My development vehicle was a metallic red and the front grill and bumper was different to your new Pathfinder but the rear end was the same. A lovely vehicle then and I bet now as well.

I have a 1994, five speed, 4x4, and before I bough it 18 months ago it had lived a very long and full life with the odometer frozen at 242,576 miles. After rebuilding the entire front suspension (every piece was OEM) I've been wailing on it offroad as often as I can. The four-link in the rear is superb and sets it apart from the XJ Cherokees which ride on rear leafs. Many of these trucks came with factory LSD rear ends, and with a 9.17" ring gear they dwarf the puny Dana 35 of the XJ and 8" in the Toyota. The factory suspension is smooth on and off road and it rides better than any truck I've driven. The weak point is undoubtedly the front IFS and steering. Compared to the Toyota, you get far less travel and lift is limited to around 3" in the front until you're riding on the bump stops. The steering centerlink and idler arm and also known weak points (I replace tie rods every few months). Grab some rear lift coils ($100 from 4x4parts.com) and a steering stabilizer and hit the trails.

Hey TFL. I have had 2 of those first gen Pathfinders in the past. One was a 2-door 1988 and the other was a 4-door 1993; both the SE-V6 version. Please consider doing the following immediately on that Pathfinder. 1) Replace the timing belt on that vehicle immediately as most versions have an interference engine. 2) Replace the transmission fluid immediately as the automatic transmission was a weak point on that vehicle and very iffy; The manual transmissions were fine. 3) Replace the Tie-Rod ends as they tend to snap like twigs. It's best to always have a spare set handy. Good luck and cant wait to see it on the trails.

Still proud original owner of 1989 XE Pathy. Manual transmission. Never left me on side of road broken down. Like all Nissans salt plays he’ll on metal work. I had undercoating installed as option to protect against these New York winters and salted roads. Problems: rear floor boards are weak spots for rust.
Have done regular oil changes every 3 thousand miles. Put 3 timing belts on it. Slave cylinder for brakes. Several exhaust through Midas but parts have lifetime warranty so paid only for labor. Drive belts changed. Rear rotors replaced. Front tie rods replaced. Starter and relay changed out. Went through 3 batteries and 3 sets of tires. She’s been an excellent car. 213000 miles on her.
Wish Nissan would do retro design on these like Challenger or Bronco.

Fun fact: All the early Pathfinders were 2 doors and once the gov't decided they were trucks, they raised the import duties through the roof. So they made them "station wagons". Problem solved. I eventually junked it with 325 thousand miles and no part of the drivetrain ever failed or was taken apart. It did, however, fail safety inspection every year due to steadily advancing rust. I'm driving a Titan now.

My first car was a 1988 Pathfinder SE with a factory front brush guard and a rear spoiler. I beat the piss out of it and it never broke on me. Midwest salt is what killed it. I still think the components in the rear ceiling is so unique. Add the rear spoiler and block type rims of the SE to your XE with some 32s!

From people who own them, the Isuzu VehiCross was great on the trails. I've only seen 2 in my travels and both were claimed to be monsters off road. I owned a '91 Trooper ll and a 2001 Trooper, and the '91 was very capable, and almost made it to 300k, the 2001 was a p.o.s. w the most problematic transmission issues.

My parents bought a new one in 1994, the year after I graduated high school. They knew what I would have done to it. It got passed down to my sister and lasted about 12 years and 250k. My dad and I bought some land together and drove that thing all over it and he pulled my '95 F150 out of the mud a few times. I sold the truck and bought a '74 Bronco so he didn't get to pull me out any more!
Now I drive an 06 Xterra and live in Gold Hill, I think it took over for the original Pathfinder when it became civilized. I'd love to do a comparison of abilities.. There is a nice black 90s pathfinder just down the road from me.

100% ready to see where this goes! After 3 years patiently searching for a WD21 or gen 1-2.5 Montero, I finally found a worthy 94 Pathfinder SE-V6 in the fall. Manual, 4wd, off road sport package, and surprisingly factory keyless entry. Still even had the sunroof shade. It had come from Colorado Springs to the East Coast 2 years ago when the second owner retired and moved to be close to his wife’s family. Only really used it to pull his Harleys and ended up selling it because he was getting too old to drive a manual and needed a pickup for his hobbies. One of my favorite things is that you can remove the front headrests and fold the seat back flush with rear seats to create a lounge chair setup. Could you guys maybe go into a bit of detail with the LSD? WD21s had H233B 31 spline LSDs with ~200lb.ft breakaway while later gens got 33 spline and only had ~40lb.ft breakaway and I would love to understand that more especially vs a rear locker.

