I used to run a care home. We had a couple who had been each other's first love. They were separated by her parents moving out of the country. They met again in our care home, both in their mid 80's, and fell in love again. It was a beautiful thing to see. They had three beautiful years together before the man passed away. She followed him soon after. Old people feel things deeply. Their gentle caring for each other's needs and joyous laughter was wonderful to observe.

I worked in a home with several women with Alzheimer’s. Joy began looking for her husband, who she believed was out at the car, bringing in their luggage. She thought she was at a hotel every evening. She would grow very anxious, cry for a few minutes, then go to bed. She kept old photos on her dresser- one was a black and white photograph with her on a camel, the pyramids in the background. We forget what interesting, incredible lives these individuals might have had.

That's how it was with my late husband. He was the love of my life, and every day our hearts lifted when we glimpsed each other. Several times a day, because of sheer joy and not out of habit, we would stop, touch or hug or kiss, look into one another's eyes and ask, "Have I told you today how much I love you?" It was a daily, hourly miracle to have one another, and my heart will break over and over until the moment when our spirits are again united - this time, forever.

I had to get to the end of the movie to realize the significance of her introducing herself simply as Ruth. This one tugs at the heartstrings. After the movie was over, I was thinking about it and remembered when Arthur asked her about her husband, she said that he had been her best friend. That’s when I started to cry. It also was wonderful to see the playbill was of the Mousetrap. That is the only way he could’ve played a police detective for 30 years, since the Mousetrap is the longest running play ever in Great Britain.

My dad was loyal to my grumpy, mentally ill mother for 60 years, until she passed away. He then, at age 82, met the love of his life. She, too, had spent decades loyally caring for an ill and difficult man, up until his death. I don't know how quickly they fell in love--I live across the country--but when I came for a visit and met her, the two of them were clearly infatuated. They constantly held hands, and kissed, and took every opportunity to cuddle together. It was such a sweet love story--they had two years of married bliss together before Dad passed away at age 85. That's where I thought this story was going, and I thought--how sweet. In the short, discovering that HE was the love of her life too was quite a gut punch--the big reveal really got me in the feels

Such a powerful and poignant film. Eloquent performances by both actors. My husband died 9 1/2 years ago at the young age of 50. I thought we would grow old together, but that was not to be. Soon after his death, I had this vivid dream that he really hadn't died, he had just been away and we ran into each other's arms, like you see in the movies. Our love ran deep, even though we had only been together 12 years. We were best friends. I longed for him so much and could not grasp that he was physically not with me anymore. If we had grow old together, I know we would have taken care of one another, hand in hand, heart to heart. Even if we could not rememer the other's face, our love would remember. I remember Scott. I remember. Thank you for being mine. 😘

After my Mother's passing, my nieces and I were cleaning out her apartment and I met one of my Mother's neighbors. A woman in her mid 30's that talked about her Grandparents and how wonderful they were. It was not until her Grandfather passed away that she learned that this man she loved so much was not her biological Grandfather. In fact, her Grandmother and this wonderful man had never legally married, The Grandmother had divorced the father of her children shortly after the youngest was born and he was never heard from again and apparently never even mentioned.
A few months after the Grandfather had passed, the Grandmother went to an assisted living facility to live. It was her first day and she went to the cafeteria for dinner. Even after all these years the elderly lady immediately recognized the man sitting at another table as the man she had divorced so many decades before. If the old man had any question about the newcomer's identity, he was quickly enlightened.
After cleaning up not only the dining area, but several innocent bystanders that had become collateral damage from the food fight that ensued between the Exes, the staff decided that these two residences should not dine at the same time.

She doesn't regret helping him re-enact that moment of love at first sight over and over again, but she still grieves for the whole marriage she has lost now, for good, and every day that grief is made raw again as she celebrates first love with her husband, trying to live in the moment with him.

@@certiPHIer Christina, I see Ruth's lot quite differently from the way you see it.
"for Ruth, it is like her husband has died"
I think he is still very much alive for her.
After all, we all only live one day at at time--really, one moment at at time--regardless. And that is what she is doing.
"he remembers none of the good years they shared."
The wonder, the beauty, the magic of their love may be enriched by carrying the treasured memories of the past, but its essence and its lifeblood is every moment -- love is a present-tense thing. It is just as real, just as vibrant, just as dynamic and transcendent in their "first day" together as it ever has been.
"she still grieves for the whole marriage she has lost now"
She hasn't lost it. He has. She still carries that treasure, and it still enriches her life and her heart. There is a bittersweetness in holding the memories alone, but those memories are still treasures.
Meanwhile, he has a glorious, uplifting present--every day.
"every day that grief is made raw again as she celebrates first love with her husband, trying to live in the moment with him."
I would say that every day the joy of their love is made fresh again as she celebrates first love with her husband, living in the moment with him.
I think your own final words summarize everything I am trying to convey: She is living in the moment with him. A present moment that is joyous for them both.

This is a truly beautiful love story, wonderfully written and portrayed! The scene of the new employee, cleaning all of the dentures, is what my dearly departed mother did, when she was in nurses training! Rest in Peace, Lodemia. 1920-2000🙏💗🙏

I still remember when l was in Jr. High, l made 'Nosegays' with Backyard Flowers, than had my Mom drive me and 2 of my Friends to a Nursing Home to pass them out...l was so Sweet! 💕

This had me at JOHN HURT but then got even better. There is Alzheimer's in my family and people may forget a lot....but they don't forget a love. And yes, love at first sight exists. It's a soul recognition thing.

This was beautifully unexpected. I loved every bit of it, especially "99..." fully expecting to hear 100. Laughed way to hard at hearing "98.." 💗

Profoundly moving, insightful and the great late John hurt lead superb ensemble in this beautiful little film. After working in NHS, and care homes shines a light on often forgotten people, and the cruel nature of Alzheimer's, dementia .
