What an incredible review and detailed comparison! Keep it up, and you’ll be one of the go-to channels around! You blow 90% of the other “reviews” out of the water, as you actually talk about details and potential scenarios, vs many just list the technical spec differences from the manufacturers website. Thank you!
thank you for the kind words. I will try to keep them coming.
I have three ghost whisperer jackets. A non hooded, a hooded and now the UL version. The only reason for grabbing a UL one is because of the price MHW is running them at. $150 was a good deal and I really wanted a super compressible lightweight jacket for travel and climbing while also traveling. I used my hooded ghost whisperer all over the Alps and it was super awesome. My wife and I like to travel during the winter and spring months throughout Europe, having a jacket that I can throw into my daypack for if the temps drop is something I really want. I didn't get the UL for a general day to day jacket, it is a purpose built jacket for bringing something along for when you need it.
I am also waiting on the clone from Decathlon in their Trek 100 jacket, that is going to be my daily knock around jacket, my other ones I keep with my climbing gear that I don't use for anything but when I climb.
I like you keeping the voice down outdoors, respect! 60% off sale on both 12/15/22. You made my mind up…thanks. UL. Yep, only the colors that didn’t do well are left and if you hate the color it will sit on a hanger, UL in gold and a Smartwool under and a rain jacket over, perfect.
Great channel, man. And thanks for the review on this. Literally have both jackets in my cart right now and this helped me decide which one to go with
Salute to your great sharing my friend! Lot of love and respect from a solo mountain hiker from the Lower Chitral District of Pakistan!
Great review, first was on the grams advantage of the UL, But I can only agree with you on the details you uncovered for me, they are such that only at a foodbar of difference you have so much better features available. Thanks a lot
Kudos for all that effort, super proffesional, cant belive youre only at 3k
Thanks! glad it was helpful
Such a detailed review. You should contact manufacturers, they would probably send you jackets to review.
Thanks man made the choice easier
Thank you for this! Been on the fence about upgrading, saving me money!
Your welcome. Glad it helped
Great review.
I never understood the purpose of these low fill weight jackets. They're barely warmer than fleece and lack any kind of durability. Might as well just wear an r1 air. Rab Cubit or the stretchdown all the way, the weight penalty is well worth the additional fill weight and the significantly better material. Most people who are worried about a pound have more than 1 to lose in the gym.
Just wanna say thanks for doing these reviews. I'm new to the technical jackets/gear scene. This helps a lot, especially considering how pricey it is try different ones.
Any plans on doing softshells? Namely the Arcteryx Gamma lt?
Thanks!, yes I do have a few soft shells up already like the atom lt, proton lt, and nano air. Ill see if i can get my hands on the Arcteryx Gamma lt though
Love your jacket reviews. Have you had to chance to try the Trek 100 Forclaz for Decatholon? It’s essentially a budget friendly option to the GW
thank you. i have not, but i will look into it looks like a good one to compare. thanks for the suggestion
@@BackcountryRenegade Thanks! Yeah that would be an awesome comparison review. many hikers, backpackers love the Forclaz Trek 100 for it’s insanely cheap price and the fact that the materials/insulation rival many well established outdoor brands
How do those jacket compare in term of warmth to micro puff from Patagonia?
Gw2 is a bit warmer the micro puff. Check vid here:

Hi. I'm sorry but I don't know English. Can you write the difference between them? Which one do you recommend?
Awesome review. Is this jacket as shiny on the surface as it appears in the video? I want to grab the Hardwear Ghost Whisperer 2 Vest. It only comes in black which is fine, but it does appear to have shiny surface on it.
yes it is a bit shiny on the outer shell
Could that be a deal breaker? It looks like one of those high end fashion puffer jackets or vests.
@@Adamas11 really a personal preference. I didn’t mind it. I do have lights on it so it is a bit more shiny then normal.
@@BackcountryRenegade Got it. I’ll probably pull the trigger. It is a very nice vest. Mountain Hardware offers the Mt Eyak 2 vest. It is more matte and a lower price point. Not as high performance per se (600-fill down and heavier weight vest overall).
Hi, very detailed review, i am going to buy one, but i am unsure about size, (i am 175cm x 68 kg) do you wear S size in this video? how tall are you?
thanks in advance
I wear i size small in this, im 167 cm and 64 Kg
How’s the sizing on these? True to size or should I order larger?
They are pretty true to size.
Can you treat the UL to make it more water resistant with Nikwax?
not the down, but you could do the shell, but it already has a dwr treatment
@@BackcountryRenegade ok. I thought they had a product to add some water resistantcy to down also; picked up the UL on sale but now maybe wished I got the non UL
What size are them? Medium or small?
Both are small
GW2 is my pick!
Great jacket. My preference too
Great review but ruined by the constant sudden change in audio volume.
There's not more down in the new whisperer. I don't care what the company claims. The Whisperer 2 doesn't have quite the fill the original had. I own both. There's not much difference at all, but there IS a difference. Just an FYI...
With that being said, I had on my original Whisperer in Minnesota during the winter. It, a Monkey Man mid layer and a Merino base layer kept me warm in 10° weather with a pretty heavy wind. No hardshell required(for me) The Whisperer can be an extremely warm jacket when layered correctly.
In this comment, do you say the whisperer 2 has not the fill of the original, or that the UL whisperer has not the fill of the original ? Or that the UL has not the fill of the whisperer 2 ?
@@quenta3179 I don't own the UL. I have an original Whisperer and and Whisperer II. This video says the Whisperer II supposedly has more down(loft) than the original, but I'm telling you from experience, it doesn't. I love both jackets, and it's only a tiny, tiny difference between the two. I can't tell the difference by wearing them. They're equally warm. I can, however, look at them side by side, and see the original is slightly "puffier" than the new version. It's a negligible difference at best. Hope this helps!
I prefer the straight lines on the baffles on UL, otherwise I think the 2 is a better product for less money.
A few grams doesn't hold that much weight. Pun intended.
