  • Art of Mind Management Part 6
Our humanness comes from the ability to think and make informed decisions (vivek). The Kathopanishad states, “Use the intellect (buddhi) to control the mind, use the mind to control the senses, and cross over the ocean of Maya.”
The intellect makes the decision - it determines what we do or don’t do. The mind harbors feelings of love, hate, anger, greed, jealousy, etc. and all desires. There is usually an ongoing battle between the mind and the intellect.
We all desire happiness and decide to pursue it based on the knowledge we have. If the intellect believes that our happiness lies in acquiring a bigger house, then that becomes the dream we pursue. The day the intellect determines that material happiness is not the happiness our soul seeks, and our true happiness lies in loving God, our life will turn around. We will develop detachment from the material world and attachment to God.
“Once the intellect makes a firm decision, it controls the mind,” explains Swami Mukundananda. Our ability to make informed decisions is what makes us unique among the different species. We fall to animalistic levels when we lose the ability to think. To learn how we can leverage this relationship between the intellect and mind for our benefit, watch this inspirational and informative video clip.

    Wah! Bilkul sahi kaha Swamiji,
Head (buddhi) is the supreme king, Lord, ruler of the Kingdom of human beings n heart and mind are the helpers of the King to manage the kingdom with the right, logical and rational thinking unfortunately khudgarzi laalach kills the rational thinking n falls in the trap of mind n becomes the slave of mind instead of being its Lord its King.

Very beautiful explanation by Swami Mukundananda ji. How we can control the mind.It is based on the knowledge of the intellect. Swamiji gave the example of himself, people ask Swamiji, why did you take the path of God or path of sanyas? Is there some bad thing happened in your life etc; Even attending Swamiji's weeklong discourses people ask Him. Swamiji answered, no special thing happened, My intellect believed that i am part of God. Shree Krishna said in the Bhagavad Gita, Mamivamsho jeeva bhutah sanatanaha". Swamiji believed it totally and choose the path to God or God realization and serving God as the goal.
God has given us Mind and Intellect, two machines. Based on the knowledge of the intellect Mind keep on producing desires. For a person, his friends made him decided that there is happiness in alcohol. Then the person starts thinking how can I get alcohol all the time and becomes alcoholic. His intellect decided there is happiness in Alcohol.
Mind always wants its way to happen, but throughout the day we control the mind. A person has to go to office in the morning. When the alarm rings, because of his intellect decision that I need to go to office, he will get up and get ready to office even his mind says let me sleep some more as I am getting happiness in sleep. if he would have listened to mind, he would have kept on sleeping throughout the day.
    Even a small children will also control their mind. Parents come to Swamiji and says, my child doesn't want to study, Swamiji you please tell him. Swamiji asked the child, why are you not studying beta? He says "study is important for my parents not for me". But the same child when he goes to final exam he puts his mind 100% there. Because his intellect decided that I do not answer the questions properly, I need to repeat the whole year again. His mind came under full control during the duration of the exam period. If he had the same focus throughout the year, he would have become state topper in his class. But throughout the year, his intellects decision was, I still have time to study but not now, i can do later etc;
    Swamiji gave the beautiful verse
Sukharthi thyajate vidya vidyarthi tyajate Sukham
Sukharthinah Kuto Vidya Kuto Vidyarthinah Sukham
The person who wants immediate happiness rejects to gain knowledge and if the person wants knowledge rejects immediate happiness. Where will be happiness for the person who runs after knowledge?
Where he is going to get knowledge who runs after immediate happiness?
There are two kinds of path. Shreya and Preya, Preya means running after immediate happiness. Shreya means running after knowledge. Shreya will give us great happiness later on.
Swamiji gave the example how mind wants its comfort all the time. A person felt happy that he got a holiday from office due to the government declaration and came to Swamiji to inform that. Swamiji asked why are you so happy and what is the matter. He said I am celebrating today, as I got holiday from office. Swamiji asked for the reason, he said our prime minister has died and govt declared holiday. Swamiji said is that the news for celebration? He said, I do not have anything to do with prime minister, I am celebrating because I got holiday from office and I no need to work.
Mind would not like to work at all, if it in its way it will sit home and watch tv.
But we all know we go to office and work during the work hours because of the decision of the intellect.
Can we control the mind, yes it is possible through intellects decision. Swamiji gave the other example of a person, who did not eat anything for last 4 days. He was really hungry and his mind and senses are hankering for food. In this situation, if we give him the food plate with somany varieties in it, his senses will be hankering by looking the plate and he will be salivated to eat the sweet dish from the plate. In this situation, can he be detached from food?
Yes, it can be, if his friend says, there is poison in the food. Then this person's intellect hears the word poison, immediately intellect decides there is something wrong and stop eating. Immediately intellect informs the mind, mind inform senses and hand will stop eating and through the sweet dish.
In this case, if we say, you please eat the food, I will give you 1,00,000 rupees. but he says what will I do with that money when I am dead. I do not want to eat. Then again if we say, Is your friend Satya Harichandra or truthful person. He says no, my friend will lie few times a day.
Swamiji said, Even his friend is not truthful person, even we are willing to give him money, but he still did not eat food, because his intellect decided, if I eat I will die. Intellect has that power to control the mind. Mind cannot override intellect decision. We need to fill intellect with Divine knowledge.
