  • Wilmington & Western 4-4-0 98 leads the Autumn Leaf Special on the eighteen mile round trip from Greenbank Station to Hockessin, Delaware.
This 1909-built Alco is one of the few "American" types operating that was built in the 20th century. It has been a part of the W&W collection since the 1960s.

Really great job! That's a lot of wheel slip at 2:49! I should definitely get to wilmington and western soon!

Wilmington & Western 98 is a 4-4-0 “American” Type, built by ALCO in 1909 for the Mississippi Central Railroad. It pulled passenger trains through out the MCRR system until retirement in 1944. It was used by the Louisiana Eastern Railroad until it was retired in 1960. And then 98 was purchased by Strasburg Railroad and returned to operation by the Wilmington & Western Railroad from a restoration from 1964 to 1972. It ran at the Wilmington & Western with W&W 37 and 58, until the early 2010s. Today, 98 is undergoing her Federally Mandated 1,472 Day Inspection at the Wilmington & Western Railroad.

Strasburg did not purchase 98, it was privately owned and stored at Strasburg briefly before it went to W&W.

That Lunkenheimer 3 Chime on #98 sounds like Cass Shay #4's whistle!

That was an epic wheel slip. Thank you so much for posting. It's also rare to see a 4-4-0 American type steam locomotive these days from that time era.

Great video! The 4-4-0 is now listed out of service-1472 Inspection. She was removed from service in 2017 to undergo the federally-mandated 1,472 day inspection, a process which will require disassembly of the locomotive for inspection and repair.

Nice engine. Nice rolling stock to. Nice tracks to. Top notch. Do they won the tracks or are they owned by another company that let them use the tracks? Nice vide photography to. Well done.

Wow, I really wish US excursion and tourist steam would whistle less and we could hear a little chuffing.

I think that the mechanical bell doesn’t fit the locomotive and should be hand-rung

Why does 98 look like a d16sb? In some aspects they look similar, and is it common for people to think that?

Filthy firing. I don't think that I saw a clean stack in the whole video, except at the very end. Loved the video, though!

It isn't always the fireman's fault. When you get a lot of slack in a load, or a poor quality grade of coal with too much volatile matter, there isn't much that can be done to cut down on smoke.
This video was taken before we started using higher grade Pocahontas coal. At the time, we were using a lower grade, higher volatile coal
