Impulse Buying John Deere Attachments on Marketplace - Fixing a 59" Snowblower and hooking to JD 755

  • I get impulsive whenever searching Facebook Marketplace and discovering something that will work with the old John Deere 755 Compact tractors that I have at home. I found a leaf collection system like I had been searching for and when I went to look at it the owner also had a 59" snowblower there that I couldn't resist. I wasn't even sure if the blower would fit my tractor or if it would work if I did get it connected. In this video I repair the John Deere 59" Snowblower and mount it up on the 755 compact tractor to hopefully see if it will work.

    Neil, I guess it's time that you knew why you called them JC clips. Do you remember being in the shop with me when you were a little kid? I would be working on something that had one of them Clips on it and it would not come out? I would take a hammer and beat on the end of it to get it out, and the thing would take off flying and I would say "JC did you see where that went?" I actually left out some letters. I really meant to say "J-_-_-_- C-_-_-_-_- Did you see where that went? and then I'd have you look for it. I guess you are now old enough to know how you got to know them as JC Clips. - Dad

      😄Oh man, that makes total sense now. I knew there had to be a reason! Forget cotter pin, I will continue to call them JC Clips. Seems like a much better name than cotter pin and now we know why for multiple reasons! Thanks Dad!

      4 years in the racing world we called them Hood pins. I like your dad's terminology... I call the little springs that the needle on a carburetor sits on SOB Springs God forgive me! Cuz I'm telling you right now my daughters look for several of those and never found them in my shop those things bounce forget it it's like trying to find a contact lens on your shop floor :-)

    Neil, I come back to this video every now and again, but today it has a new meaning. I found an old garden tractor snowblower in my late grandpa’s barn, and it hit me like you said, “I gotta have it”

    Over the years my mother and step father have owned all three tractors of that series; the 755, 855, and 955. The first setup he had was the 755 no cab, loader bucket and the box blade. Pretty limited as you can imagine. Soon after he got a snowblade. Ran it that way for several years. Next came the 855 with a cab and a rear mounted snowthrower to which I promptly ran into a skid of pavers and broke the first of many, many shear bolts. Mom is gone now and he's 85 years old so his tractor time is at an end but the 955 with cab front mounted blower and rear snowblade sits in the pole barn. I'd stick with that configuration out of them all.....hard to beat.

      That is so cool to hear a story like that and the evolution of equipment that they used over the years. Funny how time and budget adjust as we get older to better accommodate comfort and convenience. That's the way it should be. I hope to also one day get an 855 and 955 to play with and work on. I really have no desire or need for anything newer really as I feel this era of machine is about perfect. I am actually looking forward to trying the blower if we get any snow this year. Should be fun. Thanks for watching!

    Vinegar will eat away at rust if you can soak things somehow. Take rusty bolts and soak them in vinegar overnight and they will be like brand new in the morning, if there is any metal left of course haha. I'm serious try it and you'll be amazed. Makes you wonder what it does to your insides ? Snowblower is better than a blade any day, put the snow where you want, don't have to worry about pushing banks back to make room for the next storm and if the ground isn't frozen yet you can lift the blower up an inch or so, can with a blade too but less apt to get stuck with a blower I think and don't dig up the ground .

    I just picked up a 755 to join my 855. The 855 will be for mowing (15 acres with the belly mower) since it has turf tires. The 755 came with a loader and another belly mower that was barely used and loaded tractor tires- now I have 2 loaders but the 755 has skid steer quick attach instead of a pin on bucket. The 755 will be my logging and firewood tractor. I’d like to get a grapple for it, but for now I have clamp on pallet forks on the QD bucket. QD pallet forks would be nice. I’m building a ballast box that will also kind of be a carry all for the chainsaws, cutting gear and winch.

