CLIP DESCRIPTION:
While collecting scrap railroad tracks, the Rocket Boys get a scare when they hear a train coming.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
NASA engineer Homer H. Hickam, Jr.'s autobiography provided the basis for this drama about a teenager coming of age at the dawn of the space race. In 1957, Homer Hickam (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a high school student in Coalwood, West Virginia when the Soviet Union launches Sputnik, the first man-made satellite. While most of his friends and neighbors react with fear or distrust, Homer is instantly fascinated and begins studying everything he can find on jet and rocket design. While many of Homer's friends are puzzled by his new obsession, several new friends share his enthusiasm, and with the encouragement of his teacher (Laura Dern), Homer and his fellow "Rocket Boys" begin designing and launching their own homemade missiles. However, Homer's father (Chris Cooper) takes a dim view of his son's interest in rockets and is convinced Homer's future should be the same as his own, working in the local coal mines. October Sky mixes the drama of traditional family conflicts with a nostalgic glimpse of life in the mid-50's and a look at the earliest days of our journey into space.

I love the slow progression from relief and exhaustion to sheer, utter panic. 😂
October 1957 When Steam locomotives and Sputnik existed at the same time.
Nick P. Wilde 🚂🚀
The Norfolk & Western retired its last steam locomotive in 1960.
The N&W railroad ran steam long after most other railroads transitioned to diesel with the last one being retired in 1960 this was because at the time N&W steamers were more powerful than diesels so it was better to use one steam locomotive per train than 2 diesels. The most powerful 4-8-4 northern ever built were the N&W j class locomotives with a tractive effort of 84,981 pounds the F7a a new diesel model at the time had a tractive effort of 40,000 pounds and the N&W also had the Y6a 2-8-8-2 which had a tractive effort of 166,000 pounds so it would take 5 diesels to pull a train that one Y6a could pull but by 1959 newer diesels had been released that were stronger and easier to maintain and on October 24th, 1959 the last revenue steam trip on the N&W was pulled by N&W 611. By 1960 all of the N&W steam locomotives were officially retired one of the last steam holdouts in the country had completely dieselized but the N&W still ran steam 7 years after one of its main competitors the southern railway had completely dieselized in 1953. Several N&W steam locomotives still exist today and many still run like N&W 611 the last of the J class left and Strasburg 475 a former N&W 4-8-0 now running on the Strasburg railway in Pennsylvania.
The B&O ran steam up until 58.
Steam wasn't erradicated on British Railways until 1968.
Nowadays, it's illegal for scrapyards to accept any part of the railways for this exact reason.
Yep sometimes rails that looked abandoned are simply used infrequently.
Al Boreland Yep, you always gotta remember the short lines!
Scrapyard: “Ummmmm.... where did you get this?”
Person: “Oh from that old freight train line down the road”
Scrapyard: “You mean the one that’s abandoned right?”
Person: “........”
Lol, my scrapyard was hesitant when me and my buddy haulled in almost a ton of railroad clips that was setting back in the woods for decades. They took it though. We got over $120 for a hour of work.
They'll still take it. Scrap is not a business that square people get in to.
You gotta appreciate that scene at 1:54 showing 1 solid line. Then the very next scene showing a switch and the line they are on is already detached from the main. That's good suspense
I've seen this movie in 8th grade in my science class, and I laughed at the part where the train takes a different route.
6th grade, everyone in class was on the edge of their seats. Then the train didn't crash and everyone was disappointed. XD
7th grade😂
10th grade
7th grade everyone was laughing so hard because the boys made a fool of themselves
I saw* Not “I’ve seen”
The most relatable emotion at 1:13 for many circumstances growing up.
"...what have we done?"
We did this film in April, 1998. Four of us from TVRM went with the locomotive. NS would not allow 4501 to pull the train, so NS supplied diesels to tow up to the movie set. Once we were on scenc, the art department spent a few days painting the locomotive and hopper cars as N&W equipment. Then O. Winston Link arrived on set to do the cameo appearance as the train engineer. The actual engineer, a TVRM crew member, ducked out of sight for the shot. Bill Purdie was not at all involved in this movie production.
