Oh how sickeningly ironic that is given his past
This is why I find Magneto so fascinating. He's simultaneously very much more aware of how not everyone is a good person deep down than Charles, but he's so blinded by his own hatred and bitterness that he doesn't notice that he became one of the bigots that he despises.
It's called the cycle of abuse, it makes so much sense, especially with current events. The abused learn from an abuser, and become an abuser. It takes very conscious action to break the cycle.
That is the entire purpose of Magneto as a character. The abused, in their fear of returning to that status, will gladly become abusers to avoid it. While Magneto is right to be afraid for his life and right to defend himself, he is not right to target all of humanity for it. We saw in these last two episodes how Magneto's actions have caused chaos on a scale even wider than Bastion. Dr. Strange had to continue his surgery using magic. Think of all the people who weren't so lucky. Think of all those people raiding stores. Of mutants like Omega Red being set free.
@@ApexGale Think of all the mutants who are still alive because Magneto had a way - the only way, in the moment - to stop Bastion's creations from wiping out their entire species in a single night. That was the end goal, after all. Bastion wants their *extinction*, and the UN has been knowingly and willingly backing him every step of the way.

If Magneto had been more rational, he could have rendezvous'd with the X-Men and come up with a plan to stop Bastion and terminate his control over the Primes. Instead he went nuclear, harming millions more than Bastion, putting the image of mutants in an even worse place, and freeing mutants who will continue to make humans fearful of them.
Bastion is 100% a villain, don't get me wrong. His idea of a better world was to turn all of humanity into a Sentinel collective and turn all of mutantkind into slaves. But Magneto is no better - his goal was to take an asteroid into the atmosphere and piss off with a select few, leaving any future mutants born on Earth to deal with the fallout of his actions. Xavier's beliefs seem too idealistic but ultimately, he is the one who proposes a solution that would work. You can't erase hatred in a couple of years, and he knows that. He understands his battle for mutant human equality and improvement of relations is a generational one. It's why he founded a school - because it is something you have to nurture from a young age, into adulthood, to carry into the future. It is an endless struggle, but the moment you give up is the moment you fail.

and I know that the Onslaught talk is getting tiresome but just to remind, Onslsught is what happens when a good man such as him has had enough. Id assume after Season 2 there would be an event that would break Charles' will
He says what everyone already knows. Everyone is in a rush to use their victim card, they don't even try to see the progress made, and the future being brighter.

I really like how they make young Magnus look like Quicksilver. Father like son indeed. I hope that the MCU will stick to it.
The MCU already changed Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver's pasts, they aren't related to Magneto in the movies. But this episode did in fact confirm that they are his children, when Kelly checks Magneto's file.
@@ApexGale There may be opportunity for a retcon if the X-Men/mutants get incorporated into the MCU. Say that their parents they remember weren't really their biological parents (or at least not their dad) and introduce Magneto as their bio dad. Comic canon can't seem to decide if they're mutants or magic anyway.

In Magneto's defense, he actually followed Charles dream before Genosha got attacked
No lie, until episode 5, I really thought he was going to stay on that path. He really seemed to grow into the role. Would've loved to see moments where he had to do Charles' job, like talking down a scared teen mutant with unwieldy power. But realize he's terrible at it because he's nothing like Charles and has an epiphany that he has to do it his way. Would've made for a great filler episode. Also, I couldn't get enough reformed Magneto. He looked so happy 🥲

I was watching that scene where Xavier was convincing Magneto of who he was and why they should trust each other and every time I saw Charles lean forward I could have SWORN they were about to kiss.
People say Magneto was right when he calls humans “genetic inferiors”.
It’s tragic this survivor is using the same language and outlook as his oppressors. The cycle is evident but people still flock to a vengeful mindset. The German, mutants, and even the audience.
The never-ending cycle, in trying to prevent such atrocities he ends up committing them himself, another prisoner of his own mind basically.
It’s saddening to see the cycle of abuse continue.

that's the point, magneto seems like the "right" person but ultimately he is a traumatized and scared individual who prioritizes his own safety first. compared to xavier who could do so much more damage but chooses not to, holding back as much as he can because to act on his intrusive thoughts would be to prove humans correct.

Magneto really had no choice at the time. It was either that or those mutant children getting killed by Sentinels. He really was not in his right mind especially considering he just got front row tickets to his THIRD genocide.
The subtext runs deep. This mirrors what it's like to be gay in times past: Xavier representing someone who is out, or at the very least a name to know in the gay community; and Magnus representing someone in the closet because he knows full well what it means to be hated by those who know the truth about who and what you are.
These two are probably the best characters for this kind of subtext tbh

The subtext doesn't work tho when both gays and straights who like living would be funding the Sentinel programs out the wazoo to keep mutants from destroying everything. The subtext also doesn't work when both Xavier and Magneto in their home mediums and somewhat in this continuity have authorized hits on and personally tried to merc muties who were deemed too dangerous to live on the same planet as them. When was the last time a gay killed a fellow gay for being a walking global catastrophe waiting to happen?

The original series was written by people who believed in Xavier, even despite the flaws.
This 97 series is from people who have leaned more towards Magneto, despite some necessary implications.
You can tell because Xavier using his powers to overwhelm Magneto and do what he thought was right and save those he cared about took precedence over attempting to convince Magneto entirely. In essence, by using his powers to overtake Erik's mind... Charles Xavier admitted that Magneto was right too. His only objection was that he went too far.
Feel like X-men 97 is more about magneto than any of character. Enjoyed this new X-men run!

Since they were making references that could have been connected to X-Men first class I was kind of hoping that the bar scene would have Xavier with full head of hair and Magneto's hair be black like in the movie.
