What I kind of wished they didn’t change was the fact that in the books the victors weren’t trying to intimidate Katniss like they were in the movies during the training parts, they were all helping each other even the ones who weren’t part of the rebel plan. They were all being nice and joking around and felt way more together, so when katniss says to Peeta ‘how are we going to kill these people’ it makes more sense because they were all united. Plus it makes it seem like Haymitch doesn’t care for them that much, but all the victors are friends and he’s devastated that he’d be helping katniss and Peeta to kill any of his friends. Like the way he describes Finnick as a peacock and stuff didn’t happen either, because they’re also friends and that’s why Haymitch made it clear he wanted Katniss to choose him as an ally for their plan. But I guess they were trying to paint Finnick off as even more of a douche since in the books it’s just Katniss judging and she realises how wrong she was later.
Also the painting of Rue wasn’t the gamemakers trying to get to Katniss, it was Peeta who did it to rebel and show them how disgusting they were. Katniss saw it and knew Peeta did it and got inspiration to do her own form of rebelling by hanging up that dummy. In the books she didn’t see the rue painting at all though, because they covered it up before she entered but all the victors were thinking of how to annoy the game makers during their individual assessments and were talking about just going in and taking and nap because they were all done with the games.

@@justlive2809 yes! The books are definitely worth reading, there’s more details and being in Katniss’ head is great because she can be so unintentionally funny. Also the movies cut out 80% of Peeta’s personality especially in the first one so that’s an extra thing as well

I wish they included the short convo with Peeta where he points out to Katniss that Finnick and Johanna are messing with her. Not in a mean way, but because they think she is uptight. The sugar cube scene in particular works better if you know he's joking.

@@justlive2809It's been years since I read the books but if I remember correctly the book talks about the Avox. In the first movie when Katniss and Gale are hunting in the forest and that ship appears, in fact it was because they were looking for that girl, she and her boyfriend had tried to escape from 12. And Katniss and Gale see how they kill the boy and then the ship takes the girl. Later when Katniss wins the games and goes to the Capitol she finds that same girl working there as Avox.

What breaks my heart is hearing Haymitch "You never get off this train". Because the kids were always told "If you are reaped and you become a victor, you get to live the rest of your life rich and in peace" but in truth, they become slaves to the Capital, and if you don't do what they want, they kill the people you love (as they did with Haymitch and Joanna). So basically, the victors are not the people who survive the games, but those who die in the games. Because at least they are now free.

There are things a lot of people don’t know that could have been explained in the films like the symbol or meaning of the actual mockingjay the bird. It was engineered to be like a messenger bird, but it began to rebel and had its own thoughts so it was destroyed. Katniss rebelled against the capitol so she became the symbol of the mockingjay.
Or that johannas outburst about there being no one left that she loves is because snow killed all of her family when she refused to be an obedient victor, as snow forced the attractive victors to sell their bodies to capitol residents who desired them, and when Johanna refused to do so snow began killing her family members until none were left.

What is interesting, it's Haymitch's games were special games like these (it was the second Quartell) and this time, there was four tributes by district (2 boys and 2 girl). One of the girls was the aunt of the girl who give the Mockingjay pin to Katniss in the book (it was her pin).
Haymitch won by using the forcefield as a weapon.
Johanna won her Games pretending to be a weakling and it was only when there were only a handful of tributes left that she showed she was capable of killing.

