      But she did choose.
Her sister asked her to stop the donations, so she can die...
You could clearly see that it wasnt easy on her to say yes to that...
This isnt just mother against daughter, its about annas morals and her and her sisters promise ...
That poor girl had more on her shoulders than she shouldve had.
Wouldve been hard for me to say to my family that i wont do an operation that would save my sister, even if she asked me for that and even if i dont really want to do that...

    • @joanavitorino1436
      @joanavitorino1436 Před 4 lety +45

@-- I said so long as there's love and RESPECT. For example, having another baby so as to harvest stem cells from a newborn sibiling is a PERFECTLY UNHARMAFUL way of helping a sick child by having another baby, one that you can love as much as the eldest. Donating a piece of the liver, which can grow back - another almost harmful example, which occurs ALL THE TIME. When you go out of your way to sacrifice your youngest's organs and health, that is different. I answered the way I did, because even in the movie they didn't want to harvest the youngest's organs when they had her, that came up later, so let's not judge people so harshly.

In the book they go more in depth on the reason why they had Anna in the first place: to save Kate. They weren't planning on having another child, but when they realized they could have one that could help save their other child, they went ahead and did it, which makes me feel sick. I understand the need to save your child that is dying, but don't do it at the sake of your other child.

Book basically implied that everything would have been fine had the donation just happened, instead of the moral lesson of letting go/ acceptance. I felt like the twist where she was just doing what her older sister asked of her got undermined in the book with the ending whereas in the movie, the impact had to follow through.

Immediately after she won the lawsuit for the rights to her body she was involved in an accident and died and her organs were donated because her lawyer allowed them to. Personally, I don't care how sick one child might be, no parent has the right to risk the survival and safety of one child to save another. Not the degree that Anna's parents are constantly doing. I mean, it's one thing if a child voluntarily wants to help their sibling, but only if they're old enough to understand the consequences of such things and it's not going to put them in danger. It's quite another to constantly force a child to give up parts of themselves to someone who might not even survive the procedure.

Brian later called Sara out and made her see that she was the spoiled brat. He pointed out that it was she that was endangering both Kate and Anna's lives by forcing them to undergo surgery.
At some point, Sara stopped listening to her family and the doctors when they warned her that the kidney transplant wasn't going to be successful. Even her older sister, Suzanne(Kellyin the film), knew what she was doing was wrong and asked her to let Kate go. Sara refused and her behavior is what lead to her neglecting her family and the strained relationship between her and Suzanne.
It took the family going to court and Anna suing Sara for medical emancipation to finally get her to listen to them

      1: She's under 18.
2: She's obviously not willing. Heads up, folks. If you ever find yourself in a position where you're being pressured to test if you're a viable candidate for a donation, tell the doctor you're being pressured into it. That becomes the END of the discussion.

Reading the book is so much harder. You can really tell from Sara's actions that she does not love Anna for the right reasons or really the way that she should. Its sara making all the choices for Kate and Anna. They are both being abused in many ways through the whole story because Sara is selfish and cant let kate go.
It is amazing to me how Anna does not have resentment towards her mother. Sara had no emotional connection to her in the book, only the husband really did.

Before the verdict, Anna finally told Sara about Kate's wishes to die. While in shock at first, she comes to terms with it and wished that she was told this a while back. Sara soon understood that Anna was only trying to protect Kate because she didn't want their mother being mad at her. She admits she is proud of Anna for standing up for her own rights to her body and make medical decisions. That scene, her death and in Kate's epilogue were the closest Sara has in showing emotional connection to her.

The saddest fact is in the twist itself. Jesse is just wanting his sister to speak her piece for what is basically her having to be a donor for her dying sister. An aspect she grasps but the mom is lording over her like it’s an obligation but says “she never had to do anything she didn’t want to”.
And the icing is how It’s Kate (they dying sister) making Anna do all that.
She grasps her mortality and knows it’s not fair her sister will have to take a bullet in the stomach so she doesn’t have to take one in the shoulder.
(Yes I know Anna was a savior sibling basically bred to be a nearly perfect organ donor for Kate my point is she knows it isn’t fair if both her and her sister die)

I get where the mum is coming from, but would you put one life at risk to save another? If I were Anna, i'd be protesting too.

You know what I hated in this movie? The damn end.
The book had such a good ending, it made me weep. That was one of the first books that made me cry. So I was pretty hyped when I saw that there'll be a movie. I was so frustrated that they changed the ending completely and didn't go more into detail with the characters, like the lawyer.

Watching this scene just makes me wish that the movie had gone with the novels ending. I just get so ticked off at how nasty Sarah gets with Anna. Calling your daughter a “spoiled little shit”, are you serious? I always felt an uneasiness when watching this movie, constantly questioning whether Anna was truly loved by her parents. With Brian it’s more apparent that he loves all three of his kids, even if he struggles to consider all of their feelings. But the guilt he holds for the pain he and Sarah have afflicted on Anna over the years weighs heavy on him. The deleted scenes so more of Brian’s guilt and tenseness to Anna, which I think should’ve been shown. But with Sarah, her desperation and determination to save Kate is so strong that it trumps everything else in her life. That includes her kids as well. But at least with Jesse you can see there’s love for him. She did have him before Kate got sick, so her feelings for him are less questionable. But because Anna was meant to be a donor baby, and because of her desire to save her daughter at all cost, the maternal “love” she claimed to have for Anna always seemed fake. And scenes like this only drive that point even further. She doesn’t care about Anna and how this has affected her. And to have the nerve to call her a spoil little shit is down right audacious. It felt satisfying in the novel when Anna won the case. But (spoilers for those who haven’t read the book; at your own risk) her death immediately was utterly heartbreaking. And yet it’s at that moment, when she realizes she has lost her, that Sarah’s love for Anna finally comes out. After spending her entire life trying to save one daughter, the one she lost was the one she owed so much and had treated so horribly. It’s that old saying: you didn’t know what a good thing you had when had it. It’s only afterwards we realize what it meant. And for Sarah, she realized too late what Anna to her. The movies ending, although not bad (I’m happy Anna got to live here), leaves me feeling unsatisfied with the resolution of Anna and Sarah’s relationship as mother and daughter. Even that final shot of them smiling at each other in Montana isn’t enough. Too much was said and done and Anna had gone through so much hurt and crap from her mother, that I felt we needed to see a moment of reconciliation. At the very least, have Sarah say something of an apology.

I remember this movie has ever stayed as my no.1 favorite movie until I discovered "17 again" and then "The Man From UNCLE"
But they're still my no. 1 in each genre :)

They were the worst parents ever, they had another child just to use as a donor. She knew it too, she knew she wasn't important to them, which is so sad.
