Blue Pikmin should be medics. Aside from saving drowning pikmin they could be able to spray water and extinguish pikmin on fire, shock electrocuted pikmin back to life and wash away poisoned ones
I imagine that the more you have them, the more effective they will cure a crowd of Pikmin. One can't do for many.
But it will take away slot. This may add the management/puzzle in how many number for each type you should have.
I believe there’s 2 reasons for the blue mistreatment.
1: Unfortunately, redundancy. I hate to say it because Blues are my favorite Pikmin from a visual perspective, still are, but as the games have gotten easier and Oatchi, Ice, bulb, and Winged Pikmin allow alternative roots around or over water, blue Pikmin have just steadily become less necessary or useful. I do still wish they would lifeguard other Pikmin though or get some sort of new mechanic.
2: Marketing. As for why blue Pikmin are so frequently in distress in the marketing, well they are the only Pikmin with a mouth, a fish like one at that in a perpetual blank frown. This makes it much easier to portray distress in their face unlike for the other Pikmin who have nothing but 👁️👁️, 🔴🔴, or 🔵🔵 to work with
Wouldn’t exactly call Blue Pikmin redundant. They’re still the only Pikmin type that can venture underwater, unlike Winged and Ice. You’ll still need them for treasures that are underwater

Heck even in the submerged castle, where they see alot of use, they get shafted by the bulbmin

4 days later I’m about 80% through Pikmin 4 and I can happily say that Blue Pikmin are eating well this time round. They basically have an entire area and a half to themselves

You'd think having a "Blues only" cave would be their time to shine, but then you realize that for almost the whole expedition, you're at the mercy of a hostile invincible enemy. Which you can only finally kill on the last floor, _but only after you've traded away some of your Blues for far more useful Purples before the fight!_
For a Blue Pikmin fan, this must feel like being forced to make a deal with the devil!
You can always use the bulbmin for that. Shame the game never teaches the player that you don't need 100 pikmin all the time as the bulbmin won't spawn if you have a full platoon.

@@JP_Soupyeah. In a game with only 3 slots available, blues actually got that spot a lot in my game. Not only are they the only ones that can go under water, but winged Pikmin offer no use since whites are faster and there are no treasures only winged Pikmin can get. Not only that, but winged Pikmin have negative with the damage nerf, and while exploring under water oatchi will hold the rest of your Pikmin, meaning he won’t even be useable most of the time. I put them in A tier in 4
agreed, blue's got a huge buff thanks to the large underwater areas and oatchi can (at first) swim above so no underwater help (and even when he does, oatchi is only one doggo, even with ice pikmin around the blues are still really helpful
it seems the worst one is winged this time around (i just wish blue got a damage buff underwater but that's just me)

@@Nikowo1610 Naw, blues didn’t affect winged Pikmin, whites did. The fact that even with air shortcuts whites tend to be faster is what did them in. The only benefit of winged Pikmin is that if you didn’t clear the area behind you, they’ll fly over most enemies, but since overworks enemies don’t respawn it’s hardly a situation you’ll ever see.

I feel like MAYBE the blue pikmin constantly get thrown/falling and hanging from leaves is kind of to symbolize water in a way? The blues alway hang from the bottom of leaves sort of like water drips off of them, and the falling blues could be rain? idk just an idea.
Blue pikmin did get a GAME DESIGN buff. Which is the fact that you get them in the first area + there is a completely submerged area that only allows non-blues during the second half of the day (Serene Shores). I found that blue pikmin are more useful than red/yellow because there is so much water.