    Hello I hope that you are blessed as well as your family I wanted to let you know that I really enjoy all of your videos at first I felt like well I was not relating with the way you video but then I realized we have so much in common I grew up in the Berkshires from a family that didn't have much a large family my father worked hard and we had a poultry farm and I couldn't do much at all meaning mechanically inclined so I decided to go to the tech school and I became a master plumber pipefitter steam theater for over 40 years now I'm a retired disabled master plumber pipe fitter gas fitter steam fitter HVAC jack of all trades on top of it my father was a carpenter by trade but a jack of all trades master at nothing I would always watch him and he would always make something happen with little as possible to make the job happen or the chores happen to make something work out of nothing and I see you do that all the time and I subscribed and then I unsubscribed and then I resubscribed and it had to do with the plowing and the tests you did but I just watched this video and I realized that you're a collector well I'm an at avid collector of everything and I don't get rid of anything well recently I have been really wanting a tractor with hydraulics because I bought a lake front property with an old abandoned 38 lot trailer park and I want to make it into a farmstead it used to be an old plantation way back a hundred years ago and I want to go back to that and I'm going to need a tractor with hydraulics and I've done a lot of looking and f***** and I just realized it John Deere is the way to go I collect things and I'm obsessive about it you name it I collect it I'm the black sheep of a family of eight about always always have been wanting more in life on 54 years old and I live in South Carolina and I saw this video where you said if you're looking for this is for sale so I was wondering what you recommend and if you had any thing available for sale I've been using OfferUp I haven't used Facebook marketplace much but I've used Craigslist it used to be PennySaver back in Massachusetts it used to be a magazine called Wheeler dealer and there was a time when I got laid off I was young had a baby girl started life young at 18 got married had a child bought my first house and I needed to make money so I used Wheeler dealer and no exaggeration I had over 100 recreation vehicles and implements in you name it in my backyard and I would fix them up and back then in the '80s you can get stuff for free really inexpensive fix them up and resell them and end up with toys to play with and I was hoping you could die maybe chat with me and bang your heads together in regards to which direction I should go I've been looking at new stuff but I really really enjoy restoring and making old stuff work for me I remember when I was 18 and I couldn't even change the oil on my Toyota pickup truck it was a Toyota pickup truck it was an 85 pickup truck 4x4 and it was a wonderful truck I kept it for 15 years and I had to learn how to fix it and I did everything to it everything I had to learn and it got me hooked now I love to work on things and restore things so I was wondering if we could chat and maybe put our heads together in regards to maybe coming up with some ideas on what would work for me I know you're busy guy and family and all I have a 37-year-old daughter and a 31-year-old son I got two grandchildren and I have a miracle child a two-year-old daughter I'm starting life all over again and I bought this property a year and a half ago and I want to do something with it I have great plans of putting in a pond it's late from property with 38 lots Brooks it's gorgeous and I need a four-wheel drive tractor I have virgin forest and recently some huge huge oak trees have fallen and knock down at least five other big giant I'm talking 4-ft diameter trees over 100 plus feet tall so please get back to me at your earliest convenience and I'd love to chat with you it seems like everything you do is what I learned and at first I thought weird and strange but it's like I do everything that you're doing like the smell of WD-40 yes I really like the smell of WD-40 and I try to make things work out of things that shouldn't even be used for I love seeing your 755 John Deere and I thought about Dy or I should say making a front loader backhoe I have to redo my water line because it's a private drive and I've got close to 300 yd of water line that needs to be dug up and replaced cuz it's old galvanized so I need a backhoe as well so maybe you could help me out with possibly your ideas I love your videos and it takes me back to my childhood days and to present like using your torches and running out of gas speaking of which I've got 14 tanks being a plumber HVAC I've got so many tanks and I make sure that they're full but anyhow a big sigh I'm nervous about asking for help I've always tried to do things myself and read educate myself I'm all about education trial and error if it doesn't work I try to make it work so I hope you find time to get back to me God bless stay safe and I look forward to hearing from you my name is Dale Otto. I live in Greenville South Carolina and I'm starting my homestead thanks and keep making the videos

    I run a 8' pusher on my loader and a 6' blade on the rear of my 33 horse Kubota, and that works great for the type of snow we usually get in central Illinois, my neighbor has a tracked snow blower he hardly ever gets to use. It really just depends on what type of snow you get. I also bought a plow truck this year, further solidifying that there will indeed be no snow this winter, but we will be ready for next winter!

