I'll say one thing for Hopper, it's the only character I've ever seen that has jiggle physics on their eyeballs
It's been a long time since I originally played this game on PSX... A lot of people have fond memories of the first thing they ever raised, but I couldn't even tell you what that was. Just about every monster I ever raised back then, I completely forgot. Except for Punchy, a little asshole of a Hopper who cheated on drills constantly, lost most of his fights, didn't unlock my hot spring, and died losing me money. Here's to you, Punchy. I hope you're burning in hell right now.
I started on the first game on my ps3, because it could play ps1 games, and I had gotten it as a gift from a family friend. If I recall correctly, my first was a basic Dino. By the time I got a copy of 2, I knew somewhat what I was doing. By far one of my most memorable monsters from back then was my first Joker, named Thirteen, which died immediately after an expedition to get it a Gold Peach to try and keep him alive. He got me the Peach. He cheated, he never behaved, but by the end of his life, he at least had me as his liked thing, and was my first monster in 2 to make it to S class. That was around the time I really started to get into MR as a franchise. Thanks for being such an asshole, Thirteen. I wouldn't have gotten into these games without you along the way.
My first monster was a Suezo/Hare named Buttman.
I know it's a little thing, but I love the style of the data for the techs looking like they were written on a notepad, it looks really nice
This man has almost single-handedly breathed new life into this 30 year-old game!
Now I remember why I never found Hoppers to be bad. Running down the clock was my favorite way of playing MR2 as a kid!
It's been over 2 decades since I've heard the Zoboomafoo theme and I'm glad it took an analysis video on my favorite monster to reawaken that memory for me. Hats off to you sir

For the longest time prior to joining the Discord, I always thought I was doing something wrong with raising Hopper and that's why I had such an awful time with it. Then after doing so, it turned out I wasn't alone and that upon looking closer at Hopper's data that the lemur's niche just barely works in-game. Real shame it is and I wonder if MR2 had just some more time in the dev room that maybe, just maybe, Hopper's techs could have been tweaked enough to not all be bad.

I think the new design and font used for displaying techs' stats looks nice, but reduces readability. I'm not sure if it's the size, font, or all caps, but something about it is making it hard for me to quickly and easily read it.
I really do enjoy these Rancher Rundowns! Your channel is my favorite way to relive my childhood monster rancher memories.
Yeah I think I agree, I just experiment on small elements every time. I'm not sold on it but I can't improve without trying new stuff. Other people really like it so it's maybe something I'll keep doing but I'll try to refine it for the next one.
I love each and every one of these videos you do. I'm learning so much about this game the more I see it. still not sure how people manage monsters with such great statlines, but I know im the type to have to try the harder training methods for myself to see those kind of results myself to fully get it.
As to Hopper, I was wondering why he was considered like he was. this video really spells it out. he's a monster that sadly is meant to run clocks like i like, but in doing so just can't hang in a lot of situations...

For a monster that hops about a lot (pun intended), I'm more surprised it doesn't have any kicking techs. A dropkick from a Hopper would send an opponent right through the wall, I imagine.
Anyways, a suggestion, if you don't mind: you should add your opinions on what the monster should improve upon in order for it's intended gimmick to actually succeed. In Hopper's case, what changes do you think should be made for it's gimmick to actually be viable in AIvAI matches? Seeing as you're quite the veteran on MR2, I'd love to hear your suggestions on these things.
Hopper may not be the best monster out there, but the way it references Ken from Street Fighter with it's jump blows is honestly cute

Yeah i didn't want to mention the frog punch bc it could easily just be a shoryuken reference and the flick jab is pretty generic but I tend to be in the same boat where I think you could make a pretty good argument that his entire kit is lifted from Ippo.

MAH BOY HOPPA! I was like everyone else and used to hate Hopper until DX came out and I had to get gud! Mustachios now is my favorite monster.
Actually his low strength is a blessing in disguise for unlock his tech chains early, how about him in hard mode? He is viable?
He's a lot stronger in hard mode
As someone who raised one to get the water monsters, I _hated_ it. And honestly, it feels really half baked and weak due to the low amount of techs. I respect those that enjoy it, but it ain't for me at all.
Honestly I still really like Hopper but after raising one for myself, I can definitely understand why it never came back in Monster Rancher 3 and onward

I feel like Hopper belongs to a failed archetype that's trapped a *lot* of monsters in the depths of low-tier status. Monsters who specialize in Skill without packing much in the way of powerful single attack skills to back them up like Mocchi, Hopper, Ghost or to a lesser extent Tiger (edit: but not really tiger). I feel like the developers' intent with these monsters was to use a sort of "death by a thousand cuts" strategy where they're meant to wear you down with hit after hit after hit using their high accuracy to guarantee consistent damage over the course of the fight...
The problem is the system mechanics don't really enable this sort of playstyle. They may generally have pretty respectable guts gain attributes, but trying to use dozens of small attacks means that you'll be constantly freezing your guts regeneration and giving your opponent more and more of a guts lead as the fight progresses. These monsters will probably do extremely well against evasive glass cannons but countering one archetype while being completely vulnerable to more balanced or tank builds isn't going to fly. They make good NPCs though, I guess.
Tiger is top tier but yeah that applies to him in mr1

❤ Strongest monster in game would be Hare. You can summon a Hare with all stats at 200 with the Big Bang skill. All you have to do is raised it attack, speed, skills stats and it would be end game. Don’t need to learn new skills just do big bang and 1-2 punch for finish kill.
Yeah the Hare spawn based on Hammed is completely busted lol
