Replace impeller/Rebuild waterpump on a Yamaha F4 outboard

  • In this video I rebuild the water pump, because the engine had a cooling issue, I only wanted to replace the impeller, but after inspecting the housing and baseplate I decided to change them too. I bought a waterpump kit, which contained all my parts, this is cheaper then buying the parts separately.

    I have my Mariner 4 apart ATM, would not shift gears.
    Upon closer inspection I found the gearbox drain AWOL, all parts rusted and the dog clutch seized to the drive shaft spline.
    I have soaked everything in white vinegar for 48 hours and everything is shiny again. I have cycled the prop shaft through the freezer for 6 hours, into the oven to bake for an hour, back into the freezer again, back in the oven, allowed to cool. A long socket fitted over the shaft and allowed me to drive the dog clutch down the spline, and the spring is still good too. Back into the vinegar to remove the rust from the surface now exposed, may require further cleaning with a wire brush or careful filing, looks like I'll win this one, and I hope this information proves helpful to others.

    Great video Jack, amazing english esp. technical terminology for a non english speaker. I have the same outboard, bought it second hand, when using it I noticed that the last section of throttle doesn't increase the speed/revs (probably the last 1/3 tot 1/4) , is this normal for these engines or is there possibly something wrong (with the carb. or combustion)? Otherwise it runs fine, no starting issues, cooling system flows well. Thanks, Tim in New Zealand

    A question about the water pipe when you put back the section , looks like there is no clams to take them sealed ?

    • @JackTekkel
      @JackTekkel  Před 6 lety

      christian genest No just the rubber on water pump seals it. So it is important that you don't damage it when you put it back together, so a bit of soap liquid is the best for that. Don't be afraid to use a good amount.

    Hello ! Was out on the water for an hr no issues with this engine. I stopped it for 25 mins and went to start again and it wouldn't. It's my first outboard and didn't know you have to put the throttle on a certain a position and then pull the rope, I have been pulling the rope without throttle on set position and It has always taken me 7 pulls or more to start it so I think I flooded the motor. How do I de flood? is there such a thing?
    I tried putting throttle all the way open and choke closed to possibly deflood and cranked it ten to fifteen times and then tried with throttle on the start position to crank but have had no luck starting, tried also with choke on for a few strokes with no luck either. Could I have fouled up the spark plug?

    Hi Jack, Could you also make a video of Un-clogging the Cooling system?

    • @JackTekkel
      @JackTekkel  Před 7 lety +1

      Hi, luckily my cooling system isn't clogged. So no video on that. Why do you think your system is clogged? No cooling? Maybe your impeller is busted. Also check if the screens at the bottom of the tail section are open, that's where the water is being sucked in. Or remove the screens and clean behind them, sometimes there's algae or other growths behind them. Also is your thermostat opening? Or remove the thermostat and take some compressed air and try blowing out the system, maybe some vinegar solution to dissolve lime deposits.

      @rvob1210 Před 7 lety +1

      Hi Jack, I was just curious as i had No Cooling, and brought it to the repair shop, which said it was Clogged and there was no problem with the Impeller, so next time it gets Clogged i would like to try myself and save the 80,-€ :)

    Jack.
    I am investigating a water leak on one of these engines. It comes from the upper and lower case rubber mounting. The lower rubber mounting nearest the cavitation plate is the one leaking water. Water also seeps from the split joint on vertical outer casing tube. I will use some sealant on that when re-assembling.
    Any ideas or thoughts? It does it while tank testing and water is pumping from tel tale hole with good pressure.No loud exhaust noise and no oil in water or oil leaks. Engine starts and runs good.
    Your accent is amazing! Greetings from Scotland.

    • @JackTekkel
      @JackTekkel  Před 8 lety

      Some water leakage from the bottom mounting is normal, don't line up the opening in the plastic washer in front of the opening in the rubber. That will reduce Some leakage. What do you mean with the split joint? You mean between the tail and the midsection? As far as I know thats no problem. You can put a little bit of sealent on there. Don't think its critical. Just make sure engine temp is ok.

