Alan Schaller: Streets in Mind - SmugMug Films

- From the shadows of a cityscape, street photographer Alan Schaller composes narratives out of the chaos around him. Limiting the noise of his surroundings, he imagines the stories that spaces want to tell. Searching for contrast-a striking person passing in a crowd or a flock of birds suddenly taking flight-Alan captures the harmony of life’s unpredictability by simply observing.
Directed, Filmed, and Edited by: Anton Lorimer.

ok but why is this video cinematography so good?
Incredible images-both Schaller's still photos and the moving images. Probably the best looking movie about street photography I've ever seen. Beautiful.
Erik Tjernlund thanks Erik!
Wow thank you for the compliment Erik! Anton is amazing.
Yeah that was a great video Allen, great images I'm just getting into the black and white. But you City people have all this opportunity I'm in western Oklahoma small town America. I'll keep watching your videos very interesting and informative.
What?! Really surprised he is just 4 years into the game. I’ve been following his IG for almost 3 years now, and his work always felt ripe unforced right from the start.
Just another reason to keep on following Alan.
@Enrique Not at all. He's great. Absolutely great.
@Enrique your life is overrated
The camera work and editing in this is phenomenal
Yes, color matrix is epic, all speedups and slowmos perfect...I am amazed
I'm so in love with Alan's work.... plus the Aton's eye behind the lens shooting this... masterful
not gonna lie, already see this video more than 20 times, simply inspiring, simply amazing
I did some street photography while I was in China and I have to say that it was very liberating. The idea that you can create art from just walking or driving down the streets is amazing. Some of my favorite shots have come from this attempt at street photography. Great film, well produced. Congratulations!
This is the best video about photography I've ever seen! It shows the essence of street photography so clearly and precisely!
Thank you for this amazing piece!
Well Said!!!
This videographer actually has potential become a great street photographer
He is incredibly talented, with an amazing eye, we agree ;)
Wow! 4 years. You are crushing it Alan.
We couldn't believe it either! He is so talented.
The filmmaking is so well thought-of, balanced, smooth and in sync with the photographer's work, that it makes it actually over-the-top class value, without being too flashy. Truly beautiful, some frames were even better than the photos! Really enjoyed watching this. Keep it up!
Wow, what amazing compliments, thank you so much!
@@SmugMugFilms I really enjoyed the film and I am doing photography since 7 years, but never thought of doing street. Now i am inspired to do it.
Love Allans bag...a great video...need to come to Toronto (T.O.)

Bravo Anton Lorimer for a beautiful short film that manages not only to reflect but to amplify the style and substance of the photographer.

I have been following Alan Schaller on IG for quite sometime. What a brilliant photographer he is. Always coming up with the most wonderful shots.
This video will make me now look at busy city areas with a different perspective. The low and high angles with the focusing in on one minor detail in a very busy environment is a very inspiring, thank you smug mug for the new view !

Thank you for made the video, I just started on it as a hobby but I discovered how wonderful it is, still getting problems to capture what sometimes my eyes sees, frustration and happiness seems to come holding hands. But somehow it is a relief listen a professional talking about sometimes not getting the shot they want, thank you again for share so your experiences and information.
Thank you so much for featuring one of my favourite photographers! It is such a learning experience to know what goes inside their head when they create such amazing photographs. The production level of this video is fantastic.

This is fantastic piece of art. Both video and photos.
Great work, inspiring, thanks!
Brilliant!
Woahwoahwoah
Art at it’s finest 👏🏻
I just came across Alans work on Flickr, and am stunned by it. His photos are about the only ones I've seen on there that are really genuinely visually interesting. They are sensational, his ability to sense space, condense a composition, evoke drama, include powerful graphic elements, while making it look effortless and spontaneous. They capture your attention! Even though they are digital, they have that deep contrasty old school feel like Capa's, Kertesz'sor even weegee's pictures. I VERY rarely dish out compliments willy nilly, but Alan is a truly gifted artist
There must be 100s of photographers in NYC walking around everyday. But this is the real deal. Wow very nice and professional street photos.
I be next lol
Beautiful video, very well composed and touching from the beginning to the end. Love it!
Thank you Michael!

Excelente video!! Gracias
Great video and love the images...
What a great video. And I can relate so much with Alan. I am a professional musician that needed an escape from music, so I bought a camera and started taking pictures 2 years ago. I never knew that there was a genre of photography called street photography! And I start to walk the streets and observing everything and taking pictures. I loved so much that I am now studying photography in college! What a change photography bring to my life and music. And your video is an inspiration. I will just shut up and watch it again 😊
Absolutely amazing video! Excellent atmosphere!
Impresionante me encanto!!!!
amazing
Amazing !!!

A gorgeous video of an amazing photographer!
That's very beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Superb photographer and excellent filmmaking. Well done!
Amazing film! Thank you 🙇♂️
So happy you enjoyed it!
Alan, I found this deeply inspiring. I shoot "street-style" as a utility photographer - i.e., shooting whatever is needed for my yoga sangha and community. I was a staff photographer 1972-74 at Runner's World and still (rarely) do sports. Point being, your approach is mine whether for sports, in K-8 classrooms, scheduled shoots or day-long events: it's always about finding ways to prepare the whole "chain" of photographic tools including heart and mind, by releasing the ego's desires and being as completely in the moment as possible. Like you I find it a wonderfully expansive, quietly moving experience. To recap, this film was a sweet, wonderful discovery. Thank you!
We can't tell you how happy it makes us that we've inspired you. That is always the goal. We hope we can continue to!
Hhh
Just awesome. 👏👏👏
I love black&white photo and video! Cool :)
Glad you enjoyed the film!
incredible !
Very impressive videography and photography! Story well told!
"A conveyor belt for photographing" -- brilliant observation Alan.
Sometimes overwhelming. Other times frustrating.
Yes, music and photography have much in common -- If there are no harmonics then even the most beautiful scene will be flat and atmosphere-less.
I agree with your approach- as you put it "space" // as I put it "location location" are essential to a well created street photo.
Cheers from Chicago ----
