Estonian Wargames: How NATO is Preparing Estonia for Potential War with Russia

  • NATO is preparing Estonia for potential war with Russia by beefing up the country's cyber security and conducting rigorous military drills. But as Foreign Correspondent reporter Eric Campbell discovers, NATO is more a provocateur in the eyes of many ethnic Russians, who make up a quarter of Estonia’s population. Subscribe to Journeyman here: www.youtube.com...
    Since gaining independence in 1991, Estonia has seen huge economic and technological advances. But underlying its prosperity is renewed concern about Russian occupation, 25 years after the end of the Soviet Union.
    "If you don’t want a war, prepare for a war", says Kirsten, one of thousands of reservists who signed up after Russia annexed Crimea. The setting of NATO's annual war games, Estonia has become symbolic of the growing divide between Russia and the West. Yet for many Estonians, the threat from Russia feels local and real, as Kirsten's friend Maria explains: "Russia is next door to Estonia, so then I thought, 'why not come to protect like our family or country or nation'".
    These two women are not old enough to remember the days of Soviet occupation, but many do. "I remember the Soviet times. I remember the Soviet Army and I don’t want that back", Kaupo Karuse explains, "most of the world doesn’t understand the cost of freedom". Professionally, Kaupo is a software consultant, a member of Estonia's thriving computing and tech economy.
    As well as preparing militarily, Estonia is pushing cyber defence to the limit after suffering cyber attacks - which many blamed on Russia. However, Estonia's Russian community play down any tension, as Vladimir Cherdakov says, "if anyone says that Russia is a provocateur, I don’t believe it".

      How is (was 2017) Estonia "Free" : They have no sovereign Foreign Policy, they have no Sovereign Currency, they have no Sovereign Trade Policy, they have no Sovereign Military. All of that is decided in other countries by citizens of other countries.
      Estonia SSR was a Consitutional Republic, they had more control over their lives in the USSR than they do in the EU.
      They may LIKE being in servitude of EU but it's not Freedom.

    Interesting how they use the G-3 rifle like we still largely do in Portugal. I feel glad for them, the G-3 is a very fine, reliable and accurate rifle that won't let you down. The Portuguese Armed Forces use it since 1963 and built thousands under licence; only now it is being slowly replaced by the FN SCAR. There's nothing wrong nor outdated with the G-3, and if you must chose between 7,62 or 5,56mm I believe you're better armed with the heavier calibre.
    We're all together against the Russian arrogance! Stay sharp. 🇪🇪 🇵🇹 🇺🇦 😀

      G-3 Rifle is used by the National Guard/National Milita, made up of volunteers. Actual defence forces and conscripts use Israeli Galil and in the recent two years we have started to go over to the M4 platform with the new R20 RAHE.
      Fun fact: G-3 is affectionately called Row (as in boat row) by conscripts because of it's size and shape.

    There's probably even more people volunteering and training in Estonia ever since Putin's latest Ukrainian adventure started on February 24th 2022. I'm happy the three Baltic countries joined NATO during those few years while there was a window of opportunity open. If they had waited for too long I'm afraid that by now it would be too late. Russia really wants them back and they don't care what the United Nations says about it. As members of NATO however, I don't think the Russians will risk it.

    • @1GTX1
      @1GTX1 Před 7 lety

      The problem is if Russia moves in NATO can't defend Estonia it would be defeated in a day or two, it's as simple as that, the only question would be how many casualties would there be on both sides, would war last few days or more, and how much of Estonia would be given to Russia.

    • @alexcartwright5230

    • @alexcartwright5230
      @alexcartwright5230 Před 7 lety +2

      NATO would defend Baltics as it would put the legitimacy of decades into question. This is not Srbenicia or Rwanda, This is the defining characteristic of NATO. Defending NATO countries. Russia even invaded Ukraine knowing it is not a NATO country and taking advantage of the political instability.

