- How I spent a month travelling overland in South East Asia, from Singapore to Vietnam by train. This video shows what my journey looked like, and covers how to re-create a similar trip yourself.
I travelled from Singapore to Hanoi by train. The route saw me travel more than 4,500km in total, through five countries: Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. In total, I took ten trains, three busses, two ferries, and a whole bunch of taxis, rickshaws, and mopeds. It was an epic adventure and I hope the video captures a little of that.
With this video I wanted to show what the trains in South East Asia are like, especially the overnight trains. I even filmed inside the loos on those! Hopefully, this will help anyone planning their own overland journey in SE Asia.

There are some long train journeys there! I do love travelling by train, though. It's a good way to see the scenery unfold in front of you. You really get a sense of that in this video.

The HCMC to Da Nang train looks amazing! I was there recently but I traveled around by bus. On the way back I took a flight, from Hue to HCMC. I couldn't stand the sleeper buses anymore, the beds were too short for my me, haha.
Haha yeah I've never been good on the buses - you'd probably never get me on an overnight bus in Vietnam!! The trains were great though - I like being able to walk around!

Hi Karen!! You can book most of the tickets online - with the exception of the Penang ferry (if you take it) and the train from Butterworth to the border. I've got a whole blog post with loads of details about the trip - including how to book. And I suggest you book as far in advance as possible!

I shot this on my Canon Powershot gx7 mark ii. I don't make CZcams videos anymore but these days I shoot all video on my phone (Google Pixel 8 Pro) so technically I think I downgraded!

As for how long - it depended on the country and my time constraints. So it's really up to you :)
Heath what a great video. I'm planning travel with my partner and 3year old so thinking about ways to travel but utilising our time effectively. Trains is a grand solution for this. Now to get my research on!!!!

You can't book this as one trip, it's a series of trains and you have to book everything yourself. My blog post should help :)

@@BB-qk5zz I always do - travelling solo means it's extra important to take care and stay safe! But I also remember that bad things can happen anywhere, so I try not to let so-called dangerous places put me off :)
How much cost by train from Singapore to Vietnam? How much total hours of travel? Is it possible to travel from Hanoi to Hong Kong by Road/Bus ?

The exact prices and number of hours varies depending on which trains/buses etc you opt for.
As far as I know it's possible to continue overland from Hanoi to Hong Kong, but I've not done it myself.
How did you find crossing the border at Poipet? I've heard various horror stories about scams etc
I'd heard the same, but I was totally fine. A few people hassled me trying to sell me a private taxi rather than the bus to Siem Reap, but because there were a few of us in a group it worked out cheaper to do that anyway. I've been told to be wary of pickpockets so just keep your wits about you I guess - but that's the same at many borders!
As Emily is saying its fine, but be wary of pickpockets and people selling hotels, transport, etc. I heard a lot of stories too but been there twice. The border is fine. Of course, you need to fill in some papers, but no issues. However, once we were a bit ripped off at the money exchange at the border. Not an issue anymore.

I just have a question, and I haven't found it on the site. How much I need for do the some trip on the some days in whole trip. how about you?
I didn't give an overall price because it depends entirely on you and the way you travel. You can check all the train/bus ticket prices on the sites I linked to, and that will give an idea of travel costs. Everything else will depend on you: will you stay in hostels or hotels, will you eat at restaurants or streetfood, will you go to spas, sightsee, book tours, etc? The cost of the trip will vary so much for each person so all I can give are the actual ticket costs! Sorry I can't be more helpful than that!

Guide me how to book train from Bangkok to Aranyaprathet
You don’t need to make a booking in advance, you just go the ticket office at Bangkok train station and ask for a seat you wish. Coz this line is NO air conditioning train or the express train. There are only ordinary trains with the 3rd class seat service. :-)
You have to book this one in person at the station. I popped in the night before to book my ticket :)

I'm also a lady and a solo traveler around your age and I'm currently living in TX - I looked up the cost of flights to Singapore from Austin on a whim and they are waaaaay cheaper than I expected and there's no time like the present to take a dream vacation! I do have a few questions though:
Do you wish you visited just one place or are you happy to have gotten a taste of everything?
What did you want to get the most of out of your trip?
I want to appreciate the food and natural beauty and culture but I'm not really sure the best way to go about it as I think I'd be happy visiting anywhere in Asia like S. Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Laos, etc... but I can't decide if I should just go to just Singapore or just S. Korea (I really want to see Jeju island) and spend a lot of time there or try something like you did.
How much leisure time did you allot to each city/location you visited?
How long was your trip time in total and how much would you say you spent actually traveling? I do love looking out the window and seeing the landscape change and I don't have a problem sleeping on busses or trains so I think I'd quite enjoy that.
If possible, can you estimate about how much you spent in transportation? That's another big factor that would help me decide what to do. I'm a cheap traveler lol and I might rather save my limited dough for splurging on food and tickets to parks/guided tours/museums and such.
Did you have to buy any of your lodging or overland/sea transportation tickets ahead of time or was it pretty easy obtaining them at the stations and hotels/motels in-person?

Hi Alex!! Wow this was a long question. I think I cover a lot of it in the blog, the link is in the video description, especially the part about buying tickets and arranging travel etc. I mainly booked stuff in advance a day or two before as I like to make plans on the fly!
I had visited almost all these places before for longer periods of time, this particular trip was about the journey for me. I'd spend a night or two in each place and have at least a day to enjoy the sites. Cambodia was the only country I had not visited before and I spent several days in both Siem Reap and Phnom Penh to make the most of it.
If it's your first time I personally say spend longer in a few places rather than travelling a lot to reach lots of places. Singapore however is very small so you could do Singapore + another country and have plenty of time to enjoy both. It depends how long you have.
I spent a month taking this train journey. I honestly couldn't tell you how much I spent on all the tickets as it was a long time ago, but most were fairly low priced. You can look up the ticket prices in advance for almost all the trains so it's pretty easy to get an idea of what it will cost you.

If youre going by train, is there a currency converter on the train?
I don't think so. There are lots of different trains but I never saw a currency converted on any. There are some at the border stations though, like at the border of Cambodia and Thailand. Hope that helps!

I think they might have gone up since I did this trip, so the best way to calculate costs is to search for each part of the journey individually, write down the price, and then add them all up.

How to clear ...customs ..VISA ...
I expected ..you will show that
You aren't allowed to film at any of the customs checks unfortunately, so I wasn't able to show it. I have a blog post with lots of helpful info (the link is in the video description). But to be honest, it's all fairly straightforward... There are signs at all the checkpoints and you can't go wrong. What kind of visa you need depends on your nationality, I'm British and was able to get a visa on arrival at all the countries I visited!
