They are from Tulsa, Oklahoma and were mentored by Leon Russell. G.A.P. stands for Greenwood, Archer, and Pine, the three major streets going through the Black Wallstreet area of Tulsa. They were hugely successful a long list if hits.

Most Funk bands had a lot of people. Partly because you needed a lot to create all the different sounds that comes with Funk but also I think that the early successful funk artists like James Brown had a bunch of people on stage and put on a big show so as other bands emulated that, it just became part of the genre The Gap Bands biggest hit was "you dropped a bomb on me" that is worth a listen. Some other Funk bands to try would be Zapp and Roger with "Doo Wa Diddy" or "More bounce to the ounce" or The Ohio Players with "Fire" or The Bar Kays with "Freakshow on the dance floor"

Guys, the lead singer is Charlie Wilson, aka Uncle Charlie who sings some great R&B songs that you may know.
    "You Are"
    "Charlie, Last Name Wilson"
    "There Goes My Baby"
More by The Gap Band -
    "Oops Upside Your Head"
    "Party Train"
    "Yearning For Your Love"
    "Outstanding"
These were all played at the skating rink back in the good old days.
One of my cousins who sings, was in a band who played a lot of Gap Band songs because they could sound very much like them. They weren't exactly a cover band, but their Gap Band songs were favorites by their fans and got the most requests.
I used to see them during rehearsal sometimes, and it was my way of getting a free concert when I was too young to see them at the club or a concert hall. Family perks. LOL!
Another cousin also had a band that performed fairly often, and there was some rivalry going on. The band that played Gap Band songs were very good and got a lot more out of town jobs and publicity, while the other one didn't have that great of a band, or that great of a singing voice, but always bragged about how much better his band was.
Finally, one year during a local summer festival that lasted three days, both bands were invited to perform, and there were also some big names in the business there performing.
It turned out that people loved the ones who didn't brag, and they had a much larger audience. LOL!
    Another funky/smooth band -
    *Cameo*
    "Candy"
    "Back and Forth"
    "Single Life"
    "Attack Me With Your Love"
    "Don't Be Lonely"
    "She's Strange"

They wear cowboy hats because they're from Tulsa and early on in their career were the back up band for Leon Russell, also from Tulsa. Well that was pure fun! It’s great to see you guys developing your musical vocabulary and associating bands as you get to know more and more. Roll on - there’s almost no limit to how much music there is out there to learn and enjoy. And while we all have our favorites which you’ll touch on now and then, we also get to ride along and broaden our knowledge too. I know the Gap Band, but not this track, for example. What a cool ride. Thanks!!!

This is my era. There was so much great stuff back then. Try another classic, 'Low Rider by War. Unilever thought it was so cool they resurrected it for their Marmite commercial. Or, you can just remember Cheech and Chong... czcams.com/video/BsrqKE1iqqo/video.html

Y'all in Oklahoma, why you crackin on the cowboy outfits?! 😂 And shame on you for taking so long to check out your fellow Oklahomans. 😉 They wear their influences on their sleeves (Funkadelic, Stevie Wonder, etc.) and they've collaborated with lots of others. Dave Grohl has said the drum fills from this influenced the opening drum fill on "Smells Like Teen Spirit." (!!) Lead singer Charlie is the last of the three Wilson brothers still around. Check out their early story song "Not Guilty" for some horn and guitar overload.

    They're from Tulsa Oklahoma!!
They're 3 brothers known as the Wilson brothers. Unfortunately 2 out of 3 of them have passed away. Ronnie Wilson died last November 3rd at the age 73. There's only the lead singer left we call him "Uncle Charlie" he's has a incredible story. He went from top of the world, to losing it all due to drug addiction to his full recovery and struggling back to the top. His voice and the bands work have made the "Gap Band'' bonafide ICONS!! I loved their songs "Burn Rubber" & "Outstanding". I hope you check them out.

The Gap Band originated in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The three brothers Charlie, Ronnie, and Robert Wilson were the core of the group. This song is originally from 1982. A few years later Robert Palmer did a remake of it in 1988 that was pretty good. It was on the same album "Simply Irresistible" was on.
For another Gap Band song you gotta do "You Dropped A Bomb on Me". The single radio version is the shortest (4:05)... there is an extended single version that is longer (5:13)... then there is the extended 12" version that is 13:04 long. I was playing that version of the song at work and my co-worker heard the air raid siren at the beginning and asked "What the hell is that?" I told him the Gap band... about 7 min later he walked my by cubical and it was still going and he asked "How long *IS* this dang song???" For the extended 12" version they bring back the siren and add in machine guns and sound of divebombing planes about that 7 min mark.

You can NEVER, EVER go wrong with The Gap Band. One of my absolute favorite songs of the ‘80s by a highly underrated band, in my opinion. Check out “I Don’t Believe You Wanna Get Up And Dance (Oops Upside Your Head)” for a uniquely fun Gap Band experience. That song is still in my head 40+ years later. 😂❤

Like others here are saying, their biggest hits and floor-fillers in the early eighties were "Burn Rubber On Me" (1980), "You Dropped a Bomb on Me" (1982), and "Party Train" (1983), but their first big hit was "Oops Upside Your Head" from 1979, all great funk songs in that late seventies funk style.