    • @alexbowie6316
      @alexbowie6316 Před 8 lety

      Thanks Jack. I did stagger the rubber mounting and plastic washer, so they were not plumb with each other. There may be a bit more wear in these rubber mountings, which is contributing to water loss.

      Just search online, Google or other search engine. Or go find an outboard shop in your neighbourhood, maybe they have something or they can order it for you. I always like to visit a shop, because if the parts are wrong then you can go back. Plus you can ask questions.

    • @kennymarto1316

      Oil and grease are mostly petroleum based. Rubber don't like petroleum. You can use the soap or pure silicone oil/grease.

    • @JackTekkel
      @JackTekkel  Před 5 lety +1

      As It Is I need to see it, but I’d imagine you would need an internal bearing puller, slide hammer. Maybe heating the casing around the bearing at the same time.

      JackTekkel I heated the housing using my oven. The bearing then just fell out. Cooled it all down the inserted oil seals. Hammered bearing back in. Sorted.

    • @JackTekkel
      @JackTekkel  Před 5 lety

      As It Is oké that’s good. I did it once on a scooter engine for the crankshaft bearings. But I did it with a blowtorch. Heating around the casing. It always involves some heating. Good work and good luck.

    Nog tips voor problemen met de carburateur op deze motor? Ik blijf maar problemen houden dat hij vaak vast loopt en geen benzine in de motor spuit.

    • @JackTekkel
      @JackTekkel  Před 6 lety

      Bedoel je uitvallen? En is dat stationair? Stationair schroefje anders iets opendraaien. En er kan eigenlijk weinig mis aan een carburateur, een goede schoonmaakbeurt doet vaak wonderen. Maak alles en met name de sproeier goed schoon, met bijvoorbeeld remmenreiniger of anders carburateurreiniger. Soms kan het opvoerblokje/filter tussen de carb en de tank ook problemen geven, maar dat uit elkaar halen kan vaak problemen opleveren, dus probeer eerst eens de carburateur goed schoon te maken en kijk ook of het flotterje goed zijn werk doet. Kijk ook of je een filter in je tank hebt zitten en of dat filter en/of tank smerig is. Als er namelijk een obstructie ergens zit loopt een motor ook niet lekker.

    • @foxbow90
      @foxbow90 Před 6 lety

      JackTekkel bedankt, ik heb vaak problemen met opstarten van de motor. Als ik dan benzine direct in de motor spuit via de bougie dan wil hij soms wel op gang komen. Het probleem is vaak dat er wel benzine in de carburateur gaat, maar dat de naald dan vast zit en de benzine niet verder kan (ik ben niet zo goed in de terminologie van motoren😅). Maar je hebt dus dat kleine messing schroefje aan de onderkant, als je die los maakt zou er benzine uit moeten komen. Bij mij is dat vaak niet. Soms helpt het als ik hem een tik geef. Dan komt de naald los en loopt ie weer, net zo lang tot hij een lange tijd stil staat.

    • @JackTekkel
      @JackTekkel  Před 6 lety

      foxbow90 denk dat je vlottertje beetje blijft hangen, en dan dicht blijft zitten, dan kan er geen benzine aangezogen worden, dus carburateur eraf halen en schoonmaken, ook dan het vlotterbakje eraf halen en daarbinnen alles schoonmaken en kijken of de vlotter goed heen en weer kan.

    • @foxbow90
      @foxbow90 Před 6 lety

      JackTekkel inmiddels uit elkaar gehaald, en even alles laten weken in benzine en met lucht uitgespoten. Hij werkt nu weer prima. Ik vond mijn motor van de week op de bodem van het meer, maar hij heeft gelukkig niks geleden. Nu ik nog de carburateur heb schoon gemaakt werkt hij soepeler dan ooit tevoren.
