Your a bigger person admitting when you make a mistake, that what makes you a good person .
My Grandfather used to say: "The last man that was perfect got crucified. Nobody has come close since."
trailering is a bit of a problem with that. I can't criticize. I broke my foot getting on a 4020 last month. I completed the task at hand and called my friend help me get in the truck. I drove myself to the hospital.
I often tell my sons "Learn from your mistakes, but also learn from other peoples mistakes". Thanks for the lesson!

I have a 1025R after researching them on your channel. I'm also a pilot and in aviation there is a saying that goes, "Learn from the mistakes of others, you won't live long enough to make them all yourself!" Thank you for sharing this.
We have a term for this in our industry and it's called "sign blindness" It's a genuine problem that we are surrounded by so much trivial warnings that we just ignore it and miss the really important ones
Completely agree. There are so many stickers on each piece of equipment, that is the first thing that I do is remove most of the "CYA" stickers. Like don't stick your hand under the mower when its running. It could hurt you! ugh...
@@Chris_In_Texas I learned from the master mechanic that I trained under in the heavy equipment shop that we worked out of to take a "Polaroid" of every sticker (in those days mostly LOF info and other Maintainance recommendations) and file them with any owners manual or at least the invoice because any worthwhile machine will last long enough to outlive the stickers. We included pictures of belt info before the printed markings wore off because A) Belt info often wasn't included in the paperwork and 2) Broken belts can be hard to accrately measure. Though I thought it was a ploy to make sure I read each sticker and recorded each belt, your removing the silly ones at least shows you read and knew which where which. I was always glad I took the time, and nowadays I save the pics to a memory stick so I have them even when my wife throws out the paperwork. Wait a minute... Which tool box did I put that memory stick in?
Tim, new subscriber, you won me over with "Tim's HUGE Error!" As a kid, many farmers used a sling (usually old inner tube or leather strap) to hold PTO shafts unhooked during transport to/from the work site, since we lived in hill country with many drainage ditches. Also, most tractors with slide bar hitches had a "transport" bar to give clearance for these situations.
No worries Tim, the only way to not make a mistake is to do nothing, happens to us all.

Thanks for sharing! This can happen on many styles of implements with the wrong length shafts as you mentioned such as 3 point attachments. I think we all get excited with new equipment and jump into using it before really studying the manuals. Great explanation! Watch them fingers too! Haha

Excellent information! I have a similar set up and was a little concerned with the 4th hole draw bar on my pull type 6ft BMB mower. But watching you tow that beast around put my mind at ease which was a huge help! The mistake and willingness to show it to your community of fans and supporters just means your a good person and care enough for the greater Learning Experience! Two Thumbs Up! Stay safe!
Thanks for sharing Tim it's not easy to admit your mistakes, especially in such a public forum. Something that maybe deserves a follow-up though is just how dangerous the opposite condition is. If there isn't enough overlap and the PTO comes in two, now it acts as a high HP blender stuck to your tractor. Deadly... You got lucky it wasn't the gearbox on the mower end to let go. I for one am greatful you are alive to tell this story, and save another viewers life for having the courage to tell it.

Absolutely love your sense of humor. Sharing your mistake(s) will help anyone from doing the same thing so sharing is what real men do.
This is a very common issue with compact tractors as the rear housing is aluminum and most dealers do not cut the power shaft to compensate for full travel. I have repaired/replaced the PTO drive assembly, differentials, and even full rear housing because of drive shafts being too long. The #1 implement that causes this issue is a post hole attachment.
And at the other end of the 3 point travel post hole diggers (which usually have long drive shafts) can have the two shaft part cease to overlap and that creates a whole different sort of mayhem! See czcams.com/video/ApnU87qOQh8/video.html for a video on the subject.
In my early 20’s I put diesel fuel in a gas engine... took me years to get over it...every time I thought about it I would cringe.. at 42 now.. it is what it is.. ya live and learn.. P.S. I read every manual and sticker for everything now!
Diesel in a gas isn't great but it's not fatal. Gas in a diesel however likely means a new engine. I've seen both in my years of running a shop.
D B few more details... it was my bosses work truck... it ran for about a half mile.. then caught on fire.. not a major fire but definitely fire.. he was good with engines so he got it running again... still remember the look on his face though..
Our Oliver 66 got diesel fuel more than once. She ran a bit rough, but burned her way thru it.
Diesel in a gas is not the end of the world gas in a diesel is not good at all deadly to the engine
The Green handle usually is the Diesel pump,,, but not always. BP stations green is the gas pump. Filled my truck up with Gasoline made it 3 mile then truck died at at stop lite. Drain out gas and filled with diesel , no more issues. Filled my TDI jetta with Gasoline this time the station's diesel pump had gasoline in it, again got luck and pumped gas out filled with diesel fuel and still driving it.
I'm glad you covered this Tim, you said in another video that you would, good to see the follow up here. I know some old timers that would say "if you aren't making mistakes, you aren't doing enough", you definitely do enough, so a few mistakes are bound to surface. Great informational video!!!

I broke my rear housing on my first Yanmar with a 12" auger on the post hole digger.
Lowered the 3 point lever all the way down because it wasn't getting a bite.
When it did, it screwed itself so deep it cracked the rear-end from the force.
We all have lessons to learn , hopefully some can learn from others mistakes.
It is the way of the tractor. I can't tell you how many times I have miscalculated and busted something. Just last fall I ripped a stack off a JD 2955 and had to replace the entire muffler. Thank you for sharing. I'm sure you will save many people the same heartache!