Love CF & think it's the most accurate of all the movies but there are still things that were cut/changed from the book that I thought were a shame to miss -
. When Peeta gave Katniss the pearl on the beach he makes a joke about it being made from coal in reference to an earlier scene in the book where Effie (trying her best to be supportive) says she's been telling everyone that Peeta & Katniss 'might have seemed "a bit rough around the edges" but just like coal they'd been through something tough & came out shining' which made Peeta & Katniss secretly laugh at the fact that Effie clearly dosn't understand how coal works
. After finding out that at least 2 of them will have to go back into the games Peeta throws away all of Haymitch's booze & forces him & Katniss to train with him to make sure they're all in the best shape they possibly can be & Katniss gets annoyed because Peeta isn't being romantic with her anymore
. After trying to intervene during Gale's whipping, a young Peace Keeper gets knocked out, taken to the Capitol & turned into an Avox (a Capitol slave that's had their tongue removed) so that he can serve Katniss & Peeta before they go into the arena again (Snow dose this because the guy was friendly with Katniss, often buying the meat she hunted even when it wasn't very good quality, despite it obviously being illegal to do so)
. Katniss was orginally going to a write letter to all her loved ones on the train to give herself some kind of closure over the lack of goodbyes in District 12 but after remembering her intention to keep Peeta alive means she'll never see them again she decides she can't do it because it will just make it harder for her to let go of them
. As her "talent", that all the Victor's are pushed to have after thier Games so that the Capitol can always be sure to have content for future interviews, Cinna decides to get her to pretend to be a designer (he makes the designs, he just tells her what to say about them) & she finds herself a little jealous of Peeta for having two talents (baking & panting), that he's genuinely good at (the chefs in the Capitol adore him) while she obviously can't share the things she's actually skilled at because (now that she's not in the arena) archery is deemed too "violent" of a hobby for her & hunting is illegal in District 12
. Peeta shows Katniss some of he's art while they're on the train & she's shocked at how upsetting it is as it is all stuff he saw in the arena
. Peeta has some difficulties walking for the enterity of this game because not only did he get electrocuted by the force field but he's still getting used to his prostecic leg that was amputated at the end of the first book, so he's in pretty bad shape for a while & needs more sleep then the rest of the group
. The constantly open door on the train were Katniss gets her information about what's happening in the other Districts is actually footage she sees in the District 12 Mayor's office while visiting he's home for dinner (she is friends with his daughter Madge) but the Mayor's busy & he's wife's unwell so Katniss is briefly free to wonder the house by herself
. Except Katniss (because her dad taught her when she was little from a lake in the woods), Finnick & Mags (because they're from the fishing district), none of the other victors can swim & they only got by because in the book they're outfits had a belt that was a built in flotation device
. In the book Gale gets wipped for being caught with meat from illegal hunting (though he was smart enough to lie about how he got it otherwise Katniss knows he would have been shot instead of whipped) not for attacking a Peace Keeper & thankfully Madge drops off some medicine for him courtsey of her mum
. Mrs Everdeen doesn't become too shaky to inject Gale (in fact Katniss says serval times throughout the series that the only time her mum seems confident is when she's dealing with injured people)
. In the book Gale dose agree to run away with Katniss until he finds out she wants to bring Peeta & Haymitch as well, then they have a big argument which ends with him throwing the gloves she'd given him on the floor saying he dosn't want anything made by the Capitol (they came from Cinna) & she crys thinking he now views her as something "made by the Capitol"
. In the book there's a whole thing were Katniss gets trapped in the woods when the electric fence surrounding District 12 suddenly gets turned on so she has to climb a tree to get back inside the District but jumping from so high up makes her twist her ankle & hurt her ribs making her conversation with the new peace keepers even worse because, hunting being illegal, she had to pretend not to be injured & come up with an excuse as to why she was back so late despite there now being a curfew luckily Prim, Haymitch & Peeta are all able to play along well with her alibi that the new Peace Keepers eventually give up & leave & once Mrs Everdean banages her injuries Katniss spends weeks being carried around her house by Peeta until she can properly walk again
. Katniss meets 2 runaways from District 8 in the woods who are trying to get to District 13, explaining to her about the rebellion in District 8 & the theory that some have about District 13 having survived being bombed by the Capitol
. The elevator scene happens but in the book its actually about the other tributes teasing Katniss for how "pure" she is (hence the random kiss from that other tribute) especially compared to what they're used to in the Capitol (this is because in the the first book while Katniss had to strip Peeta to bath him when he was injured she bassically refused to look at "most of him", after they won Cinna went on the defensive to try to help soften her image to Snow by dressing her very innoscent - hence Finnick's line about the little girl dresses - & to help get them out of the expectation the Capitol probably had for them to move in together straight away Mrs Everdeen told the camera people when they'd arrived to film Katniss & Peeta coming back to District 12 that she was too young to date yet) not Johanna randomly deciding to hit on Peeta
. Katniss & Peeta start putting together a book of useful plants for eating/medicine & she spends half that scene thinking about how golden & long his eyelashes are lol
. The Capitol are able to spin the close relationship Katniss has with Gale by everyone in town pretending that they're cousin's (because obviously just a boy/girl friendship where they're not related would hinder the Katniss/Peeta relationship)
. While on the train Katniss & Peeta watch + make notes of footage from the previous games so that they can better know what they're up against
. Johanne won her games by pretending to be super meek & hiding until most of the tributes were already dead before she came out swinging her axe
. Finnick, though obviously talented, got a lot of help via very expensive gifts from sponsors because of how handsome he was
. Haymitch's games was a Quater Quell & that years twist was that it had twice as many tributes as usual, Katniss was shocked to see that her mum was friends with one of the female tributes & that, that tribute, Mayslee Donner, was the twin sister of the current District 12 Mayor's wife
. Haymitch teamed up with Mayslee for a while but they decided to spilt up when the amount of tributes became too small, because they didn't want to get stuck having to kill eachother but he runs back to her as soon as he heard her start screaming though, but it was too late, she'd been attacked by a swarm of genetically altered birds with super sharp beaks, he held her hand until she died
. Mayslee's District token was a gold mockingjay pin (Madge gave it to Katniss in the first book after she volunteered for Prim, but didn't tell her who it previously belonged to)
. Haymitch won his games by accidently using a force field in the arena against the last tribute (he was running away from them, they tried to throw thier weapon at him but due to his guts bassically falling out from their previous fight, he collapsed before it could hit him & it instead struck the force field in front of him which made it spring backwards & slam into the head of the other tribute, killing her instantly) but because the game makers didn't like one of thier tools of control being used to benifit a victor (especially one from a non career District who'd been very disrespectful during his interview) so to punish him they murderd he's family & girlfriend
. This was actually stated in the 1st book but I forgot to mention it for your first movie reaction but the reason the Capitol takes the tributes dead bodies away is because a few years back there was a tribute that went nuts & started eating the people he killed, which grossed out the Capital citizens, until he died in an avalanche (which Katniss believes was set up by the Capitol to stop him from being the winner)

