The Liberation of Limitation - with Alan Schaller

  • Alan Schaller, an early adopter of black and white photography in the digital age, was among the first to get his hands on the new Leica M10 Monochrom.
    Narrative and reduction - two essential factors that are the hallmark of street photographer Alan Schaller’s visual signature. In dense, atmospheric images he manages to capture life in all its shapes and shades.
    Outstanding images are never a matter of chance. They require dedication, courage and the will to do whatever it takes to see a vision realised. As an icon of contemporary black and white photography, Alan Schaller’s distinctive visual style works as a universal language understood around the world. Equipped with the new Leica M10 Monochrom, Alan wandered grey and rainy London, shedding light on the liberating quality he finds in limitations.
    Since the beginning of his career, Alan Schaller decided not to look for colours, using a focal length of 24mm for the most part. These decisions helped him develop an eye for the interplay of light, geometry and humans.
    “Experimenting will only get you to a certain point.”
    To decide early on how and what he wanted to shoot, ignoring all other photographic opportunities, has enabled Alan to define his own niche and learn how to master it.
    “You need courage to know what your direction is.”
    The concept behind an image is as important to a photographer as the image itself. Only a body of work that shows consistency creates recognition.
    “You have to go out and engage. Only then will it come to you.”
    Alan Schaller’s images often seem to convey a deeper message, but don’t expect an exact explanation from the photographer - he likes to leave them open to interpretation.

As someone that has often gone down the rabbit hole of ‘too much’ gear, I find myself finally letting go of extraneous gear and settling in with the Monochrom and 2 lenses. Really talented artist and a gorgeous video that compliments well. The Monochrom seems nothing short of marvellous. I also have to say that it is refreshing watching a promo video for a Leica Product where it doesn't feel pretentious or have a product that feels over milked by the photographer just for the sake of promoting a new product. It's a good camera with genuine words and even greater photographs. Well done!

    Alan is a master of composition and the high contrast look of his images is achieved mostly in camera by exposure, choice of subject and knowing how the camera sees the light differently than our eyes. I wonder if the monochrome sensor plays a hole here also, giving him more information to play with in post.
    Shaller's work inspires me greatly. Thank you for showing us more about his mindset as a street photography.

    Makes sense. But just some times for me. Then I switch and LOVE the combination of colors... or something nearly monochrome in... blue... the pastels of Saul Leiter for instance. Then again, the B/W photography of a film like THE MAN WHO WAS NOT THERE (DP: Roger Deakins!) then the mad colors of the final sequence of 2001 or APOCALYPSE NOW or a film by Wes Anderson. Brillant pics, Alan, for sure. But I would NEVER give up the opportunity of a RAW pic that let's me decide if I want to keep or lose the color. The picture will tell me, if it is better this or that way.

    The main problem now with street photography is a lot of photographers who show there work in galleries sadly use models so it's not real street photography in the historical sense; the reason for this is copyright and lawsuits against the gallery/ photographer. So although the photographer legally owns the image the person within the image they don't and by showing this without their consent can be liable. That's why a lot of galleries reject or get very nervous of street work which is very sad for all of us who like street photography.

    I am missing the original Leica Monochrome project where Leica had collaborated with Jacob Aub Sobol; there was a soul in the project (Arrivals and Departures) itself and of course in Sobol's pictures where the observer could take time to enjoy and most importantly feel the atmosphere. However, here, I only see images which are highly post-processed via Photoshop. Half of the images are blacked out. Yes, today's instagram people will love it, but I think people are being amazed by the high contrast characteristics of images but not compositions itself anymore.

    • @mariailicak4777

    • @Walkercolt1
      @Walkercolt1 Před 4 lety +2

      You are absolutely correct in your assessment. Sadly, today, with all the terrible images from i-phones and such, there are VERY,very few people who know what a good photograph (in color) looks like. Taken to black and white which an abstraction of and abstraction ( to paraphrase the late Ansel Adams) and the high-contrast is better attitude takes over, I think. The extreme post-processing is too much like spending days in the darkroom and 50 sheets of photographic paper to make one "good" print. Composition and shapes juxtaposed in unusual ways are the greatest strengths of black and white photography. I wonder what Preston Seaton or the late Brett Weston images from the Leica M 10 would look like?

    • @localframes
      @localframes Před 4 lety

      @@Walkercolt1 I couldn't agree more than that. Thanks for your wonderful analysis. Sadly, photography is turning into a "image making" with photoshop and other available software; and sadly people are thinking that it is the true photography. To be honest, no one needs such camera to take images like in this video. even iPhone and a good software can handle that.
