  • Art of Mind Management Part 8
Our mind has two parts: conscious and subconscious. Conscious mind is the one you are aware of. Subconscious mind is the one you have no awareness about. Everyone’s subconscious mind is different. But why?
Listen to this very inspirational life story of Arunima Sinha, the first female amputee to climb Mt Everest. What a story of positive attitude and determination! Why doesn’t everyone harbor such a positive attitude like her? Where do her positive attitude and determination come from?
Watch this video by Swami Mukundananda to understand the deep roots of our attitudes. Some attitudes we build in this lifetime and some we carry forward from our previous lifetimes. In other words, our mind is a product of previous lifetimes, contrary to the body, which is a product of this life. The gross (sthool) body is destroyed when the soul departs but the subtle (sookshma) body, including the mind, continues its journey with the soul. Thus, our attitudes are deeply rooted in past sanskārs. Hence, purification of the mind requires disciplined effort and practice.

Beautifully explained by Swami Mukundananda ji on the importance of subconscious mind. Subconscious mind is not of one life time but it is carrying from infinite lifetimes. Great to know the story of brave Arunima Sinha, even though she got handicapped, her soul is not defeated because of the strength of her subconscious mind. If we improve our subconscious mind we can be changed and can become a better person. Some people think it cannot be happened at all, but it is not true. More importantly Swamiji mentioned subconscious mind has been carrying from past lives. Great to know the concepts of rebirth. Swamiji gave the quotations from Nyaya Darshan on the concepts of rebirth, where small babies will fear, laugh, cry with no reason. And even blind persons will also get to see dreams. Without the concept of rebirth we cannot explain the difference of every persons present life situation. Swamiji gave another example of Hindu girl who was chanting Namaz without any reason in her childhood and explained, how our present memories will erase most of our past memories of previous lives. Swamiji also mentioned how our subconscious mind will take the impressions of present life and stores it into its memory even without our notice. Swamiji gave example, If a person thought during day time if I fly it would be very nice. When he goes to bed in his dream he might be flying because of the thought which was registered in his subconscious mind. Great to know when we fall into sleep, when the intellect get tired of thinking we will fall into sleep not because of physical tiredness.
Thank you Swamiji for your beautiful quotes, examples and logical explanation so that the knowledge can register in our minds and we can remember. We are indebted to your causeless mercy...

Absolutely wonderful gem of wisdom! The sub-conscious mind is hidden from mundane perception, yet it plays a powerful role in our way of being and outlook in life. Feeding the mind with uplifting and noble thoughts will help in empowering it so that we may live with greater wisdom and inner strength. Thank you for sharing this valuable knowledge!

Wow! In this amazing narrative, Swamiji describes how the soul carries the "vrittis" with it when it departs and those become our subconscious thoughts in the next life. These thoughts and proclivities are accumulated over numerous life times. Swamiji emphasizes the importance of spiritual earnings because those are the only things we take with us. Wow! Thank you, Swamiji!

Knowledge of the subconscious and conscious mind vital to understand and useful to emphasize the positivity, practise it deeply so it become part of oir subconscious and utilized at times of need. When we are in deep sleep state it is the atma that is still awake and conscious. In our wakeful life can we put the mind to sleep and will that then awaken the consciousness of us being atman ?
