I greatly appreciate that your Top 10 lists aren't a strictly ordered ranking from least to most, but rather each spot contains a separate sub-category or slightly different take on the overall topic. These sorts of things are almost always subjective, and so it is much more interesting for me to hear "these are ten of our favorite examples of X, and here's why we like each of them."
Agree
Totally agree!
Yet people still ask, where is this where is that, even though it's the same category.
I enjoy that as well
We do? I've never seen nor heard of a movie with a giant riverboat in German
Props to whoever made these
Your comment is one of my top 10 favorite props.
Nice meme Get out.
Oh god... I read that, moved on, then it hit me like a bar of soap in a sock to the back of the head.
That was bad, and you should feel bad.
"props" lol. nice one
Nice meme fuck you
Should've had The Dudes rug from The Big Lebowski, it really tied that movie together.
LMFAO
That's like, your opinion, man!
😂
I can't stop laughing about this comment.
Or, a white Russian...
I almost cried when Wilson drifted away, just out of reach.
It's all right, she was waiting for him at home when he got there. Rita, Rita Wilson.
well I DID cry lol. So subtle also because that's really the first time we get a music score to back the scene. Until then it's just the visuals, but that Wilson separation scene brings on the score and it's tissues all around.
To me that scene equals to the Terminator going down into the melted steel in T-2. So, it's okay to cry.
Fun fact: on imdb you can rate movies between 1 and 10 with one exception... This is Spinal Tap can be rated up to 11!
wanted to give you a thumbs up but you're at 11!
I just checked. That's hilarious!
I actually had a Marshall bass amp that... went to eleven. Very fun.
that in of itself is rather awesome
It only went to ten
"Your father wanted you to have this, when you were old enough...or I assume that's what he intended. I'm not sure, he was screaming at me as I left him mangled and burning on the edge of that volcano"
ok, i laughed out loud at that.
Selective memory. He didnt need all that xtra baggage. Here this is your dads is good enuff. For me.
Here's a fun mental picture. Combine Obi-Wan giving Luke his father's lightsaber with Christopher Walken giving the kid his father's watch. The cringe--worthy lines write themselves.
he was kind of incoherent at the time and writhing about what with all that smoldering flesh falling off what remained of his body mangled and all...really nasty to have been there..took years of therapy for me to get over that one even with the Force(tm) ...a bit of drinking fermented blue milk you know... some of it is a blur...a bit of gambling..never trust a Hutt by the way if he is dealing the cards or rolling the dice..and never dance in front of them either...and have you ever noticed that Hutts never wear pants or robes? ....well guess we need to get going now...your aunt and uncle are probably saying hello to the local Stormtroopers by now looking for those droids your uncle got form the freaky little guys in the big sand crawler thingy...and i doubt the meeting is going to go at all well with them...at least that's what happens in the script if you read ahead a few pages...
"Your father wanted you to have this when you were old enough...it your fathers Light Saber. It is a very important prop, you must not loose it. You will need it for the next three films, and maybe longer."
That pause before he says "These go to eleven" lmao. That is one thing that will always make me laugh hysterically without fail.
Actually the animated series Reboot paid tribute to Spinal Tap in the episode Talent Night. Just after the series vilian Megabyte crashes the party and jams out some riffs from his BC Rich Warlock, he then cranks the control on the guitar to 11, just before our hero Bob drops in and whips out his own guitar and an epic shred off insues.
Absolutely LOVE that you included Miller's Crossing's hat in with the likes of A Christmas Story's leg and Forrest Gump's box of chocolates.
Daniel Radcliffe in Swiss Army Man
Cameron Bruce I actually thought he would be on here.
Cameron Bruce YES!
Great idea for a separate best 10 of.
Although I m not sure what of, comedic farting dead props ?
Thanks for reminding me. On to ebay to get a copy!
Cinefix could make a "Top Ten Shits Of All Time" and I'd watch it religiously
Do you remember a comment a while back?, a comment joking about making a list of the "Top 10 moments of silence in movies", and Cinefix actually making such list, well I do, and your comment reminds me of that.
Me too
In no particular order:
- The laxative scene from Dumb & Dumber
- The British girls from Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle
- Randy entering the bathroom/smashcut to red cabbage in a pot from A Christmas Story
- Vincent's final deuce from Pulp Fiction
- The candy bar from Caddyshack (with a nod to the non-candy bar from The To-Do List)
- "Shiiiiiiiit" from Back to the Future (and sequels)
- The pie from The Help
- Robin Hood's peasant disguise in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
Didn't make the cut:
- "Who Is Number 2 Working For?" - Austin Powers. Tom Arnold ruins the scene.
