History I found for you; *The Gap Band are a funk, soul and rhythm and blues group from Tulsa, Oklahoma. The band is fronted by the three Wilson brothers: Charlie, Robert, and Ronnie. The Wilson brothers are the sons of a Pentecostal minister and began their music careers singing in their father's church. The Wilson brothers first got together as a group in 1967 and initially called themselves the Greenwood Archer and Pine Street Band, named for North Tulsa's former African American business hub (once known as the Black Wall Street, destroyed in 1920) which ran along Greenwood Avenue bordered by Pine Street to the North and Archer Street to the South. The Gap Band started out performing in various venues all over their native Tulsa and recorded an unsuccessful debut album in 1974. The Gap Band hit their stride in the late 70's with such songs as "I'm in Love" and "Shake" (the latter was a Top five R&B radio hit). They scored a huge smash in 1979 with the groundbreaking single "I Don't Believe You Wanna Get Up and Dance (Oops Upside Your Head)." The Gap Band continued their winning streak into the 80's with such hit songs as "Steppin' Out," "Burn Rubber on Me (Why You Wanna Hurt Me)," "Humpin'," "Yearning for Your Love," "Party Train," "Early in the Morning," "I Found My Baby," "Outstanding," and the especially funky "You Dropped a Bomb on Me."*

It was only a matter of time before your funk journey led you to this song! Believe it or not, this band put out TWENTY albums between 1967 and 2010, and this is arguably their most famous song. You also have to check out "Outstanding", "Party Train", and "Burn Rubber On Me". This song's use of the synthesizer (doing the whistle and bomb sounds) was one of the most unique sound effects at the time to be incorporated into a song. And GAP stands for Greenwood Archer Pine. They consisted of three brothers - Charlie (lead singer), Ronnie, and Robert Wilson. Only Charlie is still around, but he's still going. In fact, he joined Bruno Mars in 2018 on Bruno's 24K Magic tour!

"The Other Wilson brothers" of Music
Charlie, Ronnie & Robert are the members of The GAP Band.
That is "uncle Charlie" on the lead vocal.
[In case you don't know (which, apparently, you do not!): The Beach Boys were, also, founded by a set of Wilson brothers (to my experience: the most famous ones in music!): Brian [vocals, bass, piano, main composer & arranger], Dennis [drums and vocals -unfairly dismissed & underrated!] and Carl [guitars & vocals]
    as was the Brooklyn band:
    MANDRILL!

The Gap Band was an American R&B and funk band that rose to fame during the 1970s and 1980s. The band consisted of three brothers: Charlie, Ronnie, and Robert Wilson, along with other members; it was named after streets in the historic Greenwood neighborhood in the brothers' hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Greenwood, Archer and Pine streets in Tulsa, OK Located on the north side. I remember they were discovered by another local, Leon Russell. They were all Tulsa friends / brothers of each other. Wilson and Irma Wilson, and brother to Charlie and Ronnie Wilson. All three siblings were raised in Tulsa. As a boy, Robert got his musical start playing drums, then guitar, then bass, in local churches. In 1973,

The GAP band is from Tulsa, OK. The letters come from the names of the streets from the streets they grew up on: Greenwood, Archer and Pine. If those names sound familiar, it's because it's from the historic Black Wall Street district destroyed in the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921.

    Ok so fun story.
I moved to Okmulgee, OK from California when I was 18 and I made my first best friend when I started working at McDonald’s.
Anyway, one day we were driving around in my car and the CD I had playin was Gap Band…. We grew up POOR, and many times we didn’t have a TV or cable. But we always had music. And my mom has AMAZING taste in artists and songs. And because of this I tend to only listen to old school music, Gap Band being one of my favorites since I was 5. So my mom actually got me that CD for a bday present.
So, that day with my friend in the car and this very song playing.. she looks at me and smiles and asks “you like this band?” And ofc I said no, I LOVE this band.
Then she says “I’m related to them. They’re my mommas cousins”……. I was like “yea… OK sure” 😂
So she has me talk to her mom and sure enough, they are most def fam.
A few years later I got to meet Charlie. It was awesome and I was absolutely star struck and awkward cuz I’ve never met anyone famous let alone a member of a band I loved since the age of 5. He was very kind and down to earth and gracious. Def one of those memories/stories I’ll always keep with me.
I live in Tulsa, OK now and EVERYTIME i see or drive on Archer, Pine or Greenwood I not only tell whoever is with me about the Gap Band but also this story.