People still want to use Reds/Yellows in all the areas covered by water but don't use them because they simply can't use them. Your suggestion does technically make blues more useful, but I wouldn't consider adding more water to be a healthy way of tackling the fundamental problem.
Buffing blues in a way that is healthy for the game overall requires a change that makes people want to use blues even in situations where they aren't required to use them. The community has come up with plenty of possible ways this problem can be tackled, and listed below are just three of them:
- You could cause blues to receive some kind of buff both while they're in water and for some amount of time after they leave water. SilokHawk's droplet example works like this, but there are other ways you can take this idea included but not limited to buffing their movement speed and buffing their attack speed.
- You could make blues harder to shake off. Not only are they the only type with mouths (which could be used to cling harder to an enemy), but they also clearly have the extra experience when it comes to hanging onto things for dear life as shown in the promotional art, box art, and short movies.
- You could lean harder into the now-removed ability of blues to save drowning pikmin by essentially making turning them into medics. They automatically chase pikmin that are suffering from a condition that is harmful but not immediately fatal (Fire, Poison, Ice, Fear, et cetera) and use water to cure the condition. You could even take it one step further and give blues immunity to all such hazards.

Pikmin 4 "hard mode" involves not using Oatchi for anything but smashing Vases/ Jumping. In this mode, blue pikmin are very useful. Do that.

@@MySnugglePuppy they're alright when there's like sprinklers surrounding an objective... But right around the corner is usually a craftable sprinkler twisty doohickey (the name escapes me atm) which just gets rid of the water making them pointless again 😅. However their is a cool interaction where a fire bulborb is put out from sprinklers but that's got nothing with the blues

The problem with pikmin 4 is that even if they came up with a compelling use case for blues other than just "level design said it's time to use blues", you can only have three types out. So even if blues got a cool feature like red's attack buff or yellow's throw height or etc, you'd still only want to bring them if you NEED them.
Nintendo just hates blue in general, most character or enemies are rarely blue in all of their games.

@@ArcticJack2 I used Oatchi ONLY for vases + jumping... which made blue pikmin extremely useful. Also made the game fun + challenging.
Oatchi can get items underwater, but you’ll still need blues or else you’ll be super slow at getting everything.
Dont forget the final area has water blues drown in (mud). Im not even kidding they really didnt need a nerf...
Pikmin 3 / Deluxe was my introduction to Pikmin. I do want to play the first 2 eventually. However, Pikmin 4 is the priority.
I’ve beaten Pikmin 4 and blues were really useful in this game. (Mild spoilers to follow) Winged Pikmin are rare (I think there’s literally 2 pink candy pop buds in the entire pre-credits? Unless you go play that cavern over and over) and blues allow quick traversing with the water shortcuts which is so important when you have limited Pikmin allowed out on the field, and there’s a good portion of the map covered in water (one in particular has significant underwater portions. It’s a really common hazard in caves as well). The ice Pikmin are limited by candy pop buds for most of the pre-credits and it’s sometimes feasible to use them as a shortcut? But normally it’s not worth having 20 Pikmin just stuck in the water doing nothing to create a shortcut when you could just use blues instead. I think there was like 1 cave I used this feature in and that’s it aside from getting the blue onion lol
And they have mouth so unfortunately are great for showing terror 😅

I remember the first time i saw a blue pikmin; a cold afternoon, spent at home on my pc. A friend of mine posted a screenshot of their pikmin bloom score. I asked what game that was, and they told me the name. Without much staggering, I downloaded the game from the App Store. As I booted up the game, I was enchanted by the loading screen art, although at that time, didn’t take much notice to the blues. This changed when I received a nintendo gift pikmin, a blue. That pikmin quickly became my favorite, and remains in my squad until this day.
I think it’s similar to the whole Waluigi thing. It seems that they treat Blue Pikmin like how they treat Waluigi. As jokes or as comic reliefs. I don’t think Nintendo hates them at all but they definitely do enjoy making fun of them and trolling a lot. Either way Waluigi and Blue Pikmins will always be my favorites even if they’re treated as jokes. No matter what Underdogs are always loved.

Pikmin 4 did a better job at creating environments for Blue Pikmin. They still, sadly, are debatably outperformed by Winged and Ice Pikmin in any environment not explicitly submerged.
I would argue they outperform wings in all but one area of the game, as pathfinding improvements have made Blues a LOT better at getting back to the Beagle, And Faster too, plus with the lack of Wing Pikmin things like the Bamboo Gates and tussles that wings can pull up, the only real thing you’d use wings for is flying over enemies, which is kinda pointless due to their slower movement speed compared to 3
