    I have never come across a singer/songwriter whose music never stales for me before this woman. In the 90's, driving home, couldn't wait to get there so I could put on one of her cds, kick back and just immerse myself in her music. aaaahh......sooooo good. And that is still true today.

    My sister listened to her non-stop in middle school and high school, and I would make fun (grrll power!). Then as a guitar player my ears perked up the first time I heard Out of Range.
    Then I started listening to her more than my sister! Seeing her at Uconn Storrs in I think '97 was on of my favorite concerts I have ever seen. So good and she is funny too.

    It's nice to see Ani appreciated for her guitar playing. As a male I've always found her playing to be as unique as her songwriting. I think as she has matured her playing has gotten better. It seems to breathe more. Kind of like she has dropped that mode of clamoring for peoples attention that she described in her earlier days...

    Take note all you wine bar, coffee shop, etc. solo acoustic guitar/ vocal performers on her "secret" of strategically using dynamics to your advantage; let your dynamics reflect how you feel about what you are playing and singing about. Thanks for the pointers, Ani...

    • @Neuroneos
      @Neuroneos Před 4 lety +1

      I don't think it's such a wise advice. Dynamic range works well when you're one of the greatest songwriters in the history of popular music. If you don't have a substantive tune behind them, dynamics will feel awkward and out of place. Listen to Swan Dive, Dilate or Both Hands: the dynamics aren't merely for effect, they serve an aesthetic that is extended to all aspects of the tune. Songs that don't need them (Lifeboat, Untouchable Face, Rainy Parade, etc) don't have them.

  • @RocketKirchner
    @RocketKirchner Před 3 lety +2

    her tunings have a very open oceanic sound that works good for percussion . Micheal Hedges was the genuis at this stuff , but Ani uses some it very well to lay a foundation for mood and lyrics.

    • @tinghitiano
      @tinghitiano Před 9 lety +1

      of course it's about much more than a "simple" allergie to water. as i said: the allergic feeling (perceived in a very wide way.....and a very modern way).
      i needed this clarification she gives in the interview, because i can't imagine ani sympathising with this sort of feelings. i was very surprised: in her lyrics she normally goes through her feeling in an heroic way.
      now i understand better: it came from an almost sarcastic feeling to a sympathising feeling.... i think that's the way: compassion but just if we put ourself into it. otherwise it would be arrogance.
      complicated.... but i guess the allergic feeling is really modern and complicated.
      me too i love this artist since ever!

    • @bobbacerach3355
      @bobbacerach3355 Před 9 lety +1

      tinghitiano The lyrics can also be understood, as I did, that they are about being a human being. We all have our flaws, some of which we are not responsible for, they are just there. Be it through some physical defect (such as allergies) or through experiences we have had and shaped us. You don't need peoples sympathy for them, but you need people to recognise that you are who you are.

    • @anthonycovattamusic
      @anthonycovattamusic Před 9 lety

      Bob Bacerach yeah i hear you both. I was just saying that to be satirical I guess. People tend to take lyrics so literally. When there is a long story behind each song. :)

  • @tinghitiano
    @tinghitiano Před 9 lety +1

    hahaha.... i was surprised about the song "allergic": i wasn't able to imagine ani sympathizing with the "allergic" feeling.
    now i'm fine with her clarification.
    i can't sympathize with this word.
    great new album! just waiting to see her live again! i miss her and her disarming smile! she's far too rarely on the road in europe! (understandably)

      This is actually a custom made for her. She consulted with Alvarez and the outcome was a 25.5 scale but set in baritone giving it a sound that is different to other baritones. The body is Alvarez's Masterworks mini jumbo body,its got a system 600 preamp, and its made with all solid woods. The back and sides are mahogany, a cedar top and ebony fretboard.

    • @Return2Self
      @Return2Self Před 7 lety +2

      Thanks. Did you get that info from Premier Guitar? Can't be 100% sure but that isn't the guitar that is being played here. For a start the tone is higher than a baritone. Plus the body is D shape vs J shape. After a little google search I'd say this guitar is the MSD1. Size, tone and 12th fret marker is a give away.

    • @liracul
      @liracul Před 7 lety

      Your right, I remember reading it in an article and she had this exact guitar in photo. I should've know from the fretboard(doesnt look ebony). But yes it looks like a perfect match with that msd1. Thanks...
      upon further research, ani stated that the custom guitar i was mentioning looks like an "oversized alvarez WY1". Thanks for correcting me. peace.

  • @SiggyMe
    @SiggyMe Před 9 lety +2

    It is a challenge to play in clubs and bars as you are competing with the noise level of people's conversations and their attention and at the same time to feel like you are connecting with audane. As Ani pointed out you have to be a bit of a sales person in that the presentation needs to be more interesting and present then other competing attention getters. I think that learning to connect not only with music also with some conversation or a funny short story as transitional to guide people into the musical moment.. Also Ani is telling a musical story, yet sometimes you need to mix nonmusical stories I think she said its the contrast of music silence and music presence.

    As much as I have loved this woman's work over the years, I've been more and more disappointed with each passing album. I go into it thinking "maybe this will be as good as Up Up Up or To The Teeth", and it really hasn't been.
    I understand that people change, artists more than most, so that impacts the finished product. I guess I just like the wonderfully wounded version of Ani more than the domestic bliss version of Ani. I identify with the version whose music was defined by anger, hurt, indignation. I understand that she's not that person anymore, but this version is like a lioness without teeth. Kind of sad, really.

      MrJoeCage I really do agree, I just saw her last night and was impressed (especially of her guitar playing) but left feeling her best stuff is behind her. She did a new song that had a really different sound and was great but her approach sort of paints herself into a corner to where each song come off sounding similar. Passion only gets you so far, it's almost like success was too easy for her. Ani, shave your head, join a punk band and play electric in standard tuning.
