    When I was a child I got really sick. Blizzard of 1978. My mom stayed with her best friend. My Dad made it in. You couldn't travel. My temperature was over 104. No way to get me to hospital. He made me a hot toddy with tea whiskey, honey, and some lemon juice. He helped me drink it. It's the only time I saw him cry. He slept on the floor beside my bed. My fever broke, and chicken noodle soup did the rest. Do you know that people chastised him for giving me whiskey. It saved my life. I grew up around farms and that incident started me on the road to herbal medicine!

      My Mom would roll a lemon to soften it up. Squeeze the juices from the lemon into a pot of water, cut lemon up, place in pot. Bring to a boil. Place in your cup hot then add whiskey and honey. Drink this when your ready for bed. Drink then rub your chest with a little Vicks Vapor Rub get under the covers an sweat it out. It works every time. Been doing it for years! It helps too if you have a vaporizer it helps with breathing. The new ones come with a slot for Vick's vapor strips.

    The father of a friend taught me equal parts of the whiskey, lemon juice, and raw honey. No spices. Keep in frig. Take a tablespoon or two as needed. Works very well.

    I had whooping cough as a child and whenever I got a sore throat, I would cough until my toes curled. Not only was the duration long, but I was very loud when coughing. So as not to wake the house up, my dad kept a teddy bear container of this mixture on his night stand. When he heard me coughing I would get a small spoonful. Knocked me off my toes for the night. No I did not turn into an alcoholic, nor do I drink period unless taking a small teaspoonful at night till this day. He called it his Italian silencer😂

    This is what the Ticos in Costa Rica make when someone starts to get a cold or flue or bronchitis. They cut 4 limes in half. (I think they were Key Limes) and squeeze all the juice as much as possible into a cup. Then they heat the juice so it is hot then stir 2 tablespoons of raw honey into the hot juice until it melts. The warmth makes you feel so good when sick and really helps with a cough and stuffiness. This is on my Natural List for remedies. Normally I would have been sick for at least 2 weeks but I was well within 5 days. Love my Tico neighbors. Always learning something new and so many fruits that I have never seen. I havent tasted any that I do not like. They are all delicious. I am adding this too to my list because it helps with the sore throat.

      I've had asthmatic bronchitis half my life. When I started using doTERRA Lime essential oil I still get colds, but never had bronchitis in the 6 years I've used lime oil. I think it breaks up the mucus and helps as expectorant too.

    A few years ago I decided to make a sore throat spray. I added some elderberry syrup to spilanthes extract in a small medicine bottle with a spray top. It worked very well and the grandchildren liked it. A good sleep remedy for children who have a cold is a warm glass of milk with a spoon of honey and a chunk of butter at bedtime. I remember my mother giving this to me and it was soothing and I would easily fall asleep. I used the same for my child.

    My mom used to, and I did with my kids, give us hot tea honey n lemon or if really bad heat a bit of honey with lemon in a shot glass and take warm as a cough syrup. Then nothing to drink for a bit to let it work. Also, gargle very warm salt water before bed and as needed as a very strong expectorant. These came from my grandma who was born in Sicily and had all of her children there. My grandfather brought them over to America as a veteran of WWI. I hated ginger as a young person, but have come to appreciate and enjoy it in recent years. I will enjoy incorporating many of the herbs and spices you are recommending. I may even incorporate some of my double dipped moonshine maple wine 😂

    One of my brothers used to have croup occasionally back in the '50s. I have no idea where she got the idea, but it worked. She would pour a tablespoon of whisky and light it with a match. When it burned off, there was about a teaspoon left. She let that cool and gave it to him. It worked pretty good. I don't remember her giving it to the rest of us, so maybe it was last resort. I have however eaten a teaspoon of sugar with a couple drops of kerosene on it more times than I can remember; it worked OK. My favorite sore throat tea is made from spilanthes blooms and sipped while very warm; nicely numbing.