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  Před 3 lety

      You know Philip, before I "found" this blower that I didn't know I wanted, I was going down the path of finding a snow pusher. I think that would be a perfect fit for us here as well in Northern Indiana. We get a wide range of snow events and I think a pusher would be a good fit. I wonder how wide I can go on this tractor. I was flirting with the idea of taking an old 7' straight blade and turning it into a snow box. I can't image it would push it full though is the problem. Probably going to need smaller. Sounds like both of us will be keeping the snowfall at bay with our preparedness this year! Thanks for watching!

  • @johnferris2919
    @johnferris2919 Před rokem +1

    Blower trumps the blade. With a blower that size you can get rid of the snow (blow it anywhere to keep it away from your traffic flow. With the blade you can only push the snow into piles that build over the winter and restrict your traffic flow. The ideal is the blower on the front and a blade on the back. The blade is great for breaking up some hard packed snow so the blower can handle it. The only caution with the blow is learning the durability of the shear pins. I realize this video was 2 years ago, what did you end up doing.

    Hi again Neil, I have the 47" on my 2320. I used to maintain 4 cemeteries with it. Now just several driveways. We used to plow before that. Once i got my big blower i never went back to the plow. Absolutely love the blower. And in the cemeteries the plow was not much faster due to all the extra passes we had to make,,, and that left huge piles of snow.. Not with the blower, that shot the snow well over the stones and we were still able to do winter funerals without having to move those piles. Joe Bee...

    Definitely the snow blower. I have much smaller garden tractors, one with a a snow blower the other with a push blade, the blade will F things up and hide the damage until spring, when you go out and realize how destructive the plow is, creates repair work that wouldn’t otherwise be needed. I’ll use only the snow blower tractor from now on.

    @machone7580 Před 2 lety +2

    Nice work getting that going! I'll bet that beast will move the deep stuff with ease. I call 'em hairpins instead of JC clips. I use a blade and a blower on my X720, just depends how deep the snow is. The blower for my X720 was also an impulse buy, it it had many of the same issues. Got it all fixed up after several (expen$ive) trips to the JD parts counter.

    I have a 855 with a Rear 3 point Blower and that same push Blade on the front. Our Blade has the JD snow extensions on it, both ends and the top . With the MFWD this combo is a snow plowing animal. We live on a older farmstead,and most years in northern Minnesota we see snow to plow. That front Blower is a nice attachment to have in your line up, but for most snow days the Blade will be the quickest way to get the job done.

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  Před 3 lety

      What a great set-up you have there Mike. That sounds like the best all around solution to handle about any type of snow event. I am really doubtful that we will see enough snow events here in NE Indiana to warrant having this blower. I question whether the blade is the right choice though either and now I wonder if I shouldn't think about a snow pusher! All part of the fun! Thanks so much for contributing to the discussion!

I'm trying to picture the eyeroll the wife gave when you came home with the extra impulse buys!! It's always a delicate situation. I have the same problem when buying Golf equipment/clubs. Remember it's always easier to ask forgiveness than permission. Ha Ha! Just kidding....well kinda, but mostly kidding. But I'm like you 100%, easier to ask for forgiveness 😉 I wanted her to comment on this video with "so, when did you get a snowblower?" because she almost literally found out upon the release of the video! Fortunately I have had good luck buying and selling and it usually tilts in my favor enough that she trusts me to be impulsive now, but the eye rolls still persist!

    Ugh Neil, I love and hate your channel at the same time. There's a 755 and an 855 available semi-local, both at $1990 and $2000, 855 comes with a large deck. Your video makes me want to go buy at least one of them. The Deere is always a fun activity. As far as the snow blowing, I won't be needing that for sure, lol. And even if I have other projects going on, the one I just bring home is the most exciting. And you are right about Craigslist, it died (sort of) about a year or so ago and there seemed to be a mass flight to Marketplace. Seems maybe since people were already on Facebook, they sold stuff there too, Idk. That "newer" 755 looks like a beauty man. Neither of the abovementioned ones available here are that nice.

