Why EVERY Car Guy Needs a 90's 4X4!

  • Today Wooley ventures off into the woods for the first time in his 1995 Nissan Pathfinder since he got it on trade for two DSM Eclipse shells. This sparked the conversation about how all car guys need some type of 90's 4x4 in order to get out and explore what can't be seen on a day to day basis.

    I hardcore think the same about 90s Japanese cars. Especially about the 90s terrano (pathfinder) I'm about to straight swap my mazdaspeed 3 axela for lol. Always loved the nissan terrano since I was a boy

    First off, sweet pathy but you should know that it's not a d21, it's a wd21. Like how the frontier is a d22 and the first generation xterra was the wd22. Second, six cylinder or four? I have a 93 that I absolutely adore and I'll never get rid of it unless it's totally smashed and I found another. Best lift option for these is the calmini system that corrects the steering angle and the center link from grassroots. Engine upgrades are fairly readily available since the vg30e was in a lot of cars including the z series of the same years (and apparently some Ford escorts?). Nismo has some sweet stage 2 offroad cams. The stock Nissan lockers are sweet and I think Warn makes some that fit too. Mine has auto lockers right now because the manual hubs I scored at a salvage yard turned out to be the wrong spline count. The bumper is a problem, you have to either go custom or modify one from a jeep Cherokee. I got a roof rack off an xterra and cut it down to fit my roof. The best upgrade I've added so far is a vg33e out of a 2000 frontier, and headers. One great thing about the pathfinder is that the SE model had 31s factory on stock suspension, which is bigger than the competition from jeep, Ford, and Toyota. Interesting side note: if you have any vehicle with a vg engine you can carbuerate it. If you go to the NPORA forums you can find tons of useful information about this and other Nissan vehicles including the write ups I used to fit my engine and roof rack, as well as a few great write ups on what bumper to look for and how to modify it to fit the pathfinder. I am always looking for more footage of these wd21s so I'll be watching for another one from you guys! I love these trucks!

      @@S3Magazine I do, ever since I found a rust free pathfinder in Arizona for a grand, drove it through a blizzard on the way home to Arkansas with a cracked cylinder head, and fixed it up myself for a few hundred bucks worth of new cylinder head and gaskets, and drove it for three years through all kinds of crazy situations including almost getting swept away in a flood trying to pick up a prom dress for my sister and untold dirt roads of various quality before having to do anything else serious to it. When I first got it I thought there were no upgrade options based on searching jeep oriented sites, but once you get down into technical applications you realize that some of the z series engine upgrades are compatible, some of the hardbody suspension upgrades are compatible, and some companies do make stuff for these but they can be hard to find. And apparently the factory front skid plates off the first generation xterra bolts right on to one of these. Then again there are a few old rally videos of stock pathys that are quite impressive in my opinion. Everyone I know that used to have one of these regrets getting rid of it.

    Back in the 90s (when cell phones were analog and the size of a kids Spiderman lunchbox) I had a "hardbody" 4x4 extended cab p/u. Really liked it for everything except slippery mud. It was just too light weight to get itself out of any of the deep stuff without a winch or a friend. IMHO one of the best looking truck body designs in automotive history too.
    Now that I think of it I put a bumper sticker on the rear glass:" Impeach Clinton (second line) and her husband too". I got a lot of both fist pumps, horn honks and middle fingers out of that move.

    Edit: the rig looks really cool. It’s one of the best looking I have seen as far as cool graphics on the paint and wheel tire lift choices. That was a hard hill in the mud you really have to abuse it to get up that. On the dry would be more of a legit test of the rig IMO. Either way have fun and keep on wheelin!

      Before I blew my old engine, presumably related to the fact that a damn rat had chewed through my knock sensor harness, and had to spend the last year or so learning my way through a full engine rebuild, I would have random people at gas stations or stoplights or parking lots either telling me they wished they had never sold theirs, asking if I'd bought it off their friend's cousin, or trying to get me to sell it to them twice a week on average.

      My issue with my 90 on 33s is def power. But only hill climbing. She rips doughnuts and goes through mud like nothing lol. And nobody will say this but its amazing on fuel mileage. Way better than a chev vortex half ton, better than my 77 chev shorty 400 and I hate to say it but on the exact same tires its more capable. Fun fact, you can swap tires between the two. Same bolt pattern. Just the chev took them stock for the most part and the Nissan took some grinding and a 3" bodylift haha rip to a totally clean pathy i didn't know haha was a 500$ drunk buy

    • @revwroth3698
      @revwroth3698 Před 4 lety +2

      Unnecessary. The stock rear axle is closer to the dana 60 than the 40, and the ring gear is 9.25" which is obviously better than the Ford nine inch. The dana 60s would be a bit of an upgrade, but unless you drop a v8 (which you'll probably need to have any torque on 40s) in it and have it armor plated or modified for jumping the stock axle is more than you need anyways. If I remember correctly I've heard of people running upwards of five hundred horses through the stock drive train without problems, and unless you seriously modify the pathfinder it's about a hundred and fifty horsepower. I think mine is close to two fifty, maaaybe three hundred, with the vg33e, taller cams, headers, and an electronic radiator fan. I don't know anyone with a dyno around here though, so I can't be completely sure about that number.
