I like the way you set up your camera angle and the lines of the background. Creates a slight dissonance, but not too much. I’ve been using the Audiotechnica ATR2100 mic for awhile. Can’t beat that mic really for the price. It’s excellent.
Appreciate you saying so. Redoing the whole studio, but that's the one section (behind me) that I've worked on. The rest however is awaiting new flooring, paint, and shelves/furniture... But the one you see now will be 1 of 3 places to film... Anyway, probably too much info there 😉
The ATR is such a beast of a microphone though. Glad you're enjoying it. I've got a couple of these as a back up just in case they stop manufacturing them... Probably one of the most underrated mics when you compare it to some of the Shure microphones.

I always try my best to recommend gear that you can use in multiple scenarios. Whether podcasting exclusively or doing a variety of video work, interviews, etc. all of these items should be able to serve your needs. What can I help you with?
You don’t need a Mac and in fact, having that audio interface puts you ahead a bit here. You can record directly into audacity (free) if you have a PC. If you have an iPad, you can connect the interface to that as well….did a video on that.
And as far as sound treating a room there are some options you can use with blankets. Now of course having a bit of control over your environment helps too whether that be kids, pets, busy street, etc.

Hey Kevin, thanks for this. Is there anyway to limit mic bleed on the zoom H6? We record with 3 dynamic mics resulting in a lot of post work in Audition
I did a video on cleaning up the audio, especially multiple voices... I use FCPX, but Audition should have the expander option, which is somewhat of a reverse compressor.

Amazing video! Very informational! A few questions that you might be able to help me out with:
1.) Can the Zoom H6 be powered via USB cable with a power bank or wall outlet?
2.) Can you record the audio from a facetime call into the Zoom h6? ( For example, I would have a good mic setup on my end but want to get good audio from my interviewee through a facetime call)
3.) Compare your mic vs the Rode Podmic. Podmic is only $100. Do you have any experience? I definitely don't think I need the Shure SM7B for starting out.

1. yes, it can be powered via the USB cable, just be mindful that if connected to your computer and you're running a call through it there can sometimes be a little interference when the ATR 2100 is also plugged into the computer (or any mic for that matter). But wall USB plug should be fine.
2. FaceTime should work, and I assume you're going through your computer? If going through an iPhone you can still do it via headphone out from the phone and into one of the Zoom inputs (1/8" to 1/4" TRS to TS cable).
3. I don't have experience with that mic, but the ATR having the ability to be plugged in via USB (so your remote guest can hear you on a computer), and directly plugged into the Zoom Via XLR at the same time is just awesome.
And although the SM7B is a great mic, you don't need it to start out. The ATR is plenty capable for a fraction of the cost.
@@KevinRossRN Very good points. Thank you for the info! I see that you really recommend the ATR and I haven't done enough research on that to know enough about it. Main mics that came up on my feed are the podmic and now the SM58. For only $100, it just makes sense. Regarding th eATR, it looks like it's sold out on amazon and other outlets which makes it out of the choices sadly. Maybe that means it's that good.
Could you explain a little more detail on how you would record the audio from a facetime call on an iphone into the zoom? Starting from the phone, would it be lightning to headphone adapter -> TRRS cable -> ? 3.5mm to XLR adapter? I have on from Rode already if that helps
So the Samson is a similar setup as the ATR: amzn.to/2xLGYbe (this one has the mic stand included), but you can get it without.
So the Zoom H4N, H5, and H6 has the ability to accept a 1/4" TRS or TS cable. The inputs are both XLR and TRS/TS (stereo or mono jack) compatible.
So, lightening from iPhone to 3.5mm TRS (TRRS would likely cause a loopback situation where the caller would hear themselves)...So, 3.5mm TRS to 1/4" TS into the Zoom. This is the exact one I have: amzn.to/3aUhM0I
You only need the one 1/4" end, the other just "hangs out" not in use. And, here's a single mono cable: amzn.to/2wiDm08
You just want to make sure that it's a mono (TS) connection going into the Zoom.
The Handheld actually does the work here. So basically if the phone is connected into the Zoom, your caller is hearing everything you're saying through the mic that's connected to the Zoom, and vice versa...it's an interface.
Now, you could also try a software only solution like Zencastr...There's a free version. I personally prefer the hardware option, but that's just me, however people are also getting great results with software. I just like having more control over the built-in gain, compressor, and limiter functions of the handheld. But start where your budget allows you.

So, I can't remember if you saw this video, it may have been the one you originally commented on: czcams.com/video/02rJZ-iwxkI/video.html I have to go through a lot of comments as I do try to respond to everyone.
Anyway, yes, very easy. ATR2100 via USB into the computer, ATR XLR plugged into track 1 of the H5. A cable like this 1/8" TRS to 1/4" TS (mono) out from the headphone jack of the computer and into track 2 of the Zoom. And then sync that audio up with your video...there's always a post production process if you want clean audio, which clean audio does take priority over the video...and this is actually coming from me as a filmmaker 😉

I do have a question.
What if I wanted to use my Zoom H6 in the truck (I know all about safety, let's say, this is a hypothetical question) while driving and using the ATR 2100 isn't an option, due to it's size. Is there a lavalier (with or without an XLR connection) that would pair well with the Zoom H6? Or even better, is there a headset (gamer or not), that would have a good quality microphone on it, that would pair well with the Zoom H6 again?