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  Před 3 lety +2

      Lol! I know what you mean! Just when I think I'm "getting over" thinking about something, I'll see someone else working with it and then there I am, back on the hunt. Happens to me with old Ford trucks too. I'll see a nice '79 Bronco and next thing I know I'm on the prowl for Broncos! That sounds like pretty good deals on either of those tractors, especially if 4X4. You can find them in the $2500 range pretty commonly without loaders or 4WD, but then it jumps to $6K usually if a loader is involved and $4K for just the 4X4. And I agree, it is really all about the "hunt" and "sport" of finding a good deal. I love buying and selling stuff but I tend to buy more than I sell! 😬

    Yeah same here, I had a 1973 sears & a JD 212 that needs engine work, wanted another 200 series tractor & found a 216 about 3 hours away for $100 with a deck, & most of the parts. Needs a little help, but the guy said it has compression, so that means there’s no hold in the block, so at least it’s good.
    Worst case I have a spare k301 on a pallet in the barn to throw on it if it is bad.
    My 82 212 has some ring issues, I think I could install the rings with the engine in the tractor cuz the pan can come off while in the tractor.

    I grew up calling your "JC" clips Cotter "keys" as opposed to Cotter "pins". Cotter keys used spring tension to stay in place where cotter pins were bent over as a retaining method. It doesn't mean it was right? It could be a regional thing like the great "Soda" vs. "Pop" debate. Love the video and your sense of adventure fixing the older tools on a very modest buget.

    Neil... you had that hair pin clip upside down... it’s called an R-K clip. The mistake is totally forgivable. Because obviously someone installed it upside down!
    Now about WD-40... my son-in-law bought an old farm truck. It needs a little love. (Well actually, it’ll need prayers, blessings and get well cards before it’s done.).
    At any rate, the first thing to do was to clean it up. His boys spent an afternoon cleaning the inside. The biggest obstacle that they encountered was the adhesive left from the old shade tree mechanic window tint.
    I received a text from one of my grandsons asking me how to remove the glue. He listed all of the chemicals they had tried... Some of which would fry a teenage brain if used in an enclosed space... I texted him to try WD-40.
    He texted back about 30 minutes later and said, “PawPa you’re a genius. The glue is gone.”
    A few days later the boys were in school when, I stopped by hoping to get my first peek at the ‘new?’ Truck. It was in the farm truck hospital... the brakes were needing a transplant, the lights had to have an EKG and the oil needed a colon cleanse and transfusion.
    Son-in-law told me about the truck and described the interior cleaning that the boys had done. As he started describing the window tint, I played dumb and listened. He said, “... came up with the idea of trying WD-40. It worked like magic. He sprayed it on and it scraped right off.”
    I told him, “Yep! He’s a smart boy.”
    I don’t have any experience with snow blowers... our semi-annual significant snow fall is such a pleasure that I wouldn’t dream of having a quick and simple way of digging it out. The bucket loader and rear blade on the BX... without chains... provides me with the full farmlife experience in that winter wonderland!

      R-K clip... I knew I had been calling it the wrong thing all these years. Must have been installed with a left handed hammer! 😂
      What a wonderful WD-40 story. To be honest, I don't know if I would have thought of it for removing window tint. I know there is a whole slew of things that folks use it for nowadays, and they have so many darn variations. I have lots of other spray lubes too. PB Blaster works pretty good; but you know what? I don't like the smell! I really truly don't mind the WD-40 on everything cause at least it doesn't stink. I always keep some handy regardless of whatever other arsenal of snake-oil penetratin' oil is in the cabinet. I use a bunch of it to clean the oil and grease off my concrete floor. Since I don't own a single piece of machinery that doesn't leak I am sure to keep the good folks at WD-40 in business with just my floor swabbing efforts. It will lift dried up oil without removing the concrete sealer and if you rub it around really good it won't even be too slippery.
      Best part of your story was hearing your son-in-law beam at the great WD-40 idea crafted by his boy! What a great PawPa to now spoil it!
      The older I get, the more easily I could easily be talked into a life that had minimal snowfalls in it. As a teen and even into my twenties and thirties I loved the snow. I've been waiting all my life for "the biggie" that has never came. I was only 2 years old for the Blizzard of '78 and I've been waiting for a repeat for so long that I've almost outgrown the interest. I never understood why folks around here went south for the winter... but now I do. Fortunately seeing my daughters enjoy the snow when it comes has reignited my excitement for those first few meaningful snow events. We get to sled and build snow mountains and I'm more than happy to burn a little fuel for those activities!