Great Vlog! We all make mistakes, I am a newby when it comes to tractors, but I lovum and I got a need for one, I bought my Kubota L4701 4 yrs ago and not having a farm background forced me to ask all the dumb questions and read the dang manual. I refuse to pay a dealer to service my tractor mostly because learning to do the service myself has helped me get more familiar with the tractor and learn my machine. One of the very first things I did was knock down a Trellis that took 3 days to build with the bucket with my wife watching. I learned something that day , like beware of your surroundings at all times , but hey! I’m still learning and still reading the manual and watching Vlogs of guys like you I can certainly learn from! Absolutely distroyed my BX PTO. Shaft disconnected from tiller. Amazing how much damage can happen so quickly when your shaft is banging on the 3 point @ 540 rpm. Found the pto shaft on the ground still connected to my tractor...or I should say, parts of my tractor.
Ever wonder what's inside? A lot of gears and oil. Got a good look inside, but if you want to see whats inside your tractors rear end I don't recommend my method. Absolutely heart breaking. Lucky the insurance I had to purchase to finance the BX covered the over 7K in repair. Yeah According to the dealer,
PTO damage happens a lot. I was not the first and Tim you weren't the last.
When I got my tiller for BX it said to make sure PTO shaft was right length. They said it normally had to be cut off and it did have to be cut.

An honest mistake indeed. It’s hard to imagine that a dealer would cover that under warranty but how nice that they did.
Seriously, warranty doesn't cover user error.. I think they were just happy with Tim's business over the years and covered it for him!
Thank you. Many of us see so many warning labels required by lawyers that we run the risk of ignoring the one written by engineers. In manuals, I always ignore the first few pages loaded with legally inspired warnings. Thanks again Tim, it takes a big man to openly discuss a big mistake. One that many of us would have made.

Tim: First some background. Based on my land needs, and based largely on the content of your videos, in May of 2019, I purchased a 2032R with loader and backhoe. Early this spring, my son was working on a section of road (long driveway) and got too close to the edge which collapsed causing the tractor to almost tip over. The unit was listing at about 60 degrees from vertical and only a tree prevented it from tipping further and rolling down the hill. I was concerned but not upset. All I could say to him was that I was sure he would never make that mistake again. That is the only comment I can offer you as well - I am sure you will never make that mistake again.
My Dad told me one time that everybody makes mistakes. He then proceeded to tell me that I didn't have to make all the mistakes. I could let somebody else have their turn once in a while.

First off I really enjoy your channel. This was a very interesting episode because I actually know a John deer dealership owner who had the same issue. He had a brand new tractor which he set up with a tiller that’s was over sized for the tractor. He lifted the tiller and the pro shaft went into the rear end and did exactly what you did. Accidents happen and lesson learned.
Don't feel so bad. Ive done that, but only once. (I've wrtecked a double hydraulic pump by connecting an outlet to the wrong fitting. 3seconds, pumpruined)
i had that problem with the PTO but not on a mower but on a square baler from Welger die got the shaft correctly the the PTO flies off but it still works :D
I would have missed that one too. There are so many warning labels that I just don’t see them any more. But I do read the manuals...in the evening AFTER I use the implement. Great video by the way.

Oh my. God bless you, Tim! All of us manly men have made expensive mistakes in multiple. And yes, I can understand completely when you say you weren't happy with yourself, ha! Been there, done that. In fact, it seems I'm always there. Somewhere as we approach middle age, there is a two-week period where we make no mistakes because we have finally learned from all of the mistakes we've made in our youth. Then, after that magical two-week period, the mistakes start up again. Only now they are caused by old age and senility... LOL

Before lawyers and the plastic PTO shaft covers a man could see the shaft and how much compression or extension was left........
Don’t forget...the lawyers show up AFTER the injury or fatality.
@@larrycainjr Maybe it's a Texas thang but we don't get too close to rotating shafts,spinning blades,know that we can fall off of ladders etc.....I still have all of my pieces and parts. More COMMON SENSE than most I suppose.

I’ve always been told that if you cut something too short, just cut off the short end.

The the curse words began to fly. My point is we all are human and we all make mistakes. We all have a day coming and sometimes we simply are not paying attention.

Almost did the same thing with a 3pt chipper. It was my first implement I bought and didn't catch the part about cutting the pto shaft. It bound up when I lifted to max height. No damage but took me a sec to figure out what was going on. :^)

In the video at about 5:30 while you were describing things, I started thinking "Oh NO!". Ouch indeed! Well, we all live and learn from our mistakes. But, more importantly, we all need to learn from other peoples mistakes. To that end, I really think you're doing such a favor to your readers by carefully explaining what happened and how it could have been avoided. I, for one, thank you for this posting.

In my opinion a real man will admit to his errors. I tell people all the time that I have learned more about how to do things by my mistakes then by my successes. Our only hope is that others will listen and learn from my mistakes and same themselves the cost.

Accidents happen. I work highway road maintenance. We break stuff all the time. Our theory is accidents happen, at least no one got hurt except your pride. But you manned up and accepted your accident and shared it for us all to learn from

My uncle did this same thing with his brand new tractor (less than 50 hrs) while trying out his new 14’ rotovator/tiller. It was in the shop for several months. The PTO shaft was too long. Very good reminder!!

I grew up farming and ranching. You get things done. A lot of times that means avoid safety decals and manuals. I transitioned to working at the local John Deere in High School. One day got into an argument with the lead guy because of tire pressures for a tractor fixing to get shipped out. The manual said a certain psi and he wanted to go higher. I learned then that even the pros do opposite of what the instructions say at times. Stuff happens and we learn from it. Thanks for showing us so that it doesn’t happen again.
