  • Glen Scoville was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan on December 8, 1902. His great aunt, a concert pianist, began teaching him piano when he was three years old. Around 1910, he relocated to the Chicago area and lived there for several years. He took three lessons on the saxophone when he was a young teenager, then taught himself the rest. When he was about 16 years old, he joined the group "Aces of Melody" with Bob Gillett, Kyle Pierce, and Les Branch. During a gig at the Edgewater Beach Hotel, members of the Friars Orchestra (later known as the New Orleans Rhythm Kings) who were playing in another ballroom there, asked Glen to sit in on a few numbers with them. In 1922 and early 1923, he played for some of their recording sessions in Richmond, Indiana. In 1930, he moved to Hollywood, California in search of work. Once settled there, he wrote and recorded several songs with his musician friends during the 1940s and '50s. Glen passed away on March 25, 1995 in Normal, Illinois.
I'm very honored and proud to be able to say that Glen Scoville is my great grandfather. As far as I know, his songs recorded during the 1940s were never released to the public. I have what I believe are the only vinyl copies of his music, and I have decided to digitize and share them with the world. His music is too good to be kept secret!
"The Wind In The Chimney" was recorded in 1945 in Hollywood, California. It was co-written with Glen's friend Bob Porter. On this recording, Glen is playing the organ and singing.
