  • While swapping out the FMF Powerbomb header between the two, 2007 KLR 650's, I noticed that the KLR exhaust port could be cleaned up quite a bit so it would match the factory exhaust gasket. These two mods improved the overall performance of the bike throughout the RPM range, and allowed the engine to rev more freely all the way to the 7500 redline and beyond.
The exhaust port was the same on my other 2007 KLR650. This looks like a common issue with the bike.

Thanks for this review. I did a search as I'm interested in the Camel Adv easy clutch arm for the KLR, and supposedly there are fitment issues using a Powerbomb header with Camel's clutch cable bracket. Anyways, I had a DR650 with the 790 kit and TM40 carb. The Powerbomb on that bike did indeed reduce the low end response contrary to what dyno charts showed. It was obvious in terms of snap and getting the bike to wheelie. And, rev-out was improved. So there was a shift of power up in the rpm range. My preference was to actually use the stock header to retain the low end snap on that bike. If I had a stock bike I might have felt different. I just got a 1999 KLR, and I'm still learning the bike (only 20 miles on it so far). One thing is for sure, the bomb bulge definitely takes the edge off the exhaust note. On my DR the muting effect was slight but undeniable.

Great job on the simple, cheap mod to the KLR! I really like how you continue to take steps to reduce some of the weight of the KLR. Very practical mods are always great. Glad to hear you are out riding and doing the things after being sick! Great info as always VW!
    Cheers!

Good morning DOC650, Great to hear from you, and thank you for the stickers in the mail. Yes, the lone wolf indeed. I just couldn't leave the KLR "as is" and now have a much better bike. I was pleasantly surprised as the bike ripped up to 8000 rpm getting on the freeway with little effort. No way I could leave that exhaust port as it came from the factory. Rain all day yesterday, and with that, summer is done for 2021, and the epic weather in AZ starts. Take care my friend.

@@verbalwidget7267 Morning VW! Glad you like the stickers! They just seemed appropriate for "our" kind of riding. Went on a great long ride on Sunday with Rob (Tiger 900) and his wife on an Indian Scout and really enjoyed the scenery and beautiful weather. Glad to hear it is finally cooling down in AZ. You are the master at tech tips that are not costly. You really have the KLR kicking ass! So good to hear you back to yourself and feeling better!
      Cheers My Friend!

@@doc650adventures Top of the morning DOC650. Stickers were a nice surprise, thank you.
Very cool you were able to get out and everyone had a great time.
I just finished my coffee and will suit up and hop on the DR650 and point it in some random direction??
I’m not 100% yet, so it will have to be a forest road for now, but it’s just about getting out.
Yes the KLR is coming along, and is good scooter. With the cooler temps, and this Covid thing going away I’ll get that rear fender conversion done, and I’m excited to get the USD forks on the DR650.
Well the DR is calling and the daylight is burning. Have a great day.

VW - Great info on the KLR for sure. It's funny how small little "this' & that's" let these air pumps continue to give you a little more - here and there. Sounds like it made quite a noticeable difference. Just got home. Gonna change boots, throw on the shin pads (thank you very much) and go out for a much needed therapy session !!!
Thanks for the new video. Always like "hearing" from you !!!

Thank you OW, maybe the video will help some KLR guys unlock some free HP in there motors, and make their ride more enjoyable. Great day for a spin that's for sure. I had my knee/shin pads on when doing the test ride in the video, can't beat the extra protection. Enjoy the ride. Take care, be safe.

Nice job, cool riding weather now. Perfect time to get out and explore. Just had surgery, now I can’t do much.

Hi Desert Wolf. Wishing you a complete and speedy recovery from your surgery. Yes the great riding weather is here in the SW. I hope you won’t be laid up long and are able to get back on the bike soon. Take care.