- Jar Jar stepping in it in Phantom Menace. Really, the worst moment for the worst character.
Now my nostrils are tingling
Toilet bomb from Lethal Weapon 2? think it was number 2 :p
I spoke with Edward James Olmos at a convention, and he said he was in a background shot, and had no idea why he was there to begin with (When Dekkard comes in to Bryant's office to be given the 'job' to retire replicants.
James said he did not want to attract attention to himself sitting too still, and did not want to distract attention with too much movement, so got a small piece of paper and started making the first origami piece (the chicken), not knowing anything about origami.
Then Ridley Scott noticed, James explained what he was doing, and said it was brilliant,
and yelled get a camera, shoot the chicken...
then one of the coolest movie-plot-prop themes was placed in a movie.
He also said his final line was something he came up with thinking that it did not seem right to just walk away. His character would have had something to say, and tried "it's too bad she won't live, but then again, who does"...
Just some Blade Runner FYI.
I always thought it was the other way around. Without the scene of Deckard's dream, Gaff was already making unicorns. It could be seen that Deckard knew this and it was just a subconcious memory making his dream in the Director's cut. And at the end, with Deckard ready to run off with Rachel, I just thought the presence of the unicorn origami was just Gaff's way of letting Deckard know he was there, but was letting them go. Being a friend, IOW. Not really complicated.
@@druidriley3163 Well, when the studio cut out the Unicorn dream sequence, that's what the unicorn origami became...a thing to let Deckard know that he was there and chose not to retire Rachel. But with Scott's original dream sequence added in, the Unicorn becomes something more and lets us know exactly who Gaff knows Deckard is.
@@96Eclipsed - well that changed everything.
"Shoot the chicken "
I just cant. You are hilarious.
This is what i love about Cinefix. Not only do they make the best cinematography list videos on YT, but they also attract very interesting people in the comments.
Some of the most memorable lines in movies were improvised by the actors on the spot.
TY for sharing!
The coconut halves from Monty Python and the Holy Grail
"Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?"
@@comradejosephstalinoftheus8698 what is the air velocity of an unladen swallow?
"A five ounce Bird cannot carry a 1 pound coconut! "
Lol! Agreed! And I love the quotes, guys!
The spinning top from inception is one of my favourite props because it's so simple but it symbolises so much and even steals the ending scene
Not only that, but thanks to the perfect cut at the end, it made Inception's ending and therefore Inception as a whole one of the most talked about and well-known films of this decade
This is one of their best videos, but I have to admit to some astonishment that Cobb's (or was it Mal's?) totem wasn't mentioned.
When its use was explained, I guessed the ending shot.
Diamond Gaming yea it's actually very similar to the blade runner unicorn, i would've picked the top just because of its prevalence throughout the movie and not just the end
Yeah, it was the first thing that came to my mind when I read the title of this video.
Watching all of Cinefix's videos in order should get you a filmmaking degree
Always a great list, but under #4 symbolism I would have the least mentioned Roy Hobbs’ Wonderboy Bat in “The Natural”. Great list.
The Maltese Falcon is the ultimate movie prop. The entire film revolved around it. It actually functions as a character in the story.
"Almost everything Jackie Chan touches in all of his films." Hahaha 3:05
Ladders, shopping carts. Amazing stuff
One does not simply fight Jackie Chan in a room full of props...
Against Jackie Chan you truly take on the world. Mostly because he will use any and everything within sight and arms reach.
@@nyazillagojira7079 - And you won't ?
There's enough amazing/important props out there that each sub category on this list could be a complete list on its own.
Exactly why they do the honorable mentions. They know more than one thing deserves credit in the subcategories
canadiankazz Watchmojo probably woulda done that
Lily Elbe‘s scarf in the Danish Girl from the final scene is another great one. Had me in tears!
How is the Red Ryder BB gun not on this list?
Uncle Flansy because you’ll shoot your eye out!
YOU STILL HAVEN'T DONE SOUNDTRACKS/SCORES
AlbieHay 40012
they are probably not proficient in music so they dont want to.
AlbieHay 40012 They said they won't do it because of copyright
Yet there are many channels that do it in their video essays
Since they are a cinema-channel, i'd rather see a "Best use of a Song/Score in a movie" than a "Best Song/Score" itself. This would be way more interesting, and also it'd be easier to find ten sub-categories, like a song symbolizing a relationship with "As Time goes by" in "Casablanca", a song to counter violent scenes like "Stuck in the Middle with you" in "Reservoir Dogs", or a whole soundtrack used as the fuel for the movie as in "Baby Driver" and even as the representation of a character as in "Guardians of the Galaxy"
Pretty sure I saw a reply from them on a similar comment about this, they said that they can't do it because of copyright reasons.