I would say my budget would easily be around the $100 USD mark, give or take a little.
So for the budget, the original headset recommendation would likely be out...However a lav could potentially be your answer here. Now, I'm always recommending products that have the ability to be used in a variety of ways, but feel free to do some additional research.
I'd recommend something like the Deity Lav here: amzn.to/39Sf5Me
A couple of reasons is that this is a setup that you can adapt for other uses, as stated above, but more specifically if you decide to add a wireless mic pack, or need to adapt this to an XLR connection, the Deity line up has most if not all of what you'd need to grow. Not to mention they're pretty active on social, they stand behind their products, and they are really making gear that is going up against the likes of Rode and Sennheiser.
The way it comes you could plug this into the 3.5mm input of the Zoom's X/Y mic attachment, or just get a 3.5mm to 1/8 in adapter. Feel free to dig a little deeper on the Deity if you'd like and by all means let me know what you think.

Great and informative video, Kevin!! Enjoying them all. At timestamp 10:13, how do you have the H6 attached to the tripod? Also, I have started using my H6 as an audio interface on my Macbook. So far, I am getting so much static with the Shure SM57 during Zoom calls and the audio is unusable. Any thoughts?
Glad the videos are helping. Could you just double check the timestamp because 10:13 is at the end of the video and I just want to make sure I answer appropriately. Is it the small "handheld" tripod you're referring to or when I have it up on the main setup during filming?
And, also glad to hear you using it as an interface. That's something I really need to share. I use it for multiple Zoom calls a day. As far as the interference, have you tried it with any other platform other than Zoom? Like Skype? Also, what about your cellphone? Is this near your setup? I'm wondering if that might be causing some interference? Also, anything else plugged into the computer via USB? Also, what about your room setup as far as anything else in there that could be causing issues, any other technology in there?

Yes, EVERYTHING is plugged into my laptop...hahahaha. I have a monitor attached and a few hard drives that aren't plugged into the computer, but attached to the usb hub. And yes, my cellphone is nearby. I had to redo an interview because the audio sounded choppy. I will unplug everything from now on.
I only tested it on Zoom so far. I will test with others just to see. I tried recording something in Garageband and I did NOT hear any static on the test.

As far as the interference sometimes it's just a process of elimination... Phones for sure can have a big impact. I had that same issue before when using Zoom, and I ended up just putting it on a chair away from me. That worked. It was interfering with an overhead shotgun mic that's very well made 🤷♂️, but I've never had that issue with my ATR, which would be considered a budget option.
Also, sometimes the XLR cable can be the culprit. A lot of the cables that come with mics are aluminum based, which doesn't provide the best shielding like copper does.
Certainly try to experiment first before spending money on a cable. I'll be curious to hear if you find a fix, but you're certainly not alone in this one.

The cable is a brand new Kopul 4000 Series. I will be experimenting as you suggested so I can prepare to start my podcast, and may have to use Zoom, Skype, etc. and will need to record phone calls.

You can still record, but it just wouldn’t be live. Are you trying to go live, or just pre-record and upload later?

I don't record live, but what I want to do is interview people at an upcoming event but the area doesn't have great phone reception. My concern is some apps rely on internet connectivity so looking for alternative methods. Currently I record directly into zenastr both video & audio, then edit in iMovie. Trying to get my head around how I will do this on location if connectivity is poor.

You can certainly record the audio and video with the native camera app. Or use a third party camera app, like the one from Moment or FilmicPro.
What kind of mics are you using?
@@KevinRossRN I've actually been recording through my MacBook Pro. I was planning to hotspot it to my phone, but in the reception insufficient I was investigating alternatives.
My budget is extremely limited (have only recently become a single mum) which is also why I'm using my teenagers low budget gaming mic, which has worked really well for my solocasts. We bought a second mic when I did my first interview but discovered we couldn't connect the two mics as they registered as the same mic. In the end we had the one mic between us & I just spent more time editing the audio to balance out the sound because my voice carried a lot more than my guests.
When you say native camera app do you mean Photo Booth?
I'm looking at getting condenser mics as this event will be semi-outdoors... I'm an artisan and will have a market stall at a festival and I've asked the festival if I can use my market stall as a pop up podcasting studio, I will have 3 gazebo walls up so the sound will be partially protected, from the wind & festival activities.
But from the research I've done the reputable starting mics are out of my budget right now, so I'm trying to be as resourceful as possible working within my current constraints.
@@KevinRossRN I just answered my own question by taking my notebook out into the paddock, connected the mic & turned off wifi, and recorded a clip with photo booth. Will play around with that a little more.
I really do look forward to having the budget to invest in better equipment but for now I am having fun learning through the old mantra of "starting where I am, using what I've got, doing what I can"

So, do you record in stereo format or mono? I guess I just don’t see the clear benefits of recording stereo. Can anyone explain that? Thanks!
Mono. When mixed it's still in both speakers, but the voice is still coming out of both speakers equally vs. hearing or noticing a voice that seems to be panning or fading left or right (in stereo), especially if the voice is simultaneously mixed in two channels. The file sizes are also smaller once mixed.
Some of the podcast stories that have multiple characters, sounds, music and transitions may record in stereo, but that's because it's giving you that more immersive experience as if you're listening to a movie or television show.

If you mean the Samson Q2U, they're practically identical. It's the mic I recommend when folks can't get the ATR.