Finally! Ever since that dihatsu I’ve been thinking you need to get one of these. I loved my 89 two door. Find the “lego” wheels and 31 inch tires from the SE trim on that thing and it will go anywhere with that LSD. 31s on this will require a bit of tweaking on the torsion bars up front I think, but still would be a stock configuration.
Also while it was based on the hardbody truck, the truck essentially had a 2 inch (I think) body lift that the Pathfinder does not.
Check the bushings on the lower control arm rods too! Common trouble area. I forget what they’re actually called, but they’re outboard from, and much shorter than the torsion bars.

  • @jerroldshelton9367

I had an '87 Pathfinder 2DR. It was the color of this one. It had 31" BFG ATs on stock alloy wheels, originally had in-cab adjustable shocks that the prior owner replaced with Rancho RS 5000's, and had the factory rear limited slip with the little orange sticker on the pumpkin that the one in the video displays. Mine was throttle-body injected, rated at 150 hp, connected to a JATCO 3 speed auto......
And, therin lies the only problem I had with it.
I bought this from the owner of a Nissan dealership out in California, who had owned it since new and immaculately maintained it. It had a freshly overhauled engine with about 4,000 miles on it and 247,000 miles on the odometer. It drove and, for the most part also looked, like a brand-new vehicle.
It did that, that is, until the JATCO 3 speed puked second gear after I had racked up 30,000 miles of my own on the thing.
No transmission shop in my area would touch it. My late friend's Nissan store couldn't fix it, either. I forget what the "NLA" part needed was, but it was less than $10.00. They tracked one down in Mexico City, where a warehouse showed one of this no longer available part in inventory, but they apparently didn't really have the part, either.
I really, really, really liked that Pathfinder. The whole inability to make it function correctly and un-puke the missing in action second gear was heartbreaking. I would still be driving the thing now if I could have repaired it.
It wasn't perfect, mind you. Forward visibility was good out of it, but sightlines everywhere else made it hard for me to see out of. That's the only real complaint I had with it aside from a desperate need for an overdrive gear if I cared about going faster than 65 mph on the road......
But otherwise, it was a very enjoyable vehicle to live with.
it was very comfortable on the highway and easily the best-handling four-wheel drive, on pavement, that I have owned. Off-road, it is one of the few torsion-bar IFS four-wheel drives that didn't have me missing the live front drive axle it didn't have. It ATE UP Forest Service and BLM fire roads alive, being very comfortable with no buzzing or rattling on "washboard surfaces" and on the typical low-range "Jeep trail" on public land, it was composed and didn't beat one to death. Lots of space behind the back seat for cargo..... A roof-rack for more.... A factory option tow package so I could pull my M-416 trailer behind... It was, simply put, an awesome machine for extended family fly fishing / quail hunting/ ghost town exploring/ bush camping adventures.
Faced with not being able to get the transmission put right, when a random guy offered me $4,000.00 for it even though I told him about the transmission issue, I sold it.
He took it home to Mexico, where it got a Chevy engine, transmission, and transfer case. He still has it.
To add more depression to this tale of woe, about a week after I sold it, I saw an advertisement from a "Z Car" specialty shop proclaiming they were making the part I needed to have my transmission overhauled.
I use a 2004 Xterra now and while it doesn't have quite the same sport-car driving feel on pavement, it's just as good in the dirt as my Pathfinder was, and better in the sense that I can actually see out of the thing. Until I got the Xterra, I often found myself wishing I could have fixed that Pathfinder and kept it.

@@rickreese5794 If I would have had access to metal fab equipment as I once did prior to my Pathfinder puking its tranny's second gear, I'd have been very tempted to stuff a 4.3 Vortec under it's hood, along with a GM transmission, and an Atlas II T-case.
The VG30, while not especially powerful by modern standards, revved with Swiss-watch smoothness and it is a good, decently-reliable engine, IMHO.
It was powerful enough to get my Pathfinder up Cajon Pass on I-15 at 65 mph, when loaded with family and gear. Good enough for me....
For me, a GM drivetrain conversion in that thing wouldn't have been about power, but "serviceability" or the ability find parts to replace worn out or broken ones, more than anything else.

OK, this particular OG Pathfinder was known from our Nissan importer at the dealer I worked for (1986-2008) as the PWAX or an XE-level 4x4 w/a 4-speed automatic tranny in "Champagne" (gold / beige) color. Our best seller at the time was the same level, but as a 4x2 (PW2AX) in the same color.
About the engine, the VG30DE (same as the OG 300ZX, but a bit detuned) NA-3.0L V6 only got 153hp and 180 lb-ft, roughly comparable with more modern regular cab and King Cab D40 Frontiers with the 2.4L I4.
That's a CLEAN EXAMPLE you don't find that often.