Amazing props that should've been mentioned:
•The coin from No Country for Old Men
•The rug from The Big Lebowski
•The watch from Interstellar
•The top hat from The Prestige
•The painting from The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Zippo lighter from the usual suspects not the cup !
The rug is a good one, and I've not seen The Grand Budapest Hotel so I won't comment on that. But the coin in No Country (much as I love that movie) is a pretty common device, the watch in Interstellar is fairly unremarkable, and while the top hat is a great visual indicator of the truth, it's a pretty one-note one-time use (IIRC) rather than a movie/genre/atmosphere/character defining object.
The magic painting from Dorian Grey.
These lists are always so good. The way he grazes things is perfect and his transitions between the different places and categories is so smooth.
Loved this list guys, great picks! The break down of Kikuchiyo's sword as a prop used as more than a weapon but a part of him as a character was awesome.
I felt the same way about that 'clothes hanger' blade when I first saw it, but as the character grew, it went from a silly toy to a force of nature!
2:09 Cinefix apologizing for that Top Ten Westerns list no. 1 pick
Rohan Das I was thinking the same thing, awful list.
I will give Cinefix credit for their self-awareness. Not the first time they acknowledged complaints in the comments, though their response is to the tune of "we hear you, we don't care".
Its their channel after all
+natester n28 it is ok
…and we forgive them, right?
Great list! Very well put together. Very happy that the bottle from 'The Gods Must Be Crazy' got a mention.
Such a big smile on my face when I saw that.
Such an awesome movie, and a well deserved mention.
I don't think it got enough mention, honestly. That was the driving force of the entire movie...the whole reason the movie even existed.
Great underappreciated movie
+caffeineadvocate Oh yeah - super good call! :)
“Cain Mutiny” Captain Queeg’s steel fidget balls he rolls in his hand at the court martial.
The Top from “Inception”.
My first thought goes back to elementary school: the French film "The Red Balloon".
...or The Red Violin, maybe?
Yes. The Red Balloon was certainly a prop that was a character.
Fuck those kids that killed him
I thought the very same thing. What a great film. I wanted to be that kid. Escaping my screwed up child hood. 😁
Can't believe you didn't mention the rug from big lebowski for #6
John King neither can i
John King It really tied the room together.
John King They most certainly left it out... MARK IT ZERO!
We are stoners, and CineFix just fed us scrambled eggs by doing that
Obviously, you're not a golfer.
Ruby slippers from wizard of oz?? So iconic
@@justinfranchi5936 only just started watching the video but the Ruby Slippers aren’t number 1?? What the hell 🤷♂️ also Samuel L’s wallet from Pulp Fiction better get a mention
@@justinfranchi5936 and it gets a mention...... hell to the yeah
My dream memorabilia would be Hannibal's drawing of Clarice holding the lamb in 'Silence of the Lambs'.
Probably the best video I've seen from this channel. Even the explanations for props from films I haven't seen made solid sense.
What about the automatic pilot in Airplane!?
There were so many awesome comedic props in that movie, but I'd go with the ear plugs.
It's a character
@@xaiphen4495 Here. What do you make of this.
Otto is was also used to sell cable TV to people in the early eighties
Otto
i've been binge watching this channel for the last, like, 3 days and i can't get enough. this is honestly the perfect channel.
This is how a top 10 video should be made, you guys really raise the bar
Props give so much depth and meaning to a movie, exceeding their intrinsic value/meaning as individual items. This video highlights a few of the immeasurable number of items which provide an additional dimension to our cinema viewing experience. Well done to its creators.
Sunglasses from They Live
Good one.
Costume.
👏👍
Jason or Michael Myers' mask, Freddy's glove, Jason's machete, the necronomicon, Lemarchand's box from Hellraiser, the stroller from Rosemary's Baby, the TV from Poltergeist, Hannibal's mask, and arguably the Chucky doll
My fav is the BOX from Hellraiser. It seems like a simple enough puzzle to solve, but it carries such a heavy price if you open it. It is a metaphor for Pandora's box, it is a summoning stone and a portal to hell. So many thing crammed into one tiny golden puzzle box.
That "comically large sword" was probably a Nodachi; a sword that predated the katana. The Nodachi was very heavy and difficult to make. It required a lot of strength to wield. That helped define the character as a strong man.
Nodachi are not quite so large, and have a much deeper curve. Swords of the size/shape of Kikuchiyos (being impractical) were really only made as offerings to temples/shrines, suggesting that he stole it from one. Gives a slightly different glimpse into the character. No less tragic though.