    • @1GTX1
      @1GTX1 Před 7 lety

      It's not about would NATO try to defend Estonia if Russia attacked, it's about how they wouldn't be able to defend them as every NATO general knows, and some admit it. Than it would be up to public opinion in UK, Germany, US, are majority of citizens in favour of liberating russian speaking Estonia and total war against Russia where teens of milions of soldiers would die, or would they be in favour of peace agreement. Infact Estonians themselves would be in favour of peace agreement instead of their country being destroyed by total war betwen West and Russia, they wouldn't care that much about russians in Estonia. Make a guess what choice would people make...
      I understand and support pretending about how they would defend Estonia properly and puting some NATO soldiers in Estonia, but there is a reason why the number of NATO soldiers in Estonia is kept low.

    These large military exercises were actually held before Estonia joined NATO, so the reasons were not made up by NATO, but by necessity to defend itself. Unfortunatelly Russia has shown it's true face so many times after Estonia joined NATO, so naturally it has become a large NATO exercise, if not one of the largest. In 2004, two Russian fighters flew just past Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, just prior of joining NATO. Estonia now has Baltic Air-policy fighters stationed in their military airbase, but Russia is still entering NATO airspace from time to time.

      Geography. They want a warm water harbor in the Baltic Sea that won't freeze up in the winter time like St. Petersburg. They do have the warm water port of their Kaliningrad exclave but they have to cross Belarus which isn't a problem for them since Lukashenko is Putin's puppet, but then they must thread a needle down a single narrow route they are allowed to travel between Poland and Lithuania to get there. And now that the EU is restricting certain items on a sanctions list, Lithuania has been stopping Russian trains from going there.. It's driving Putin crazy! 😂

    16:55 Stupid statement. Officially all Soviet republics were independent member states of the union, with their own flags, government, languages etc.
    It's almost like if after Brexit Germans in Britain would start crying that suddenly they live in a foreign country. Yes the Soviet Union was more centralized, but it never was just a single country.

    • @eliteforce2645
      @eliteforce2645 Před 4 lety +1

      It was a single country. We had our own anthems and flags. But it all was centrally run from moscow. If the goverment wanted to do something they would have to ask russia first. Officially independent countries? Im suprised that a finn is saying this kind of stuff.

    Nice documentary! I have to take some issue with the comment "If you don't want war, you must prepare for war". This is of course somewhat true: having a stronger defense can be a deterrent, not to mention every country has a right to defend itself from other countries. But preparing for war as though it were inevitable can also provoke, scare, and/or be used as an excuse that may lead to an intervention from the other side. Estonia would do well both for reasons both related to human rights and concerns about Russian expansionism to avoid the appearance of discrimination against the large ethnic/linguistic Russian minority. If you believe that Estonia has the potential to become the next Ukraine, then it would be wise to avoid some of the mistakes made by Ukraine that precipitated Russia's intervention.

    • @hullmees666
      @hullmees666 Před 7 lety

      there is no discrimination against the large ethnic/linguistic Russian minority, there is against soviets.
      and russia recognizes only strength, which western europe didnt get for a long time, so muscle flexing is a necessity.

    Its somewhat disturbing to use here the word Games - for us it is life and death question as independent and free small nation of 1million with their own democratic state, culture (universities, literature, music, technologies) and language. Neo-Imperialistic Russia misunderstands the real meaning of word Friendly - for Kreml you are friendly neighbor only when you must ask permit from Kremlin for everything. And regrettably many descendants of russian colonists carry on similar shovinistic-imperialistic attitude. For more intelligent part of local russians it isnt a big problem that there is a small west-oriented independent state. But for others...

    I'm sorry for this young, beautiful lady. She better be clever, and not pop out to risk her life for western politicians. All Baltic Srates can be overrun in hours. Let's hope that never happens. Also NATO will not react because i don't think american boys want to die for European politiciand hypocrisy. Why isn't Estonia interested about occupied part of Cyprus (which is in EU) but is occupied by a member of NATO, Turkey ? Ooh yes i know, NATO is perfect.. yes....