I am running 4501 the first and last time you see it in the film.
You are the second person whose comment I've read, stating that you took part in this film. I'm blown away. Are you saying that you are actually hiding in this very scene?
The four of us from TVRM that went split into two team of two (engineer and fireman). For the O. Winston Link scene (the clip shown here), the other crew was on the locomotive. I was the engineer for the scene showing just the driving wheels with steam coming out of the cylinder cocks and the daytime scene of the steam locomotive going over the creek bridge.
Mark Gray Ah, I see. Wow, I consider that a double dose of honor: Driving such a beautiful locomotive for a truly epic film.
Mark Ray I can't wait to see #4501 run again!! This is going to be exciting! When I took my cab ride in Southern #630 on the Missionary Ridge Local to the shop in July 2011, I actually got to stand on the running board of Southern #4501 in the shop. Hopefully I will be able to ride #4501's cab once it is restored.
Erich Diebold I am glad that Norfolk Southern is still continuing their 21st Century Steam program, despite CSX being the only commercial railroad to say no to steam excursions.
I love how they're flailing and trying to stop the train while O. Winston Link just casually waves and toots the whistle as he takes the switch 😂
NO
October sky is now an all time classic based off of a real life story and is also my favourite movie
one of the best movies of all time my opinion
Agreed
This and Remember The Titans
When I was young, I used to wander the still operating line running by my grandparents house and collect old rusted metal, so log as it wasn't part of the track itself. If it was lying on the side, however, it was mine. By the time I had stopped(as I found out I was breaking the law by trespassing and potentially stealing), I had a good pile of spikes, bolts and fishplates. We ended up throwing them away, not sure if we just wanted to get rid of them or if we knew selling them would incriminate us. I was 10 at the time, and the memories still live on.
Nobody was going to miss that stuff. The railroads never pick it up. Throw steel in the recycling, not the trash.
I love the whistle of that engine.
1:27 LOL FOR THEIR REACTIONS THEY LOOKED LIKE THEY WERE DAYDREAMING THOUGH
4501 really stole the show!
Absolute beauty.
Agreed, she’s a true southern beauty
@@sweetsunnyvibes ?
Luna McLean He’s expressing his emotions.
Good
I vaguely remember an alternate version where the train conductor flips them off.
*Engineer*
At least I know the 1 pair of tracks by my house are actually abandoned, since the switch has been removed and the crossing was paved over
I’ve heard Roy Lee running the wrong way was an accident at least one take but they left it in
1:51 When your parents tell you to do someting, you hear they coming inside and don't remember if you did it, then go see if you did it
2:00 love that whistle
Me too
Same
It’s a beautiful whistle I can hear it from here
I think all of us can agree that the locomotive in this clip (aka southern 4501) has a very badass whistle
Not too bad. But in my opinion, the best train whistle belongs to the Big Boy 4-8-8-4 locomotive.
This reminds me of stand by me of the railroad track.
And the Fried Green Tomatoes scene
I don't know if anyone knows this or if its mentioned in the comments but October Sky is actually an anagram for Rocket Boys and thats how they got the name of the movie October Sky as well as the fact that Sputnik was launched in October
#4501's restoration is almost complete. I got to stand on the side of the running board next to the engine's boiler when I visited Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. That was also the same time I paid $20 to ride in the newly restored steam locomotive #630.
9 years on and shes now the main one pulling the local right now
1:15 Sudden realization
Watching this clip and reading the comments fills me with a feeling of bittersweet nostalgia
This is one of my favorite scenes in the movie as well, which I remember watching for the first time in Chemistry class eight years ago. Of course, as you can probably guess from my profile picture, my interest lies more in seeing the actual locomotive than in the underlying science of rocket building. Furthermore, as proof of how much of a railroad nut I am, I believe the engine in this scene is Southern Railway #4501, a 12-wheeled (2-8-2) locomotive built in 1911 in Philadelphia.
