People always talk shit on lars, and I mean sure he isn't near the level of a lot of metal drummers in terms of technicality and stuff but he plays his role in the band solid as hell, like even though his style is super simple it definitely helps give the songs that kind of driving force that is part of what makes metallica so good

Lars was looking for a band and James was looking for a band and their adds kept on showing up in the paper without much else going on in the "looking for" section. Then they ended up talking to each other about it. Lars wasn't a very good drummer by any stretch back then, but he had decided to put together a band and his pure sheer of will has kept it going for 40 years now. They could have called it "game" so many times over the years, but Lars hasn't allowed them to do that... He is the engine behind the scenes that keeps the train rolling. He isn't the most talented drummer in the world, but his business acumen is legendary.

It is how your past and decisions build you and have a result over your future. And it is "" that you can't escape your past and your fears build by it and that the future has already been written by your past decisions. The song itself puts the story from the POV of your "life" (future and past).

The more you want to analyze the lyrics, the better the song is in my opinion. Metallica songs are not just one note angry. They all need something very specific and they took extreme measures to make sure the lyrics had meaning! I hope this dude actually bothers to read lyrics with out listening to the music first to try and see what is being said. A lot of it is up to interpretation, but no it is not Shakespeare lol.

Having said that, I couldn't help but notice how you mentioned how "We" meaning those other than you, didn't have lyrics when we first listened to them, in this case Metallica. Well you might be surprised to find out that back in the day, CD's, and even cassette tapes, came with a tiny booklet with all the lyrics of all the songs within them, so indeed some of us did have the lyrics when first listening to Metallica/whoever, but do it with the lyrics/without, however you wish, but it's only doing yourself a disservice if not...

I've always interpreted this song as being about losing control of oneself because of addiction or some other inner demon. Perhaps the slow creep of the sum of all of your small compromises and misdeeds eventually taking over to become who you are. You can't escape your past.
Also, I strongly recommend you review the S & M version of any future Metallica tracks you review. Mind blowing. Good ones to consider (excluding songs I think you already reviewed):
    Wherever I May Roam
    No Leaf Clover
    Bleeding Me
I dont think there are S & M versions of these songs, but they are total bangers that you will love:

I was reading the lyrics when I listen to them, maybe not the first time but later on. Lyrics are important in Metallica songs but you can just go with the feeling as well, you're just missing out sometimes.
Not everything written is literal, a lot is abstract like poetry and it can mean a different thing to different persons even if the writer had a specific idea in mind. A lot of artists never say what their creation is about to let people make it their own. That's art.

Put your emotions and make them flow just go with the feeling you want people to feel it's just a great push of emotions that's what makes it so great I know I feel it and that's what I like to feel like it ain't about just hurting nobody it's just a rage that comes out of you that makes you feel good like a drug

Actually I usually did have the lyrics in my hand while I was laying on my bed listening to it on my Walkman. When I got older I’d pop in a new album while I made myself some food with my favorite metal magazine ready to go while I listen. That was my weekly payday ritual when I was single.

Fair point on unexpected unions between tone and title. It had a tendency to make sense in a James Hetfield kinda way. This one was a particularly catchy song in the capture of a self-defeat theme.

The difference between listening to rap lyrics and metal lyrics is simple. Basically, rap lyrics are having a conversation, talking to you. Metal lyrics are poetry, riding the waves of emotion.

James, an outcast from a strict religious home, had to skip classes that challenged their beliefs. His mom died of cancer (no medical care in their religion) Many songs reflect the anger & pain of those early yrs.

As a metalhead- best explanation I can give you is: Metaphors. Rock music generally takes heavy emotions and uses metaphors to express anger, hurt, regret, outrage etc.. back on the day we couldn't 'google' the meaning. We would read along with and memorize the lyrics, and then just... ponder ... soak up the words and just sortof FEEL what they meant. All Rock is very visceral (rock n roll was spawned by blues and gospel really, so it makes sense it would be visceral)

Years ago there was a documentary series on VH1 called “Classic Albums.” On the show about Metallica’s Black Album, one of the producers said of this song, “I was laying on the table in the dentist office about to get several teeth pulled, and the last thing I heard before the anesthesia put me under was the ‘Sad But True’ riff. And that’s when I finally understood what kind of music that was, music for pulling your teeth out.”
