    Honestly, I'm stoked these are back. I stopped playing around about Khans of Tarkir block and only came back to the game a couple of months ago, really, really surprised to discover that GPs and PTQ's etc were things of the past. I have really fond memories of travelling to different GP's and getting a taste of top tier competitive tournaments and will absolutely be heading the ones that are in Europe next year.

    0:16 That intro hurt my physically. Not just because of the nostalgia, but because watching GP's was something of an event for me personally. It was so cool watching the stream back in the day and having the color commentators explain each play in detail and speculate on what each player would do. WotC could have made a killing by monetizing the stream.

      I know i'm going to make a bad question, but I just wanted to know your perspective on this. It's clear wotc Is pulling back from latam, probably because they aren't making enough Money to support a specific involvment in the region: so why do you think wotc (a company that aims at making Money) should make events inan area that realistically doesn't have enough players to justify that?

    • @GarciLP
      @GarciLP Před 22 dny +31

      @@Automaconfuso not a bad question at all. The problem is, I'm a magic player, not a WotC stakeholder, so my focus is on competitive opportunities and healthy formats, not their bottom line. South America has historically produced a number of top tier players, including world champions such as PVDDR - shutting off a region which has proven to be strong from a competitive standpoint in the name of corporate greed is and will always be bullshit in my books.

    Canadian here! I'm also a gigging musician so I know a bit about how event planning works up north. The sad reality is that we simply just don't have a big enough population to even justify holding an event here, even in Toronto. It'd actually be easier for western canada to travel down to Seattle for an event than i'd be for them to travel here in southern ontario. In-fact, people do it for blue jays games; it's a well known fact that whenever the jays play the mariners in seattle it's essentially a home game for the jays lol (there was actually huge controversy last year about the mariners shop selling blue jays merch). The owner of one of the LGS I go to is also a manager for a punk band and we were talking about how financially, its better for his CANADIAN punk band to tour the U.S. because there's more stops and more population. The further west you go in Canada the more sparse it becomes until you reach the like three big cities.
    It sucks that there isn't one in Toronto at least, but it does make sense to me logistically if they would be billing it as "Canada's Event". Our CommandFest coming up is even in a tiny venue compared to some of the ones in the U.S. We simply just don't have enough people to do one.

    I think that if these events are very open, ones that I don't have to pay just to walk through the door, these could be awesome. Yes, I'd obviously need to pay to get into the events. I have zero qualms with that. But if I want to go to, say, meet some of the artists there or look at what the vendors have, this would be great. Back in the GP days, when there was one in my area I went to do just that. And also I played in a couple side events. I even met *you* there, Prof! I still have the picture! I wouldn't even mind if you had to pay (a small fee, not a big one) to rent a table with a group to do your own thing
    If they do have to charge to walk in, it should be a nominal fee. Enough so that I won't feel like I wasted time if I go and don't find anything interesting.
    And of course travel. I want there to be one in my area. Thankfully I live in a big enough area that it may be considered. But the travel thing is another big question and I do hope a lot of places get these events since travel can absolutely be the biggest barrier to some people's attendance.

    6:00 - The sad reality is that for a lot of Canadians, it's much easier to catch an event in many locations in the US than it is to head down to somewhere like Toronto or Montreal (And sometimes even cheaper to fly). To put it in perspective, driving from Winnipeg (Around the centre of Canada) to Toronto is about the same time as driving from Winnipeg to Dallas (~20-22H).

    The big prize is great, BUT:
    1.) it leads to collusion and sketchy deals under the table between players.
    2.) most ppl are not economically able to attend these events that require travel, hotels, and admission costs, on top of the cost of your deck.
    3.) edh is the biggest mtg format; most players aren’t sweaty and competitive mtg players. Most play casual kitchen table 1v1 or casual 4 player edh overall….i bet its less than 20% of mtg players that actually go to tournaments, even for the lgs events.

    • @behemoth9543
      @behemoth9543 Před 20 dny

      Point 1. is absolutely valid but I assume they mean "50.000$ prize pool split between the top finishes, for example 1. 20.000, 2. 10.000, 3. and 4. 5.000, 5-8 1.000, 9-16 Rest. Just makes the most sense.
      2. Correct, but having that outlet for the highest level of competitive Magic be open to all rather than locked between already being in the ingroup is very important for the game. I hope they will expand it to other countries aswell, its the most logical next step if this goes well for them. They were likely wary of investing too much into too many different areas right away. That would certainly cut down on travel expenses for a lot of people, especcially outside the US.
      3. EDH got as big as it is right now is because it was cheap cards people had leftover that they weren´t able to play in 1v1 formats, its the very core of the format. Talking about 1v1 formats and their players in such a derogatory way is just stupid, you WANT tournaments to do well even if you don´t play any 1v1 formats because if there is more focus on 1v1 formats again you will benefit by proxy because this isn´t a zero sum game. Its like you´re playing tennis with friends in your free time and insulting players at Wimbledon for being sweaty and competitive.

    • @Theanthill216
      @Theanthill216 Před 20 dny

      @@behemoth9543 my issue is having that mindset while playing edh. Its fine to go play the 1v1 formats and be competitive, just dont be that way at the casual edh pod. As a native English speaker from the US, I never realized that people were pronouncing ‘Grand Prix’ like ‘Crussant’, and now I won’t be able to unhear it. Thanks, Prof!

    Spotlights are thematically small and used to target a small number, often one person. It's a weird name choice.

    I think the name is only an issue right now. If they keep it for a few years it will earn the same pedigree the GP name has. Though with a way less cool acronym. That said, I would prefer they just call them GPs either way.

    Prof, why does all your videos cite "Vintage Education" by Kevin MacLeod as the music, when Vintage Education is just the name of your logo music and doesn't even happen in videos like this one?

    This feels like a response to Pokemon's modern Regional Championships especially with the cash(?) prizing.
    The sad part is Pokemon probably copied MTG years ago when it was starting out.

    “Spotlight Series” doesn’t sound like an open event. It sounds like an invitational event “spotlighting” specific players. But whatever.