Woah!
yeah... i was freaking out when i saw it...
@@floppaeditz123 In the same way the characters were, or more out of joy at seeing the locomotive in action?
That train driver is the biggest savage troll ever!
Man for 4501 from the southern railway is a really good actor in the scene
actually it was used as a n&w steam engine in the movie as it still works for southern to this day
@@Uno_611 i now they repaint her in a N&W livery
@@Uno_611 uhh southern doesn’t exist anymore they merged with the Norfolk and western in the 1980s and became Norfolk southern 4501now resides at the Tennessee valley railroad museum in Chattanooga
Everybody's here for the railroad, I'm here for the rockets :-)
Your a rocket loser
That's nice :)
right movie, wrong clip lol
*You're
David Bergara González Ahem, everyone includes you.
Stand By Me: Running from the train
October Sky: Running towards the train
How the tables turn
Roses are red
Violets are blue
Most Railfans are here only because of 4501
Don't deny it you are too
Nice
That is Southern Railway #4501 and the late Great Bill Purdie (of Southern Railway Fame) at the throttle! The Whistle was borrowed from Norfolk and Western J Class 4-8-4 #611 preserved at the Virginia Transportation Museum. The 4501 is currently being restored at the Tennessee Valley Railway Museum for excursion used by Norfolk Southern.
That is NOT 611's whistle
Southern 4501 is one of my favourite steam locomotives
STOP THE TRAIN
chopped exactly at the o. winston link cameo !!!
1:02 train coming.
Starring southern 4501
I think I might have found 3 goofs in this entire scene:
1:36 The rail was closer to the other pieces of rail, but at 1:38, it's a bit further away from where it once was.
1:54 Notice how there's just one track? At 2:01, a junction just magically appears.
And at 1:48, more of the track is seen, but at 1:58, more of the track was taken apart.
Whistle Workz Productions exactly, the phantom switch
Also I just noticed, why did they spent all that time removing the track when it there were already taken apart further up lol
I feel like I know, but I do not
That train scene gives me stand by me vibes.
Good ol’ SOU 4501
This is one of my fav. scenes in one of my fav. movies. I just finished watching it in health class yesterday. Thank you, Mr. Schimp!!!!
This would so be me and three of my friends
What a beautiful and powerful looking loco! her whistle has a nice sound.
there's a scene in the iron giant where the tracks are sabotaged that movie also came out in 1999 and took place in 1957!!!
Both are wonderful films that also involve Sputnik, and share a song in common: "Searchin'" by The Coasters!
I love both films!
@@stephanielaurent3888 they also both show an object flying through the sky. And they both have a character that's trying to put an end to that object.
Speed in 1994 and October sky in 1999..The best 2 movies in the American history for me !
i got lucky and got to be in this movie..it was a blast!! i live in oliver springs tn where some of it was made..im the guy that said,,,hey rocket boy mars is that way.lol great movie!!!
imagine how stupid they looked to the train guy!!
I saw this about the time it came out during high school and was always wondering what the rail pulling was all about. I thought it had something to do with the actual building of their rocket. Come back and watch this clip later and find it was just a means to fund it off the scrap value!!
I remember seeing this in middle school and we all died laughing the second the first whistle blew
The realisation expressions are hilarious
It's weird how both October Sky and The Iron Giant came out in 1999 and they both featured scenes where a railroad was dismantled for its steel, but then the train comes and they try to put it back, but are unable to do so.
That Locomotive in the Clip is Southern Railway #4501
1:31 *Thomas the tank engine theme plays out of nowhere*
Lmao
1:18 "ODELL?"
1:58 (Train Whistle Blows)
watched this in physics on the last day, that was a good movie, the locomotive is Southern #4501 2-8-2 owned now by the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum
Johnny Cash is seen on the same locomotive in the video for Hurt.
I like the whistle
One of the best scenes in the movie. First time you see that, you're as scared of the crash as the boys are.
