- During my first trip to Canyonlands National Park, I checked out the Needles district hiking over 19 miles of the beautiful district. I started at the Elephant Hill TH, hiked over to Chesler Park to the Druid Arch through the Big Spring Canyon and back to the car. It was an AWESOME day!

Wow! That was a big hike you did. I had hoped to see more of this hike about 20 years ago, but I got too hot. I really appreciate your video!
Amazing video as per usual. I always end up back at your channel when I’m planning my own hikes. Looks awesome my man
Water is EVERYTHING in the desert. Being a Coloradan I'm so used to there being water on nearly every trail that you simply need to clean. My best friend and I attempted Hall Creek Canyon (UT) last year and things went TERRIBLY wrong and water became an issue. Never again will I question taking too much water into the desert,
agreed, I bring enough to have at least 1/2 l leftover. Also, I really appreciate salts and electrolytes on hot days
Another great area in the Needles District is the Salt Creek drainage. When I was there in 1985, much of it as accessible by four wheel drive, but it's now hiking access only. It's features a canyon with perrennial stream in part of it's length, Angel Arch, and incredible archaeological features: Lot's of Anasazi ruins, and spectacular rock art, including "All American Man" and "The Four Faces.
Great video. Laughed at the Mediocre Amateur call out. I watch their channel but those guys are crazy. Your channel gives someone like me a more realistic idea of hikes to do. Thanks for the videos.
Nothing but respect for those guys haha
You’re not a lunatic for doing that loop in one day but 2 liters of water in the high desert for that hike is a bit loony. Good video, did you find any of the old cowboy petroglyphs?
@@HikeMoab Don't believe so - saw some red ones that I point out towards the start of the video but not sure what those were exactly.
Yeah nice shout out. 2 of my favorite channels on YT. Thanks for the awesome vid, VS!
Wow what a cool spot for a hike, great video!
Spectacular scenery, quite a departure from Colorado mountains. I hope you had some water stashed at your car... and a few cold beers.
Always haha - I know myself by now. Kept me going for the last 2 miles knowing I had ice cold beverages in the car
Nicely done. Looks like an awesome loop. 👍 Thanks for sharing.
Just got home from our own "Needles" trip and can't wait to go back for more. This video was our inspiration to go. Thank you for sharing!!
wonderful video, really makes me miss my favorite place on earth
You are quite the Hiker. Extremely impressive. I’ve watched now quite a few of Your hikes and enjoying all of them. Oh, Juneau and Your wife are quite the Hikers too. Thanks Virtual Sherpa..
Great place to wander ,just like you are doing .
Great video! I was there last week that place is something special, well really all of souther Utah is.
Very, very good job!!!! You have really improved your videos.
Uau! Que maravilha! Amei, que lugar lindo! Merece mil likes💙
Superb content. I’ve logged 6 backcountry visits in this District and I’m still speechless about the scenery. I’ve often described it as Hobbit like. My warmest hike was in 106 degrees Fahrenheit and I was also stranded during a flash flood in Elephant Canyon-one that an older ranger said was of historic value. I’m from CO yet this place has my heart. Love to hike there in September when the travelers vacate. Cheers mate and well done on the content of this trip.
Such a great hike. We were there on a Sunday in September and similarly saw almost no one.
Love the area. Quite a distance with all these ups and downs.
I planned a 2 day trip to the needles this summer during a 4 week road trip. But for covid's sake I couldn't fly over to the US.
But the needles stay on my bucket list for next year!
Happy hiking
Love the socks!…
Awesome! I did almost that exact route a couple years ago. If you get up to Island in the Sky, I recommend the Syncline Loop for the terrain and solitude (make sure to take the spur trail to the middle of the crater too it's awesome), and Lathrop Canyon for the god-tier views. Both are difficult, all day hikes like this one. Also, 4 liters water is about right. Camel up at the car and carry 3 with you to save carried weight perhaps.
This! Syncline is one of my favorite trails of all of Utah’s Big 5
Keep up the great work! Maybe next year you can do a Vestal Basin video?
This is the coolest hiking video I've seen in quite some time. Did you see any snakes out there?
No wildlife at all unfortunately.
Between Cortez and grand junction colorado there are similar country , rarely visited
Thinking about doing this one next week. It's my first time to the Needles and the amount of trails is daunting, since I generally agree with your taste I was thinking this would be a great guide to follow. In retrospect, do you have any edits to the route you would suggest? I definitely CAN do 19 miles, that's about on par with the longest day hikes I've done, but if there's a different way that you think might be more enjoyable for a first timer to the area I'd appreciate the advice!
It’s a sweet spot you will have fun. The options to shorten it would be to do either the first half of the vid (return to car after Druid) or second half of loop (skip Chesler park). Gun to head id choose second half if I HAD to but did really enjoy the whole loop.
Live in Colorado, from the northeast? I am curious where. I live in New Jersey, but have been to Moab on a regular basis mountainbiking and many other spots in Utah as well as Colorado. Was in the Needles back in the 90s. Love it so much. Love your videos too!
From southern NH originally 👍🏽
You should do a video about the CO national monument and McInnis canyon national conservation area. The rattlesnake arches are worth a whole video by themselves!
Hikes in that area soon! Have done rattlesnake arches a while back (hike on the site), but wasn’t doing videos at the time. Really awesome spot as well.
Do you strictly use your Garmin watch to track your hikes? If yes, how long will the battery last while tracking? Thank you.
Yup - always how I track them. I have an older model so the battery is going a bit, but it will usually last for 12ish hours of active tracking. The new ones last much longer. For overnights, I bring the charger to keep it going over multiple days. This is a link to the new one: amzn.to/3eZJo7N and the 5 which is on sale: amzn.to/35yxgHS
Are there any water sources on the trail for those that plan on camping?
Not that I can remember - but I would guess it depends on when you visit.
Sweet video! How'd you get so many subscribers?
Hours and hours and hours of grinding.
Sexy socks brother! Thanks for the look around.
Fantastic channel a vids. You should add some background music though! We’re talking about moving to Utah, so this vid was right up my alley! Thanks bro!
What’s your def of a Karen?
Great video! We're heading to Moab this weekend and you inspired me to do this hike down to the druid arch!