I was under the (perhaps mistaken) impression that such a sword was specifically intended to take down a horse. Any input? 🤨 🙂
This was a really good video. I really like that they mentioned many other movies. It kept everything interesting and it shows that they really did a lot of research and put work into it.
You left out Desperado's guitar. The diamond from Snatch. The briefcase in Dumb and Dumber. The Babe Ruth signed ball from The Sandlot.
Signed by some woman, some woman named baby ruth BAAAABE RUUUUTH!!!! AHHHHHHH!!!!
Hannibal Lecter's mask didnt get a mention?
If he included everything this video would be days long.
It always baffles me how knowledgeable these guys are
SCHMODOWN!!!!!
What about the rock hammer from Shawshank redemption????!!!
"I remember thinking it would take a man 600 years to tunnel through the wall with it. Ol’ Andy did it in less than twenty."
It was destroyed.
That thing is not so special. You can grab one at any rock and gem shop for $7
@@jaakkoparikka6060 hehe someone clearly hasn't seen this movie enough to get my joke
@@Louieman lol maybe that's why he deleted his comment and now i won't know
Your videos are such a treat to watch. Thank you for making them with such consistent quality.
Whenever these top 10 lists come out, I usually disagree with something. But in this case, everything is perfect - and when I first saw it was about props, I thought it was going to be lame. Very well done!
When he said 'McGuffin', I instantly knew exactly what he's going to pick.
That's a very good list. I love how the entries are categorized and how each has its own set of "honorable mentions" with other props. I wish Tony Stark's Arc Reactor was mentioned before #1 though :)
Fabulous channel, thank you so much. Great hints etc... cant believe I have never seen Spinal Tap looking for it now, thanks guys. Keep up the good work.
The cane from "Citizen kane"
Wait a minute
their was no cane in Citizen Kane!
Sergio Sarmiento This is perfection.
Sergio Sarmiento Or the snow globe
Of course its perfection, its a joke from a classic Simpsons episode. :)
you are thinking about the cain in The Cane Mutiny
If this Cinefix list doesn't include Rosebud from 'Citizen Kane', the coin from 'No Country for Old Men' or anything from 'The Mirror' then I must be living in an alternate reality.
I am hoping for the Delorean from BTTF
Or Max's car from Mad Max.
Matthew Boyd not really a prop
have u seen The Gods Must Be Crazy it is epic comedy
I disagree. His friends showed it to him as a toy, His boss used it like candy, and he used it as a weapon. It's a prop.
This is my first video seeing you guys and it was amazing. It is very refreshing to see a channel with such a wealth of knowledge of movies, compared to so many others. At least that I have seen. This video is for the movie buff. Not for the average person and I really appreciate that. Something, it seems, a lot of other channels don't do. This was a captivating and great video. Thank you.
I wrote these before watching the video. Zorro's mask, cape and sword were pretty cool. The Maltese Falcon. The Flux Capacitor? Wilson, the volleyball. Rosebud. The House in UP? Oscar Schindler's ring. Chaplin's shoes, cane, and hat as The Little Tramp.
Nice!
Got to have the pocket watch from the spaghetti western 'For a few dollars more'. That melody is as iconic as Clint Eastwood!
That shout out to eXistenZ made my day!
I love these videos. They captivate me, and tell me all kinds of things I'd never see with just one viewing of a film. Each one is a cinematic wormhole, and must be viewed two, maybe three times. Thank you--also, I've been humming your theme song all day.
Cheers, Kudos and Thanks a lot for Prop # 1. Made my day :) .. superb analysis. It does stands out.
The Red Violin? An entire movie through generations based on a prop.
The glasses from They Live shouldve been amongst those mentioned
You didn't include the little girl's red coat from "Schindler's List."
That is wardrobe not prop
I was sure that was gonna be their #2 pick
They could've got more.
This is one of the coolest and most interesting videos I've seen in a while
American Beauty's soundtrack is honestly one of the most chilling and beautiful things I've ever heard
The top hats from The Prestige! To me, more recognisable than the water tanks mentioned in this video.
Or the coin. Are you watching closely?
Thijs Lots of props from The Prestige could work in this list. Borden's rubber ball, the journals, the Tesla machine
Me too. I'd have thought the top hats would at least get a nod in their terrific montage intro parts. Speaking of which, I saw more memorable and iconic props get glossed over in those segments. Picking a briefcase over the Maltese Falcon??? The prop itself has a fascinating story!
@@steprockmedia now I'm going to have to look it up.
Thank you Cinefix, for inspiring me every time I watch one of your videos.
The Ruby Slippers are one of the most iconic props in the history of film. Should have been on this list.