    I did try it with the lemon, but I have such a sensitivity to lemons that even in small amts., it was hard for me. My husband uses the lemon mixture. My batch consists of dried orange slices instead, 1 tsp ginger powder, 2 cinnamon sticks, 2 star anise and 1 crushed garlic. I use whiskey, hubby likes the Rum for these prepared medicinal blends. I use the same amt. of honey. It works quite well in calming things down for our use during the day. A small amt of Whiskey at night helps keep the cough at bay, allowing everyone to sleep better. LOL We don't drink either, but I agree, alcohol has medicinal benefits when used appropriately.
    I like the idea of putting some into a cup of hot water for an evening tea. I tend to drink a tea with ginger, honey and Echinacea when I feel even a small viral load attacking my body.

    Normally, I put ginger (garlic too but separate jar with honey) in a glass jar to sit in honey for a few months. I went to grab my honey for this recipe and discovered I forgot to get more and was out. So, I cheated and took the honey and ginger that had been in my fridge for 3 months. It had become very thick, turned almost white, not sure why other than I might have gotten carried away with how much ginger lol (my fav). Turned out really good, had a nice flavor from it :) Thank you sharing all the great information!

    I used to always keep Drambuie on hand for that purpose - it was originally a medicinal concoction before it became popular as drink, and always worked really well. But it is really expensive. I had a little cinnamon JB bourbon (I adore anything cinnamon flavoured) that I bough about 6 years ago, so I have used the last of that to make a small batch - extra cinnamon-y now, lol. We are heading into the back of summer here, so it will be nice and infused by the time winter hits. Also have some honey infused fermented garlic hanging out at the back of the fridge.

      @@RainCountryHomestead Gosh...wish that would happen to me!!! (It'll be a while till my son's wedding though - he's only 14! - Guess I'll have to buy my own!) Lovely recipe though - I'm working my way through my elderberry syrup that my daughter and I made. Works a treat - but maybe needs brandy!! 😆

    I set soime to steep just now. Thanks, Heidi. I forgot I had some dried ginger in the spice pantry! yahoo!
    Mr Rosehaven gets upper respiratory stuff. (Thank the good Lord, I don't get sick). Here's the recipe for a steam tent that works for him. Don't forget, use only filtered or distilled water, not tap water.
    Large pinches of dried: nasturtium, sage, tarragon, and rosemary. Pour just-off boild water into a glass or metal bowl, let sit for about 30 seconds. make a tent with a nice heavy towel and have the congested one sit under the ten, breathing in the vapors. Make sure the water isn't TOO hot, or the delicate mucous membranes could be singed. Make sure to have a handkerchief ready!
    This has worked for him every time I've made it for him.

    Thank you Heidi, I'll be making this to add to my farm-a-cy 🥰
    I've been told that adding alcohol to boiling water evaporates/reduces/removes the alcohol which is why it's safe for children and pregnant women. Thoughts?

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  Před 2 lety

      The thing with this particular blend is t he alcohol is what gives it its numbing affect and boiling it would destroy the benefits of the honey making it nothing more than sugar

    • @KarnivoreKaren
      @KarnivoreKaren Před 2 lety

      I think you may have misunderstood what I was asking. Does adding it to hot water destroy/nullify the alcohol?

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  Před 2 lety +1

      @@KarnivoreKaren Ah. sorry, you meant ADDING boiling water, just adding hot water would not remove the alcohol, you would have to boil it to remove it, which would not be desirable for this. But back to my other reply, if someone is trying to remove the alcohol, then they would be better off to just make something similar without it such as just blending the lemon and honey (1:1) add the spices and allow to extract for at least a few weeks to get the most from those spices.

    I don't have the ingredients for this but I think I will need to go shopping. I don't know if I could handle the whisky though so maybe I will go with the rum. Is the cloves and star anise just for flavor? I don't care for cloves and I have never had the star anise so I probably won't use those. Thank you for the great information, I have a nice stock of herbal remedies thanks to you.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  Před 2 lety

      No, none of the spices are just for flavor and in one part of the video I believe I mentioned that the star anise is very good for preventing and curing flus. In fact, the synthesized version of the compounds in start anise are used in Tamiflu
