  • The Pathfinder Adventure Card Game has been around since 2013. It's a co-operative card game for 1-6 players.
    Last year a new edition of the game hit the market.
    There are 5 base sets, each with 6 Adventure Decks, and add-on characters. There are nearly 140 Characters you can play! There is Organized Play in the form of the Pathfinder Adventure Card Society. There are 'seasons' to play, ways to make random games and change difficulty, and you can even create your own custom cards to recreate your home campaign right there in the cards! You can play it Online via Play by Post or in Virtual 3D-O-Vision with TableTop Simulator. There's even a digital version on desktop and mobile!
    Confused? Well don't be! I'm here to ramble on about the Card Game with a general overview and mild history of the system, and show you the boxes I own, and some of the differences between the Old and New versions. I also touch on Organized Play and talk about the Character Decks in use there.

    Sad News! Couple days ago (March 09, 21) Paizo casually, almost off-handedly, announced that Organized Play and support for the Card Game is Over. Season 7 will not be finished. There will be one last Special to close it all out at PaizoConOnline 2021, and then...that's it. No more Adventure Card Game. I'm very sad about it. So, buy up the older sets if you are wanting them before they go out of print, same with Class Decks. (Which reminds me, I should snag a few of the decks I've been meaning to pick up myself)

      @Kamicosmos' Guitars and Games - Didn't want to 'like' that comment but I appreciate you passing that info along...seems odd to me that this news comes now when so many card games have been coming out in recent years. Maybe the pandemic isolation made a digital version more appealing?? I see they have a new digital one-shot available, so maybe they want to strengthen that path. Reading through the forum, lots of sad comments there, but some comments full of hope as well for continued support with the existing IP material..also, seems some folks have been creating and playing a digital edition of it for a while now...might be worth a look: warhorn.net/events/acs-mindscape-lodge-weekly-adventure-run

    Thanks so much for this awesome video. With the game now being discontinued, it's so hard to find any info on this epic game. Just bought a bunch of sets and had to find some on ebay. My family is absolutely loving it, playing with the kids, it's the perfect game for us.

    I’ve played all of the editions. The core/throne revisions really made it awkward to run. The use of a booklet you have to flip around, and proxy cards you constantly have to reference, just made it not fun to run compared to quickly referencing the scenario card on the table and the cards saying what they are. Granted there are great improvements in 2nd edition, but the 1st edition was already so good that my play group has no interest in playing 2nd edition due to the extra admin.

    • @kamicosmos
      @kamicosmos  Před 3 lety

      Good point, Ryan! Since I mostly play Society scenarios, having a 'storybook' and having to make/reference proxy cards in that, the 'conversion' to using them in the New Version was easy for me. I actually really like the literal Proxy cards they included, so that way you can keep the Villan out for all to see, or then just grab the story book to see the stats when you flip that proxy card. But, yes it does kind of take you out of the game for a moment. And it also does add a bit of 'clutter' on your table keeping the cards and storybook off to one side.

    First four sets are so much better than the "rebranded" one. They made the art more ugly, and half of the card doesn't even have a picture. Instead of allies standing visible in almost full size new art just shows their faces extremely upclose.

    Thanks for this video, it is very helpful!
    I have tried the digital version and I like the game a lot! Lots of a variety!
    I'm thinking of getting the 2nd Core + CotCT because of the revised rules and I don't mind the visual changes.
    The 1st version is also available in my place also.
    Which one do you suggest?

    • @kamicosmos
      @kamicosmos  Před 2 lety +1

      Well, since the product is dead with nothing new coming, I would suggest getting which ever one you can find with all of it's 'stuff', be that an older addition with all the adventure decks and character add-on deck, or the New Core with the Crimson Throne adventure path. (that one should be the easiest and cheapest to acquire, currently.) Otherwise, if you have a source, or don't mind hunting the internet, go for the one with the theme you like best. For example, myself, I found Mummy's Mask with all it's stuff, so I snagged that up, cause I love Ancient Egypt stuff. The New Core and the Old Boxes are compatible, and I ran some Season of the Runelords games at a local con recently, using the New Core Rules, and it worked out well. Good luck on your hunt, and have fun playing whichever set you wind up with!

    Hi. Thank you for the review!
    I have the Rise of the Runelords box and I want to continue playing after finishing the 6 adventures, but I'm unsure of a couple of things:
    - If I want to play in the Society system, I will need to purchase a character deck and since I only own Rise of Runelords, I will only be able to play season 2, right?
    - And going forward, if I decide to buy a new box, do I need to buy the new core set to play the Curse of the Crimson Throne Adventure Path, or is it possible to play this adventure path with the Rise of Runelords box?
    I'm sorry to be asking you this, but I find that the information on Paizo's website is not very clear.

    • @kamicosmos
      @kamicosmos  Před 4 lety +1

      Society Play: If you just want to play the Season of the Runelords at home, no you don't need a character deck for that. Unless there is a particular character you want to play that is not included in the Runelords box, of course. If you want to track the character's progress and take it to conventions & game stores to play in other scenarios, then yeah you will need a character deck. Runelords box only supports season 2 of Organized Play, and it also supports Season of the Goblins.
      Technically the new and old games are backwards compatible, so in theory you can buy Crimson Throne and mix it in with any of the sets and it will work. Besides the visual differences in the cards, there are wording and rule changes that you would need to work out. The Core rules (along with all previous rules) are available on Paizos site, so you wouldn't need to buy the Core set just to get them. That said, I'd recommend getting Core and Curse if you plan on playing them, it would just be much easier and a much better playing experience.

    • @kamicosmos
      @kamicosmos  Před 4 lety +1

      And to further clarify (or muddy the waters) you can use a Character Deck in non-organized play. Say you want to add the Oracle to Runelords. Buy Character Deck, add the cards to the box. Or, you can keep the Deck seperate and play it like OP, where you keep it's cards all self-contained and don't mix them into the box. (Character Deck cards have icons on them to let you know what deck the belong to, so it's easy to seperate them later.)

    Hi, I'm just wondering if I missed it. What are the differences?? I think you mentioned like 2 things and then started going on about the game and the society play and never finished covering the differences. Thank you!

    • @kamicosmos
      @kamicosmos  Před 3 lety +1

      I'll have to go back and watch it to see what specifically I mentioned. But, while not as dramatic as say Pathfinder 1 to Pathfinder 2 changes, there are just a lot of little rules changes, key word changes, and procedure changes in the new card game. Biggest one is you can only use one type of Boon per encounter. No more stacking 6 blessings on a fight, for example. There's also some changes in how the clean up stage works now, for when you attempt a recharge on a used spell, as one example. Another one that is pretty big is now when a location closes, it Goes Away, off the board. So no more being able to hang out in the library location and farm boons, or get healed at the apothecary. Stuff like that.

    • @kamicosmos
      @kamicosmos  Před 3 lety +1

      You mean the playmat? It's probably long sold out. I was hoping they'd do a new one for the new card game. To be honest, setting up in a circle like that doesn't work all that great. We usually just put the locations in a line across the table, and put the Hour Deck near the Box runner who takes care of flipping it each turn.

      Why do you think I'd be against print and play? I personally haven't messed with any fan created content. Although, I will definitely check out the Necromancer! I played Nytessa through two campaigns so far, will be interesting to see a different take on it. The campaigns would be interesting to take a look at as well. I think both versions of the game had rules on how to build your own scenarios, and the New Core has some ways to randomize them, along with the 'difficulty' changes you can make.