Love the engine & the whistle
Amazing whistle it’s a Norfolk & Western mikado
Actually its southern railway 4501 dressed as an N&W mike.
Love this scene its beautiful yet funny
I love the scene 😍 when the 3 boys are run, and then the train just goes toot toot toooooooooot
Kind of weird seeing SOU 4501 in West Virginia!
Actually the second time making a movie in WVa
I don't mean to burst anyone's bubble, but the movie was actually filmed in Tennessee. Despite this, I do give props to the film crew for painting the engine in a N&W scheme, which would be appropriate for WV. At the same time, however, N&W did not own any mikados (at least not to my knowledge). Also the cameo with O. Winston Link was a nice touch.
This is one of the best parts of the movie
This is my favorite scene in the whole movie, watched it in Study Skills class
I always come back every October
Its weird seeing the public library in my town being used in this movie:D
I remember watching this movie as a kid, but I never remembered the name of it. Kind of nostalgic.
October Sky 1999
Universal Home Entertainment American biographical-drama film 1999
0:48 so the spike you can fit in your hands is $8.20, but the rail that weights 400 lbs is only worth $1.65?
I saw this movie when I was in Lockport Township High School in Lockport, Illinois when I was a sophomore.
Good thing that track did have points and already had another part of the rails missing, since I was worried that the train was going to derail.
I love this movie!
I love this scene
1:54
I would have the same reaction as them, If I heard a train when the tracks were out.
I think the end of this scene was the best t-up for a montage evar
Southern 4501 Was built in 1911 by Baldwin locomotive works
Well, that should learn 'em...... That was actually a pretty good twist at the end, with a famous railfan doing a cameo role to boot.
This cracks me up everytime
Plot twist: Southern 4501 was a paid actor
That was a close call in the end.
The whistle sounds like a silent hill siren
Actually movie clips is a good channel and gives us the main main thriller part of different movies
1:59 BRUH 😂😂😂
O wow it’s 4501 disguised in a different whistle
Silverplanet207 yeah no kidding. It is obvious this was not an N&W locomotive
@@railsofthenorthland1181 They chose Southern Railway 4501 disguised as a different whistle and different railroad
@@almacuevas That’s literally what I said.
At 1:54 there is no junction just one track...at 2:02 it magically appears lol...neat scene tho with the Southern #4501 which was just recently restored and running
What kind of whistle did she wore in this scene?
My guess is that the track was hidden behind the bush at 1:54
nice
Vincent Berkan she was wearing a central of Georgia 6 chime whistle
while the boys were tearing up one end, the railroad was building a new junction off camera.
The engineers are lucky they switched tracks
Good ole 4501. I rode on that train a few days ago!
Winston o link was the engineer of course bill purdie was driving and got out of the way in time for the shots for the movie
1:58 train whistle
WHAT?! 4501? That's awesome! She's a good movie engine!
It is the southern 4501, I have seen it many times in person during the 90's at the town of Appalachia,Virginia Coal/railroad days, wearing her beautiful southern green paint job, it now belongs to the Tennessee Valley Railroad and has be repainted in blah.
@ThomasFan3751 You're correct. It is the late great O. Winston Link.
She's running this summer
know. this comment was 8 months ago. 4501 isn't running probly this year at all.
Christian Holbert Just fired up and passed test runs yesterday and today. ;)
Christian Holbert #4501 IS OPERATIONAL!
If a railroad spike is worth $8, why the hell are they bothering with a 400lb piece of track that’s worth $1.50?
FreeSorin He was joking about the $8 spike
Isn’t a ‘buck fifty’ slang for $150?
Frank Garrett if so that would make a lot more sense
He said it’s worth $8.20 per ton
Lol, my scrap yard would give a nice chunk of change for 400lbs
Southern Railway 4501..my favorite steam locomotive. Long live the Southern Railway.
Now it runs at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum
That was a great laugh.
This engine is still running in real life. However it dosen't have that whistle.
