  • For half a century, the federal government has treated marijuana as one of the more dangerous drugs in the United States. On Tuesday, the Biden administration signaled a significant shift in approach.
Zolan Kanno-Youngs, a White House correspondent for The Times, explains how big an impact the proposed changes could have.
Guest: Zolan Kanno-Youngs (www.nytimes.com/by/zolan-kann...) , a White House correspondent for The New York Times.
    Background reading:
    • The Biden administration’s effort to liberalize marijuana policy (www.nytimes.com/2024/04/30/us...) comes as increasingly more Americans favor legalizing the drug.
    • After the recommendation to ease restrictions, Democrats in the Senate reintroduced legislation to legalize marijuana (www.nytimes.com/2024/05/01/us...) .

Cannabis should be absolutely just as legal and easy to obtain anywhere as alcohol currently is. In every single state. No exceptions. It's so easy: As legal and easy to obtain/use as alcohol currently is. Why hold relatively benign, often healing cannabis to any sort of irrational, stricter double standard than perfectly legal alcohol?.....

This is a step, but no where near what the general population wants. This does not stop incarceration, illegal searches, or banking practices for dispensaries. This does help the pharmaceutical and insurance industries to start prescribing and price setting.

Well, it actually does change the banking relationships, but I agree with everything else you said

I do not disqualified the use of weeds but it should be a controlled product just like medicine, alcohol and fire arms. This needs should not be easily available to minors and also the users should respect other non users when smoking in the public spaces.

"Activists, I need you to give me a democratic conference if you want legal weed.
And I hear you. I hear you saying, Grandpa, I'm tired.
Well. I'll tell ya. That's too damn bad.
Get out there and mobilize if you want to get high in peace."

Was disappointed Barrack didnt get this done (thanks republicans for defending individual rights, per the usual) but its a profoundly overdue step that we can agree will benefit the many, and yes - enrich the few. 🇺🇸

Republicans defending individual rights? Their greatest accomplishment is repealing a woman’s right control her own body. I’m so ready for November. Can’t fucking wait.
