      I was totally underwhelmed with the rear light until I turned off that ambient light sensor. I was about to return it. Turned it off using the method you give here and it started acting like a decent light. Battery time is surprisingly good, given the tiny size.

    I have the older flare r city lights and when I point them directly into my room lamp they switch to daytime, and when I point to the ground it goes to nighttime. So the issue you described might not be an issue but a great feature. The headlights of a car will trigger daytime running lights if bright enough to wash out your taillight. On top of that, you really don’t want daytime lights on at night. When its dark enough it can be hard for a car to see what direction/speed someone is traveling at due to there being gaps in the flash, this is why the nighttime mode stays on at a low intensity with sharper blinks of intensity to catch a driver’s attention without being annoying or difficult to judge what you are.

    • @abbreviateTome
      @abbreviateTome  Před 5 lety +1

      I see, but what I was talking about was riding during the day. I mainly bought these as a day time running light. At night I'm well aware NOT to have the daytime flashing modes ON for obvious reasons such as you have mentioned. On top of that, it's also illegal. and if I went abroad say to, Germany, I'm well aware not to have any Flashing mode ON at any time as they are illegal. I've done my research, but thank you for the contribution towards safety :)

      Jeroen Suys Good question, I never thought of that. I have just tested it out with my Anker power bank, and I can confirm that it was charging whilst the light was on. Although I have no idea if the charge input would be greater than the discharge rate.
      Theoretically, it should give it a longer run time, but Keep in mind, the micro usb flap is on the bottom, so it’s exposed to the elements of whatever your tyre might flick towards it.

    Thanks for this review. I am torn between the Ion RT 1300 and the Giant Recon HL 1600 front light. Hard to find any reviews. Maybe its because its only been recently released? For charging, can you use a 2 Amp charger?

    • @abbreviateTome
      @abbreviateTome  Před 5 lety

      Richard M you’re welcome. I’ve got some other lights. Much more powerful than these called designshine DS. But they are wired to a large battery. They last for a long time & are much brighter . I haven’t had any experience with the Giant Recon HL 1600. As for charging these, I use the standard usb to mico usb power. Or sometimes use my Anker power bank to charge it faster. The Anker has a sensor chip that reads connected devices which, in turn, regulates the maximum right amount of power. I wouldn’t be so sure as to charge it with say, an iphone 2 Amp charger, because it would be an unregulated amount of output power to the light.

      @abbreviateTome  Před 4 lety

      Hi. Thanks.
      I wouldn’t recommend that with any appliance 😅. You Might short circuit it and ruin it for good.
      Most power banks use smart charging where it knows how much power to put out at the maximum point. I use an Anker power bank charger. Safest and fastest way to charge lights, phones...etc.

      @@abbreviateTome Hi Yusuf, I just received my light set and in the user guide they show that it is safe to use an AC adapter. A 1.0 and 2.0 usb port puts out 5v 500mA DC and my phone adapter puts out 5v 1000mA DC so this should charge the lights twice as fast. I contacted Trek to find out if this would be a safe practice and he told me that it should work fine. I just thought I would share since you provided such good information. Thanks

      @@abbreviateTome I'm currently using the head light with the Garmin and di2. Would highly advise against the tail light. It blinks intermittently when idling and off. You can only shut it off if you manually disable the Bluetooth. This means you have to hold down the button for 8 seconds to re-enable it every time you're ready to use it. Terrible design. Annoying and definitely not worth the trouble.

      Beltran Ceregido Hi there. No, it only happened that very first time when I took it out of the box, started to charge it, and 10 min in took it off charge. I presumed it was due to it still not being broken in. The same how smart phone manufacturers say to charge the phone up to 100% before use. It now works like a charm 👌.

    • @abbreviateTome
      @abbreviateTome  Před 5 lety

      Very true. The ambient sensor is a "feature" for riding out on rural area's and automatically dims the blinding lights when the sun has set, HOWEVER, if its still midday and you ride into a well-lit tunnel, the sensors will dim the light and it won't be visible to the cars approaching the tunnel. Luckily there is an option to turn this "feature" off. Hold down the light button for 8 seconds, after the flash, the ambient sensor will now be disabled.

