The Paul Paray Mercury recordings with the Detroit SO I've heard have all been, without fail, superb and this is another such. I guess it happens that way sometimes : a kind of osmosis involving a particular combination of conductor, players and studio engineering which can never be repeated. Brilliant!

Indeed Max! I live in Detroit, and the older musicians and critic considered the Detroit Symphony in Paray's time the greatest French orchestra in the world.

Our family got to see the American men's singles figure-skating finals when they were held in Seattle in 1968. Aural memory tells me that the winner, Tim Wood, used the Masaniello Overture as one of four pieces of classical music in his program, and I'm sure it came from Mercury/Paray/Detroit.

Bravo, Rodders, pour cette reproduction si dynamique des Ouvertures d'Auber, enregistrées à Detroit le 5 avril 1959.

I have entire operas of the first two. Fra Diavolo was even a movie with Laurel and Hardy.
