70 MPH Illinois Central Death Star SD70 Leads Disabled Amtrak City of New Orleans 4-15-2024
zhlédnutí 84KPřed 3 měsíci
The locomotives on Amtrak's northbound City of New Orleans had some sort of mechanical or technical problem overnight on April 14, 2024 while traveling through Mississippi. With no other Amtrak units available to take over, Canadian National supplied former Illinois Central "Death Star" SD70 No. 1027, still in original paint, to pull the train the rest of the way to Chicago. This is likely the ...

Very nice chase!
As the son of a Chicago suburb Trainman, Peotone was a regular stop on Summer weekend daytrips.
Awesome footage
I was a Brakeman switchman for the Illinois Terminal railroad around 1977 based out of Decatur Illinois
For 2 weeks I was the breakmen on 200 203 where I got to be what's the engineer John Harrison and chappie as a conductor
The US doesn't need HSR since Amtrak has locomotives that can run over 200 mph.
Saw that while driving to work near Tolono, IL. Thought it was really odd and then saw rail fans taking pictures/video at two different crossings I went by.
30 mph at best !
Heh. Little faster than THAT. The size makes it look deceptive.
It happens more often than you think. In the past, I have been lucky enough to see Norfolk Southern locomotives leading the Carolinian and Crescent due to faulty Amtrak locomotives. On the Crescent the Amtrak locomotives had to be left in Charlotte to be repaired. Due to that and other issues it ended up being over 12 hours late to it's final stop in New York City.
Wait, why is an IC loco still kicking around?
It takes a good set of tracks to be able to run that speed. Love me some trains!
That's not 70 mph
IRM has done a stellar yeoman's job of preserving the Illinois Terminal's legacy especially with the Peoria, the sole surviving interurban sleeper and the open end observation car.. Shame the Illinois Terminal streamliners could not have saved. Nice restoration on the line car.
Does my heart good to see the ghost of Casey Jones highballing again........there are a few of these units and some EJ&E power hanging out in the Joliet yard, see them often, but THIS is how they SHOULD be seen...
Those Chargers must be crap
I've never seen that before! Thank you for the video!
???
The 100mph, glorious orange and brown version will never be topped.
Thats is awsome. Great catch
Hauling the mail,, damm..
Noise POLUTION .
I rode that train in the 1980's and so much of Arlo's song rang true. An absolutely brilliant description of that era.
Me too ! Early 80’s 👍😁
"Riding on the city of New Orleans, Illinois Central, monday morning rail....'
I wonder when AMTRAK will start doing like the rest of the world and go with head/tail power arrangement.
Former CN railroader, engineer, conductor. That did NOT look like 70mph. Who has the radar gun?
So how fast?
That’s a solid 60 easily
Riding on the City of New Orleans Illinois Central, Monday morning...
AMTRAK My Favorite One
I used to ride that train to and from Champaign, IL, in my U•of•I days.
I just imagine how symbolic it is for an IC loco to be pulling that route on those rails again. You know those engineers from 100 years ago are smiling down on that train today.
I don’t think so, if anything, they’d be smiling at CP 2816 high balling
@@NashRailfanHigh balling right into the back of some lady's skull 😬
@@NoThankYouNoName that’s the lady’s fault. Not like the train can stop on a fucking dime 😭
@@NashRailfanProbably would have helped to have some sort of crowd control at those packed grade crossings. Especially when most people have not been anywhere near a steam engine while running. CPKC isn't known for their safety though
@@NoThankYouNoName it’s hard to keep a crowd that large and long under control with how little authority KCS and CP have down there. It’s extremely difficult to. And besides the point, same shit happened to UP 844 and no one is making jokes about it like 2816.
I just had to do this: czcams.com/video/fF1lqEQFVUo/video.html
I’ve ridden the Empire builder a few times over the last year. Whenever I ask Amtrak staff about the new Siemens locomotives, they never have anything good to say. The last guy a talk to, last weekend, called them junk. Said Amtrak is having to acquire old freight locos to pull the new Chargers around. I hope they work out the wrinkles and get these new ones working reliably.
Amtrak no track
Man...i had to watch that THREE TIMES! 😲
I haven’t stopped watching👍👍👍😁
Great catch 🖤🤍
7 cars and 7 restless riders 3 conductors and maybe one sack of mail
ILLINOIS CENTRAL, MONDAY MORNIN RAIL!!! 🎶
So, who operates the train CN/IC engineers? Amtrak engineers, or both?
Welded rail is astoundingly quiet. One doesn't have long to wait when the train passes at 70 MPH -113 KPH!
Actually, I thought the locomotive would be painted like the Death Star in Star Wars.
Great Catch!
From WC, Wow 70 miles an hour, I hope it didn’t fly off the tracks! Oh wait passenger trains in Germany do over 200 miles an hour! Never mind!
Yeah, but those passenger trains in Germany are not being pulled by a freight locomotive...
70 Mph is better than sitting still
This needs more likes and views
What Kind Of SD70 Is That? It Looks Like An SD40-2 Or A Geep
That's the standard cab version, they don't make SD70s like that anymore
Great catch! Thanks for sharing
Well the Illinois Central And the Southern Central freight Gotta keep on pushin', mama You know they're runnin' late
The Doobies, singing about Miss Lucy, some of my favorite music ever.
Where shot?
Look out, here comes she’s coming, look out there she goes she’s gone
Ironic that a twenty-five-year-old locomotive had to bail out a pair that aren’t even two years old.
Wait a minute. TWO virtually new locomotives and they BOTH broke down?
They sure don't make them like they used to...
If one is running, all that HEP load will severely limit acceleration and limit hill-climbing ability. While Metra have put as many as 11 gallery cars behind a single F40PH, the acceleration is sluggish and they are run like this on limited-stop trains only as a result. Local trains that are 11-12 cars during rush hour alway have two units.
@@JohnGeorgeBauerBuis Interesting. Thanks.
Only 7 cars?? Not much Head End Power required. One of those Siemens could do that. So again, how did Amtrak lose 2 locomotives on the same train?
Those Chargers are very touchy. Was on Empire Builder when a fuel additive level got low, and protocol from Siemens required the engine to be shut down (not sure why, probably warranty would be voided otherwise). We were less than 1 hour into terminal destination (Chicago).
Why can’t the crews of Amtrak just keep the “fuel additive level” with their regular maintenance?
Probably emissions certification related
Fuel additive. You could be talking about DEF. Emissions related. This was added to highway trucks many years ago and now these days I’m seeing it on diesel locomotives too
