They probably WERE enough fans of Star Wars and Marvel to keep them succesful but they butchered the hell of the newer shows and movies.
Yeah that's a good point!
I mean I'm a Star Wars fan, but the content they made for the platform doesn't hold up compared to old classics like Star Wars The Clone Wars
@@GabrielCarusetta Same for Marvel. After Endgame I was excited about seeing Doctor Doom or Galactus as the next big bag and instead we got Kang. Also they sure took their sweet ass time to make new Daredevil content.
@@patrickswasey5301yeah been feeling a bit burnt out from MCU content lately too…
@@patrickswasey5301bad take, seeing as how Kang has MASSIVE history in the comics that rivals Doom. And Galactus doesn't ever make sense without introducing the FF and Surfer alongside him.
I'm so tired of hearing the term "fatigued" to describe the failings of Marvel/Disney. It's not fatigue, the writing is garbage, and they focused on too many characters that the fans don't give a crap about. One of the worst let downs was the 4th Thor movie which would've been amazing had they just copied the comic book storyline, but they combined it with Jane being Thor storyline, and wasted one of the best actors of the last 20 years in Christian Bale. A lot of people need to be fired from Disney/Marvel because this failure to realize what fans want is very incompetent.
Yeah that's a good point! Fatigued might be overused, and if the content itself was better we probably wouldn't be having this conversation
The Bob Iger approach was successful but extremely short term. Building your brand around a small number of IPs can be extremely profitable short term but doesn't take into account that audience taste is always changing. Whoever comes in next is going to have to take more risks on quality original ideas rather than 'buy the IP, first, figure out how to make a good movie second' approach.
Yeah whoever takes the mantel next has alot of work to do, and will need to take some big risks to get the company back under control
it's a well deserved implosion imo and i have no idea how disconnected you have to be from the actual art to think people will roll up to theaters for content generated solely to sell merch. and make theme parks. good analysis as always gabe
Thanks Nathan!!
Netflix (just like any other streaming service) puts out a lot of garbage content. But they're probably the only ones who balance the bad with the good. For every bad Netflix movie/show, there are equally brilliant ones (Bojack Horseman, Altered Carbon, Mindhunter, Peaky Blinders (in the US), Stranger Things and the 3 Body Problem). They made smart decisions of hopping on the K-drama and Romcom bandwagon that has a huge paying audience. The range/diversity of content makes them the sole winner in this race. The remaining companies just playing catch-up at this point. Disney+ trusting their very limited IP was a gamble that did not pay off 3 years down the line.
Yeah I agree, Netflix just makes SOO much content, some of it is actually good although I think most of it is pretty mediocre.
Good point about k dramas and romcoms. I think a huge reason Netflix is so successful is that they care about having a global presence.
i like how they create original content in different countries
those netflix local offshoots are like their own separate studios and add to those countries’ pop culture
for example in south korea and turkey
In a way I admire the way you’ve threaded this minefield, but leaving out the politics of this also makes you miss the point to a degree. Bob Iger didn’t come to Disney’s rescue: He’s part of the problem. He chose to put his company into a world of pain by choosing sides in a political battle in Florida where it should have just kept its mouth shut, which was more or less Bob Chapek’s approach. The creative direction of its movies is clearly related to these political endeavors, and the public has caught on.
Yeah I wasn't as familiar with the political angle, but I think that's a really interesting point! I think the way that they have become political on certain topics feels very inauthentic, in a way that clearly a ton of people are turned off by
Really enjoyed your video! Any thoughts on WBD and Max? I ask because they seem almost the opposite of Disney, with a streaming service that investors don’t believe in, but steadily growing IP that looks really promising (Barbie, Dune, Wonka, …).
Thanks! I may make a video on them soon actually!
I think they’re in a really interesting spot, since Warner Bros is a legacy studio with a lot of clout and Barbie was such a hit.
I do think their CEO David Zaslav has a bit of a bad reputation within the creative community of Hollywood though so I think that’s one thing holding them back
Awesome, will keep an eye out for it. Best of luck with the channel, I’m rooting for you 👍
@@nohaybandaninguna Thanks!
Wait question wasn’t Max reported to have made a profit? (Becoming the only streaming service besides Netflix to be be profitable?)
Technically they did report a profit! But this was through financial engineering.
Basically, they added on all the money from HBO that comes from cable, which isn’t streaming, and so it’s not really fair to say that Max alone is profitable.

I’m a huge former Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars fan. Got married many years ago at WDW. Attended Disney Institute twice.
I canceled Disney+ three months ago. Not looking back. Tried to like the channel, but OG stuff aside, the new movies and TV shows are terrible. Laughably terrible. Pointless, meandering drivel. I’m done. Thank you, current Disney leadership, for ruining so much that I loved.
Can they bounce back? It’s too late unless someone smart comes in and starts completely over and ignores all the new garbage. Even then, I would not place any bets on a Disney comeback.
Very sad.
Woah! I think that's a testament to how bad the content has been, if someone who was as big a fan as you is no longer interested in what they are making, thanks for sharing!
Yeah. I saw Star Wars on opening night in 1977, and it was the first (and only) time I forgot I was watching a movie. I remember getting lost in the film and believing I was actually there. Decades later, EndGame was an incredible conclusion to a 20+ film journey, something I'll never forget.
For years, I taught customer service and used Disney extensively, touting how the company always listened to the needs and wants of customers. That's no longer true. And I forget to mention how much I loved Indiana Jones. This last movie was just so inferior and so disrespectful to our memory of this character and this franchise.
It's truly incredible to see what's happened in just a few years. It's like the mission of Disney leadership was to do everything possible to destroy these beloved cultural icons. I would never have believed this if I hadn't lived through it and witnessed it.
@@CarrollRoge That's so cool!
Yeah it's crazy how they became big in the first place by catering to their hardcore fans, but now it seems like they've left them behind...
Nice video, great for a small channel
Thanks! Appreciate it!
good luck on your journey
Thank you!!
Glad to see you critiquing, you're doing a good job letting us know what is going on in Hollywood!
Thanks!! Appreciate it!!
As a so called expert you should have mentioned the woke agenda which is the primary cause for Disney's flops.
Then there is the lazy and bad writing.
Disney I finished unless they fire all their woke employees.
If you have looked at The Boys then you would have knoe that the cause it not super hero fatigue. People are woke fatigue.
What does woke mean
What does a woman mean? You know the answer, everyone knows.
Leaving out politics is a change of pace, but that makes this video sadly incomplete, because it seriously is a part of the problem, if you like it or not.
very pleased to see what is going on
get woke go broke
i canceled my subsciption last month and don’t plan to return
i am fed up with their political agenda and preaching
Good job recapping relevant recent history on Disney and it's current precarious state. What I did not hear, and I believe has had a significant impact on Disney's current lack of success, is the recent shift from great story telling to pushing a woke agenda. I, and others I know, gave up on Disney after tiring of the bombardment of wokeness. I watch movies to be entertained, not hear political appeals and fringe cultural values. Disney needs to dump their wokeness if they want the general public to believe in them again for family entertainment.
It's just woke fatigue
