Ideas to encourage kids in prayer:
1. Lead by Example: Children often imitate adults, so regularly pray in front of them and include them in your prayers. Make it a delightful authentic experience.
2. Daily routine: Set specific times for prayer, such as before meals, at bedtime, or in the morning, to make it a regular part of the day. Also be willing to share your understanding as to why and when you are praying.
3. Keep it Simple: Use simple language and short prayers that are easy for children to understand and remember. Examples are: Thank You God! Wow, praise God! Look at this beautiful flower. Lord, help me to see Your light in others.
4. Share Stories and Visuals: Use Bible stories, Saint stories, or point out the good in the witnesses and/or neighbors around you. Use visual aids like prayer cards and images to make prayer time engaging.
5. Use Music and Songs: Children often respond well to music, so incorporating religious songs or hymns can make prayer time more enjoyable.
6. Teach by Modeling: Teach children the words and meanings of traditional prayers like the Our Father, Hail Mary, and others by praying them openly and together.
7. Create a Prayer Space: Designate a special place in your home for prayer, with items like a cross, candles, flowers or a small altar to make the experience more meaningful.
8. Encourage Spontaneous Prayer: “Wow” is a great prayer word to invite awe into the creation and love of God. When passing a cemetery pray for the souls buried. When passing a Mary statue tell Our Lady you love Her. Encourage children to talk to God in their own words, expressing their thoughts, gratitude, and concerns.
9. Involve Them in Prayer Intentions: Ask children who they would like to pray for or what they want to pray about, making them feel involved and invested. Bring a notebook because their words are often a gift of truth in love.
10. Praise and Encourage: Praise children for their efforts in prayer and gently encourage them if they are reluctant, making sure prayer is seen as a positive and loving experience.
