This longsword made by Stephan Lockwood is representative of an Oakeshott type XVIIIb, and with it's very slender profile, could even be referred to as an estoc. In this review, I give an overview of Lockwood Swords, discuss the communication issues I had with Mr. Lockwood, and go over the sword + scabbard, taking a look at each part. I do some cutting, suggest some things that could be improved, and finally give my opinion on if this sword is worth the $1870 price tag (including scabbard).

sad that there'd be basically 0 complaints if he just changed his wait estimate and sent out some copy-pasted progress updates when warranted. great review.

It really is a shame that many people don't seem to grasp that communication with your customers is absolutely vital.

Very-well elaborated on the buying experience. Seems pretty consistent to other people's recent experience. I bought one of his swords pre-owned in perfect condition, so I didn't have to deal with that hassle. But his sword itself is truly of high quality. Everything I want on a sword of this price range. The edges are the sharpest production I've had, and even sharper than most of the custom makers' output. Truly outstanding. The guard and pommel peen block on mine have some sharp edges like some of the VA swords I have, looks like he has corrected that on recent output like yours with chamfered edges and corners. I do agree that his type XVIIIb swords should beef up the base thickness to around 8mm to handle more like that type of sword. A few of his other models based on the XVIIIb and XVa seem a bit thinner than desired at the base, and the convex distal taper makes them a bit tip heavier than the usual of these types.

Loved that you gave it the attention to show some thrusting this time! We as a community need to come up with a more consistent thrusting testing just as we have several means of easily comparing cutting. Great review dude.

It took him almost two years to get my order completed. He only responded when I told him he was going to be hearing from an attorney if he didn’t tell me why he quoted eight months, and I didn’t hear from him for over a year. The man is horrible at taking care of his customers.

Nice, was looking forward to this. Unrelated but Matt just did a video about the release of the 1796 light cavalry sabre by him and windless. Hopefully that review next if you do get one? Thanks.

I haven't watched his review yet, but it does look intriguing. My sword budget is currently tapped out for awhile, though, so I can't afford to buy it right now.

Wow! That cutting was great! Really puts the DSA Gothic (with the wider "cut-centric" blade) into perspective.

I've been looking forward to this one! I was very curious to see how your version compared to mine, which was completed mid-2020.
The most striking thing is that guard in the gap - yours looks very tightly shaped and well done, whereas mine was quite substantial and, quite frankly, a bit sloppy. It looks like Lockwood took previous criticisms to heart, and it's encouraging to see tangible improvements like this.
I was also very interested in your blade measurements. My 1014 also seems to deviate quite a bit from the listed specs, though it's sometimes difficult to see how different it is from pictures alone. My blade is a bit closer in length, at 36.5"/927mm, but also starts off considerably wider at the guard, around 44mm. As a result, my sword actually looks to me more like a XVa due to that more pronounced profile taper, despite also having a slightly less acute point. This was a bit surprising, as I was expecting it to resemble something like the Munich sword, and while yours is a bit shorter, I think the profile more closely resembles that.
These kinds of deviations and inconsistencies are a bit surprising since, as you mention, these swords have some of the best and most consistent blade finishes around, and the overall attention to detail is clearly there. They still perform beautifully, but when you're at this price range, I think it's fair to expect closer adhering to listed specs.
The scabbard looks really nice with those bronze fittings. The fit being a bit loose was interesting, as mine is actually slightly tighter than I'd prefer. Either way, they're pretty and do the job well.
At the end of it, though, the communication issues you experienced are kind of inexcusable, and I hope Lockwood has taken serious steps to avoid anything like this going forward. Of course sword makers are busy people, and for most of them the "estimated completion times" can be taken with a huge boulder of salt, but when people are putting down hundreds of dollars just for the deposit, the least you can do is provide timely updates to confirm that the order hasn't fallen into the void. In your shoes, I don't blame you for having a bad taste in your mouth, and I'm very sad to say I'd probably avoid ordering for Mr. Lockwood for the time being, at least until it's clear that things have changed.
Anyways, great review as usual, thanks!

Thanks! I hope Mr. Lockwood works to improve his communication and some of the little details, like meeting specs and pommel alignment. At the end of the day, I received an outstanding sword, but maybe not quite what I was expecting and certainly not in the timeframe I was expecting.

Almost all, the medievial sword of that type I have examined does not tapper evenly. Very often it tapper at on angle toward 40 %-55% of the blade and at a different angle toward the tip.

Thank you for the detailed review. How would you compare this to Albion The Munich Sword with Gothic Style Half-Wire Wrap Grip on Kult of Athena? SKU: ANH19G. Sorry i cant post a link since youtube will ban it. The Albion sword is $1k more expensive than the Lockwood. Its slightly heavier with a fancier grip. Do you think its worth it? Lol.

    • @alientude
      @alientude  Před 8 měsíci +2

The most experience I have with the Munich is admiring one at a con. I will say it's likely more historically accurate to the type than the Lockwood. I personally adore the look of the Munich in the gothic configuration, half-wire, with black grip and blackened hilt furniture. With Albion's recent price increase, that setup brings it to $2848, which is a rather difficult pill to swallow, since that's into the price range of getting a full custom. I'm not sure I would want to pay nearly $3k for it. But I'm not going to say absolutely without a lot more experience with one.

@@alientude That’s true, given the blade quality are very similar. I love the design of the Sulowski, but after watching your review, I’m slightly concerned about their blade quality. As you said in the review, it’s not sharp enough and slightly too flexible.