How about a fucking Delorean???
#BtTF
I made a list of every movie mentioned in a Cinefix Movie List, check it out: letterboxd.com/darrencb/list/every-movie-included-in-a-cinefix-movie-list/
Brilliant! Thanks so much for doing that, you just saved me from taking a ton of notes.
No worries, I use it to keep track of what they mention as well.
Bookmarked. Great job man, thank you for that :)
Wow, this is actually so helpful! Now it's a lot easier to find new good films to watch, thank you so much :)
You're welcome.
This is such a good list. I didn't see all the movies on the list but I've seen most and this is one of the best list ever.
The fact that the One Ring from Lord of the Rings is not only not #1 but only briefly mentioned is astounding.
#1 Mclovin's ID. It was relatable, comedic and had alot of precise detail.
I love how you also appreciate European and Asian movies in these videos!
Really great selection, thank you for remind me of many beautiful films
I love the depth and breath of movie knowledge the curators of this channel have.
"There are times when we've picked Star Wars when maybe we shouldn't" Lol, you think.
Here are some others that come to mind:
the sled or snow globe or from "Citizen Kane"
the red stapler from "Office Space"
the Empire State Building from "King Kong"
the falcon statue from "The Maltese Falcon"
Eliot's bike from "ET"
the ruby slippers from "The Wizard of Oz"
I'd rather have the scarecrow's gun.
Golden watch in *for a few more dollars*
Blondie's gun in *the dollars trilogy*
Yes! The red stapler is definitely a prop that defines Milton's character.
The Speak&Spell fron E.T.
such a great video guys!!!
I am so glad you included Fitzcarraldo, for that alone you got my thumbs up.
i love the amp that goes to 11... that was great hahahaha
If watchmojo did this the top 5 would be lightsabers
lightsabers would probably be number one
well watchmojo sucks ass
Well made. A funny nit pick though:
"Along with his hat, it single handedly invokes his image." 1:02
Well... that's quite a contradictory gem. Logic really got whipped in the face there.
You guys nailed this list. Every choice was spot on.
Why are Cinefix vids so positive, whilst Looper is so negative?
Because they like movies. A lot.
IMO because negativity breeds attention, it's kind of like the News. The more clicks these sites get the more Ad /Sponsor money comes in
It's about the scrip writer.
Got to love the holy hand grenade
Your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elder berrys
I like how it’s about what makes something the best not just what you guys deem is the best
Damn, what a well thought-out list. Absolutely fantastic work, guys. Kudos!
You guys are the amazing!!!!!!!!!! Keep the amazing work up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
please some do some top ten videos for:
1) music scores
2) comedy characters
3) sequels
4) franchises
5) cameos
6) musicals
7) fourth wall breaks
Was kind of hoping to see the yellow barrels from Jaws somewhere in this list
Omg yes! Those barrels scared the hell out of me. I wanted to leave the theater!!!
Thank you, Cinefix. You just helped me with my screenplay.
The pocket watch is Somewhere in Time is a great prop - sets the entire movie in motion, ties the characters together, is metaphorical and obvious as the plot is themed around time and our ability to thwart it, and also is an enigma in that it is caught in a loop having no origin....he gets it from her, she gets it from him, thus it's the tragic revolving token of their fate.
One of my favorite props, the" Disintegrater Integrator", but be careful, it still has a few bugs in it. Thats what they called it in the original The Fly(1958). Another favorite prop, the Krell IQ mind projector. Forbidden Planet (1956). Hey, how about this iconic favorite prop, Robby the Robot, from the same.
Excellent movie
I wish you would of done the golden ticket from Willy Wonka for the MacGuffin but other than that, great list as always.
It's great to see a channel that is consistently quality, instead of just a bunch of inane meaningless lists. A good balance between just producing quality while also doing some click bait stuff to make money.
Very informative channel...thanks a lot for these incredible information....newest subscriber to the channel
I feel like the alarm clock from 1408 would fit nicely in this list as it can span a few different categories.
The one ring better be on here
Maurice R. Right?! It didn't even make it. This list is kind of a falsehood, bearing the title "best props."
They mentioned it at least
They mentioned the 6th Sense ring
They mentioned both rings
the one ring is literally the most famous movie prop of all time and they barely mention it. They hate the Lord of the Rings
You guys are so good at these videos
Let me just put it out there that these videos truly rock!
Dirty Harry's Magnum
Gotta disagree with number 3 the one ring triggers the most epic adventure in literature and film history I'd have to go with that.. but agree to disagree
I'm very upset that wasn't an actual entry on here!
The Dude's rug!!! It really tied the room together
As a props designer, I love you for this. Thank you : )
