    That 2038r and the Rhino mower did an amazing job on that super-thick grass and the saplings too. This video shows what can be done with an outfit like that.

      Tractors this size have a 9 or 10" clutch disc for the pto. It's extremely easy for this much rotating mass to overpower that clutch. And if it doesn't slip it will stall the tractor very hard, which can definitely break crankshafts or pto/transmission shafts. I've replaced the dual disc clutch in my mahindra 2816 and it was quite a job. My 5' bush hog can kill the tractor when I hit rough stuff also, no way would I want more.

      My 28hp mahindra is just perfect for my 5' bush-hog. No way would I want more. That 10' cutter is a lot of rotating mass that can do a lot of damage to the PTO clutch or even the engine crankshaft if the clutch doesn't give when you hit something hard. Nobody to blame but yourself when you overload your machine that much.

      You are confusing a 10 foot with 15 foot mower. I have owned two 15 footers. Never seen a 10 footer with two wings until this video - but I have seen a 15 footer minus a wing, making it a 10 footer.

    • @tylerhughes3984
      @tylerhughes3984 Před 2 lety

      Lets see it on a steep hill or a steep bank. Where that tractor has to hold the weight of the brushhog back! It would throw that thing down the stuff I mow! Also that is very light brush. I mean what mostly ankle to shin height. So not much PTO HP is needed to gut it. We have a 8' a 12' and a 15' brushhogs. We work the heck out of them.

  • @stevewarner8880
    @stevewarner8880 Před 4 lety

    I pulled a 15' batwing type mower for years for a state highway dept. Not only do they make quick work of large open areas, they allow for great trimming advantages. Hanging over ditch banks, pond banks, backing under trees and overhanging obstructions. We started using +/- 50 HP gas tractors then eventually 90 HP diesels. One bit of advice, when trimming in unknown areas, always back in slowly, easier on the tractor to get yourself out. Obviously that mower has CV joints behind the tractor to allow for your turning radius, that's great but in time they wear out like anything. Good video Tim.

  • @allenelmore4570
    @allenelmore4570 Před 4 lety +1

    I'm a huge fan of a 15' batwing, but I like this 10' option. Like you mentioned about 3 SCV's allowing the independent control of each wing, it's my favorite option, especially going over larger sprouts/trees, if it starts to bog down I can clutch lift the wing and ease it back down and finish them off. When cutting thickets like that I try to stay on the uncut portion not to puncture the tires as the sprouts can bend down, but the left overs tend to be stiff enough to go into the tires. It's hard to find tractors that are set up with 3 SCV's in the used market, and some manufacturers don't allow for that many to be added to their tractors.

    Great video. The Rhino mower really does a great job, especially on such a small tractor! Christy, great camera work!
    For those rough edge trimming, a larger tractor and wider batwing would have been nice as it's difficult to see what your getting into as well as the tractor being a bit farther from the woods. But what you did get looks awesome!

    It is totally amazing what can be done with these compact tractors. I bale hay with my New Holland TC24D using a Deere 24T baler pulling a hay rack. The field is flat so I can even get 130 bales on the rack and still pull it. I would never try it in a field with much slope as I am sure the weight would push the tractor down hill and be dangerous.

    • @TractorTimewithTim
      @TractorTimewithTim  Před 4 lety +2

      Yes. Is there an 'offset drawbar' available for it? ...as long as you maintain the 8" separation to the PTO, a bit more drawbar height would be great. I believe I measured 11-12" vertical separation...so we could raise the drawbar 3 inches without issue. That would help a lot!

      I run a John Deere 5300 pulling a John Deere MX10 rotary cutter on rolling hilly southwestern Pennsylvania farmland.
      I need to downshift to 1st gear while mowing up a moderately steep hill. I wish I had a bit more horsepower.
      According to my tractor’s manual “Factory Observed PTO Power” is 50 horsepower. I should also say that I have a geared transmission and 4 wheel drive.
      For the situation you describe, a 12 foot mower would probably be a bit much for your tractor. I looked up specs on your tractor and see 50 hp at the PTO.
      And you describe your land as “really hilly”.
      I think even with a 10 foot cutter you will be in the same boat as me, wanting a bigger tractor or a smaller cutter.

    That mower and tractor was a great combination and doing a fine job, but where I live we can't use a mower that large as we have some trees close together and I could not get around them without damaging the trees or the tractor and mower. The state contractors use mowers that size to clean up along the highways and those mowers works just fine fore that.

    I feel like it probably wouldn't mow that when it's fresh and green in the spring, either way I'm very impressed. I have a 3 point hitch mower that may be a bit bigger or the same, thinking 12 feet but it has wings that swing in and out, very good at getting around things and under things. Very heavy, but very good for getting around an orchard, I run it on an 80-95hp tractor though. That is more of a bush hog though and this is more of a giant lawnmower with alot more blades so alot of resistance. Something like that though I could sure keep the farm cleaned up nice, orchard mower is not great in really tall grass, leaves lines. Biggest worry I see is that your small tractor may not tolerate all that shock and impact over time, either way i love that mower.

  • @MattN03
    @MattN03 Před 4 lety +2

    That's really impressive you could pull a 10' mower! I use a 5' rotary cutter on my Kubota B3200 and I don't think it would handle a lot more.

    • @53kills
      @53kills Před 3 lety

      Bush hogs require more size and hp due to weight than a pull type. I think your Kubota is similar hp to what he is using. It could handle it for normal cutting but would be hard pressed in heavier stuff. Also the drawbar height would be a problem.

    Tim, you did a good job on that open space. Wonder what it would look like if you mowed it again in a couple of weeks but mow it cross ways or at an angle from the way you mowed it. Thinking it would cut it up better.

    Hi Tim, maybe I got a solution to avoid the possibility to do some damage to the PTO shaft of the mower when you do tight turns. When I mow with our flail mower and 6115M I do the same like you, I always start with the difficult edges of the field but i also do 3 or 4 extra rounds around the field, this way i have enoungh clearance to turn around easily. I hope i was able to help you. ;)