Cool videos. But just one thing: The romans didn't vomit their food out so they could eat more. That's a myth. A "vomitorium" was just the entry and the passages in an amphitheatre or a stadium that lead to the seats, so it "spew forth" big masses of people. It was a wordplay in the work "Saturnalia" written by Macrobious in the 5th century, basically half a century before the last western Roman Emperor died. So it wasn't really a word used by many Romans. It was just a common wordplay option to add "-orium" at words to make up new, often satirical terms for places. The modern, wrong interpretation of the word was coined by Aldous Huxley (yes, the author of Brave New World) in the 1923 comic novel "Antic Hay". Part of the work was the depiction of the decadence of cultural elites. I guess we just really like all the myths about the alleged gluttony and waste of the elites of the past and because of that we tend to buy such stories without much questions. Same thing with the false attribution of the "Let them eat cake" quote for Marie Antonette which was even used during the revolution as part of anti-monarchist populism.
And just to be clear: yes, the Romans loved a good feast. Just like we do today. I would even say the average Roman feast was not that much more gluttonous than some feasts average people have today. There was enough flesh, white bread, wine and music. But you need only so much to be completely full. A lot of modern weddings and even some birthday parties and other festive activities are probably not that much behind it. ;) Or sometimes just a LAN party with enough fast food. Only the rooms today are probably not decorated as expensive with gold and marmor and stuff.
And yes, I call it "anti-monarchist populism", but I'm of course in favor of democracy, so I don't have a problem with the "anti-monarchist" part. But factual incorrect popularism is still factual incorrect popularism, even if it mobilizes people for a just cause.

But overall the adaption is great & the message that the elite top percentage of our world are living of the hard work & death of the working majority is still there. I said when the first movie game out that our Hunger Games is mid to high schooling where kids compete to get the top grades for the good jobs & live in luxury while the rest suffer.

There’s so much more info and knowledge to gain by reading them! I could comment forever on what the book did, but people already have 😂. So really, all I can say is, read the books! I’ve never read the books although reading all the comments I just might considering the movie leaves out quit a lot of important details. But I’ve been watching every hunger games reaction on CZcams and learning more and more about this series and I’ve really been able to resonate with it being a black Haitian girl and when I think about my ancestors. Everything that has happened in this movie has happened starting with slavery to black folks and how broken this system is. We’re living this movie in real life and that’s what people aren’t understanding.

If you haven't yet taken the time to read the books, you should do so. Audible has an outstanding audio version. The books provide a lot more detail and insight into the motivation of the characters.

President Snow does not have a “fragile ego”. He’s smart man that was 100% correct in what he knew people would look at the situation like and tried the very few things he could to prevent it leading to the uprising. Like he later says, he is not wasteful.
