    Being native speaker I struggled with R and Ř as a kid as many fellow Czechs do.
    I even had to go to regular consultations with logopedics specialist who gave me exercises for daily practise that eventually helped me to learn pronounce R and Ř correctly.
    Thank God for these and thanks to my parrents who were responsible enough to sign me up for the consultations back then.
    I even remember some of the exercises to this day! :)

      Hi Kib!
      I think this is one of the top comments I've got on my channel! :))) From what you are writing, there is a bigger issue. Since you are a native German speaker it's of course a bit bigger challenge for you to start saying R well as the German R is created in a completely different way in a completely different part of the mouth.
      Have you tried consistent practice, like every day for let's say 5min? And even faster and more efficient way would be to visit a logoped once. They can really well distinguish what's the issue in your speech and direct you to a better practice. Let me know, how it went.

    I'm from Scotland, we roll our R's normally. It's the English, Americans, Australians, Irish that can't, won't. Ř isn't a problem, it's some of the long words and the grammar that throws me. Also, the long vowels, totally unnecessary I think. 😎

      Long vowels are not the core i agree, I just don’t agree it’s unnecessary ;) in some cases it changes the meaning completely... plus it makes the language sound prettier. :)

    Great video 👍 I'm natively English speaking, and I probably don't have trouble with rolled Rs because I've studied Spanish. When I first tried Czech, I noticed Ř was tricky. More recently I read something which seemed to click for me, and I now think of Ř as "rzh" ("zh" representing the soft J sound used in French, but here, made with the tongue behind the teeth as when saying a rolled R) and it seemed to come out sounding good! I need a true Czech to confirm if it sounds right, but your video has so many useful tips :)

    I have been learning Czech for a while and already knew some of the information. I wish I had access to these many months ago 😅 i wanted to ask if you have any ideas on how I can improve my comprehension. I live in Olomouc and the people here tend to speak a little fast for me. And I don't mind to ask them to slow down. But I would love it if you have any ideas that might help.

    • @CzechWithKaterina
      @CzechWithKaterina  Před 3 lety +5

      Ahoj Camerone! Dobrá otázka!
      I will try to answer with as many resources and I ideas as there are just like that on my mind. :)
      1) Try to listen with a text. Find books with audio that you like, find videos with subtitles.
      2) Listen to videos you already know in your language second time in Czech (best again with the subtitles). I pretty much learnt English just by watching Friends first in Czech and then in English. I love this show! And I recommend it 100% as the language there is very much oriented on authentic daily situations that you will come across very often.
      3) Set up (maybe an online skype call) meeting with a native just for a chat about some specific topics that you prepare your vocabulary for. And find a person that doesn't mind repeating and letting you to jot down the vocabs that are hard for you to understand. Believe me, the vocabulary will repeat all the time.
      4) Start singing Czech songs. Try to read and translate Czech music. Best are the interprets that have for instance just a guitar i nthe background so you can hear better. First you will need to read the lyrics just on it's own. But when you listen again to the song, it will pay off. In the songs the language is sometimes very authentic and it will help the daily comprehension. To recommend some names of the interprets and even songs: Pokáč (Mám doma kočku), Chinaski (Víno), Jaromír Nohavica (album - Tři čuníci), Karel Kryl
      5) Listening practice with written down exercises - they are a lot of work but they work like magic. They are often ver authentic and their advantage is that you can always pick your level so they are not too easy or too hard.
      These are just on the top of my head. Anybody have more ideas? Maybe some personal experience?

    French native speaker here.
    I have no problems rolling the R like in Czech, Russian, Polish, Spanish, etc... even though our standard French R is pronounced differentely.
    However, concerning the Czech Ř which is supposed to be a combination of R + Š/Ž in one sound, each time I hear words with Ř on Czech radio or Czech television, I can barely hear the trilled R sound preceeding the Š or Ž sound.
    For exemple, the Czech word for "good" /dobře/ sounds almost exactly like the Polish word for "good" /dobrze/ to me.

    • @CzechWithKaterina
      @CzechWithKaterina  Před 2 lety +3

      Hey! The sound R in the Ř doesnt preseed the Š or Ž sound. R+Ž/Š is kind of merged together and creates a completely new sound: Ř. With a bit of practice with this video (there are more around YT as well), it’s possible to master.

      to je moc krásný komentář! Cvičení na nácvik hlásky R, která ve videu jsou, jsou logopedické techniky, které když budeš trénovat, jistě se R naučíš velmi dobře. Pokud bys měla pocit, že k nim musíš přidat ještě nějaké další techniky, možná najdeš ještě další rady v jiných videích na CZcams, ale já sama jsem si dělala přehled všech různých logopedických pomůcek, popsaných ve fonetických příručkách, a tyto vycházely jako nejúčinnější. Takže věřím, že to určitě zvládneš. Zkoušej si to každý den a za pár týdnů budeš mít krásné RRRRR :)

I've been practising this for months now and I'm still struggling a lot- sometimes I'll get it right, and I've noticed this tends to be after a consonant such as T or D, or if it's in the middle of a word. I'm trying to practice so that A) I can hold my R for a long time like I can in French and B) I want to stop being so breathy when i say it- it always sounds like I'm saying errrr or arrrrr.