    Ouch I was just about to order this until you said the recharge time. I might still get it since I have a tendency to take the light off the bike as soon as I get home and plug it in to charge it but I am astonished that they don’t have something that seems like it’s in the modern era of charging with all of the other good engineering in the design

    • @abbreviateTome
      @abbreviateTome  Před rokem

      To be fair. They are not that much of a problem. The front light lasts much more than the rear, but the rear light is faster to charge. I’m in the habit of just charging it when I get home if it needs be. I don’t commute by bike so I do need to charge it as often. The capabilities of being able to charge any battery on earth is to have Colbolt in them. After hearing a Podcast on Spotify ( Joe Rogan #1914) and the disgusting sub human levels of slavery that go’s into this, I was shocked. The book 📚 (Cobalt Red: How the Blood of the Congo Powers Our Lives) is coming out soon too. After knowing this , me personally I now prefer these batteries over the iphone 14 pro which I’m currently typing on. I know I’ve swerved off topic a little, but we buy this gear for our safety on the roads. I’d like to know that it’s not at the cost of other children’s safety when mining for the colbolt batteries. With these light, I can rest a little better knowing they haven’t had this stuff put in them as of YET. nevertheless, they are excellent light especially when paired with that remote I demonstrate in another video. So handy especially in the winter with gloves and multiple lights. I’d say go for them if wireless lights is your thing. If you want more powerful lights but with a bulky battery pack and wires, theres this company called designShine made by an independent American engineer. Fantastic lights. Still got them. Only problem they were bulky. But these from Bontreger are just what i need.

      I’ve had mine sit for two weeks with the Bluetooth on ( blue flashing light) and its fine. Maybe you’ve got a faulty product. Try restarting it if possible that might help. Extreme cold or hot weather also plays a big factor on batteries. My bike is stored in my house 15-25 degrees centigrade.

    • @abbreviateTome
      @abbreviateTome  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Hi, yes you can. If the sensor is off, you can access all modes any time.
      ⚠️But caution :
      1- if you ride with daytime mode , you WILL piss off many drivers and they will become angry 😡
      2- you will literally blind them in that critical moment, this is also dangerous because they won’t be able to judge how far they are from you when passing.
      I highly advise against using Daytime ( 90 lumin) or the Daytime ( 45 lumin ) or even (25lumin )setting at night.
      ONLY use night mode.

    Which will be better Bontrager Flare Rt Or Ravemen Tr300 ?

    • @abbreviateTome
      @abbreviateTome  Před 10 měsíci +1

      I have not tested the Ravemen Lights.
      Before the Bontrager, I had some awesome lights from Designshine with 500 Lumens ( czcams.com/video/NyjPNub3sKE/video.html ) made in house in the USA 🇺🇸.
      Those were the only daytime lights I could find back in 2012. But they were bulky and extremely heavy.
      I later preferred the Bontrager because :
      1- They are much smaller in size and compact.
      2- they’ve conducted scientific research to see how Driver’s react czcams.com/video/djUHht74r-s/video.html
      3- They can be controlled by remote or a Garmin computer
      4- No need for cables/wires.
      5- they have a unique flash pattern which catches the attention of drivers. Also, Instead of high Lumens like the good old days, the bontrager’s have FOCUS beam which directs scattered light towards drivers. ( so think of the concept of lasers. They are low lumen but are very bright).
      By the looks of the ravemen Rt300, they seem to have more lumens but look much bulkier although they seem to fit aero seat post right out of the box . But like I said, I haven’t tested them, and also lumens alone is not enough to be considered a safety feature, light patterns and FOCUSed light are important factors.
      Remember, the brightest light is the sun ☀️. No light can match the sun’s lumens. So that’s why Focus beam technology in bontrager is important for me.

      Hi, with the lights off, Hold down the button for 15 seconds followed by two light flashes will turn on the ANT+ & Bluetooth. ( it instantaneously reconnects to my Bontrager transmitter remote).
      Then when you’re done riding, turn them off by holding down the button for 15 seconds followed by two light flashes and it will turn off.
      But if you’re doing it for the first time, it’s a different procedure.

    These lights are highly functional but they only last for 1 year (I have had 3 of them) before the battery and/or the switches fail, and cannot be replaced which for the price, is ridiculous.

      That is strange, these are IPX7 rated, which means it can withstand being submerged in water up to 1 Meter for 30 minutes. Were you sure that you properly closed the sealants after charging? if so, take it back. They should cover it under their warranty.
