: Elysium. It's a 18 minute Power Metal epic, and I'm quite sure it took some inspiration from Octavarium

I love this song!! Everything from this album is great. Another band you might like hearing to is Korn, e.g Freak on a leash. Kind of a similar vein.
I love that someone with a Hello Kitty avatar loves Slipknot. I agree with a next step for Doug would be for Doug to get into Korn for a Metal Monday.

You are correct they are in Drop B tuning for this track so they get that really low B powerchord on the post-chorus bit. Psychosocial is tuned down a full step lower to Drop A as well.
Also the flat 2 is very much a defining feature of metal. It pops up a LOT.

I believe the song is in Drop B tuning. Take an E Standard guitar tuning, drop all strings three half-steps to C# Standard, then drop the lowest string down to B. Like a Drop D tuning, the three lowest strings can be played open to make a power chord. (I'm sure you can play it with a standard 7-string guitar tuning as well, but I don't think they do.)
Standard 7 string tuning is B-E-A-D-G-B-E
So youd have to change the "regular" strings into c# standard
@@flamethegame1 Decapitated plays in drop B on 7 strings, so it can be done. However, Slipknot uses 6 string guitars.

This is absolutely drop D tuning, it was a really popular things for bands in the genre around this time to do. Korn even does some drop A tuning at times with 7 string guitars
Hey Doug, wanted to say thank you for your videos, I feel like I learned a lot from them.
I don't think that your "duality" that you talked about is a "small one" at all.
When you've worked all your life towards building a path of your dream that you even started threading for a while it's more than natural to feel a sense of longing when that gets taken away. And while maybe not as life-threatening as some other scenarios I can imagine, satisfaction in life is an absolute top priority, not to be diminished by any means.
I think you could get back in the college gig with absolutely zero trouble, given how knowledgeable you are about music. I think that's always a choice

5:39 I remember thinking the same a good few years back & now you have bands tuning down to like F# even on a 6 string, or even down to like E (an octave below "standard E") with a 7 string. 😂

It's a soft melodic one, I love the key, scale, mode, chord progressions they use. Sounds very unique

Yes, they are tuned to drop B, as are most of their songs. Though, they do tune to drop A, and alternative drop tunings for certain songs.
There are lots of metal bands that actually push the boundaries to even double drop D.
Yup this song is in Drop B. The song Psychosocial which you reacted to previously is Drop A. Slipknot alternates between these 2 tunings
Nailed it, this song was recorded in drop B, However Their guitars for live shows, and most material are in drop A

Yes: they play regular 6-string guitars, but tuned down to Drop B (so tuned to C#, with the bass string dropped a further two semitones down to B). You have to use a really heavy string set to get any kind of tension at that depth which plays a big part in their guitar sound.

You mentioned that you werent sure if you've heard someone drop tune their guitar like that. Mick Gordon's The Only Thing They Fear is You is double drop D, if im not mistaken.

in regards to tuning, the guitars are tuned to Drop B, jinjer play in Drop A - anything below that is definitely played on a 7 string, such as Lorna Shore

A guitarist here. Slipknot has been known to play in Drop B. I think there are some songs they play in different tunings, but this is definitely a Drop B one. Btw, the next song I would recommend from them is Snuff.

Could you maybe do a "Mick Gordon - BFG Division" or "Mick Gordon - The Only Thing They Fear is You" review? I'm veerry curious what you would say about these? They are very heavy, synthetic metal which were produced for a shooter game and are truly unique.
They typically tune in drop b or a. Probably some of my favorite slipknot songs that I think you should check out are the blister exists, three nil, sulfur, before I forget, and dead memories.
This one is in drop B. I think only like 10 songs are in Drop A
It's not drop B...it's standard B on a 7 string.