      @@digdrivediy I found out about removing adhesives with WD-40 many years ago... from a mechanic. We were making store sample box springs and mattresses... you know those small cut away units where you could see through the cover, padding and springs.
      Any way, a limited number of plastic covers were printed in full color photo quality... very expensive, long lead time and a quickly approaching, immobile, deadline.
      When the covers arrived we opened, inspected and counted them. The assemblers came in after lunch. As they were preparing the foam layers their overspray coated the clear plastic side of the covers. (The print ink was on the inside so that it wouldn’t be worn away or abraded during handling.)
      My lead man went into panic mode. He grabbed the worst one and started trying chemicals to remove the adhesive. By the time he called me, he had all but melted it... to no avail.
      I suggested he call the glue adhesive supplier and find out what they recommended. The building mechanic was standing nearby and overheard our discussion. He grabbed a can of WD-40 and said try this. It is what I use to clean up the glue mess every time you guys make samples.
      We did and it worked perfectly. Just spray it on, wait a minute or two and wipe it off with a red shop towel. We then sprayed them with foaming window cleaner and they were pristine!
      Since then I’ve always reached for it when I’m dealing with adhesives. Back when everything you bought had a price label on it... car body side moldings... labels on buckets... you name it, I’ve tried it.
      And like you... I think WD-40 smells good too... perhaps Old Spice will offer it as a body wash fragrance soon!

      I like your way of thinking outside the box. I actually have a big broom that mounts to my 318! It is a Sweepster brand. I haven't used it in quite a few years. It can be hard on the grass if you're not careful. I'm not sure how the leaf/snowblower hybrid would work but that would certainly make a cool video! I've always wanted one of those big leaf rakes that mounts on the front too! Isn't it crazy what we come up with when left to sit around and daydream about this tractor stuff :) I'm all about the "war on leaves"!

    Late to the party. I always called them hair pins, dunno why or where I got it. In my experience snow blower or blade are about the same. When we would blade the yard we always put the piles of snow somewhere we could reclaim the gravel. With a snow blower you can blow it out of the way. We'd always hope for a wind then blow the snow straight up in the air and let the wind take it away. Just watch out cutting to deep or you'll be on marketplace buying new windows for the house 😃

      Haha! So true. I put some special shoes on this blower to help accommodate for the stones. It was just an experiment but it worked great. I held the cutting edge up 1" above the stones and only threw a handful or so. I'll put a check mark down next to "hair pins"! Interesting how so many folks grow up calling them different things! Thanks Kory! Appreciate you watching!

    Hey Neil something else I was going to ask you that didn't scare you the way those hydraulic lines looked to run that old hydraulic fluid in with your new hydraulic fluid??? I've always been curious about that you're the haul fluid sitting in that plow getting mixed in with your transmission fluid

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  Před 3 lety

      I guess I'm not too worried about it really. I suppose if they used the wrong fluid it could be an issue but if just normal hydraulic fluid I think it would be fine since it was sealed up in the hoses and cylinders. That is a good point to think about though. Actually when I first hooked it up I noticed that it was cavitating a little bit so there must have been air in the lines as I would have suspected maybe some of the oil leaked out over time. But to be honest, I have never worried about the oil and never had any problems. Good topic.

  • @robsmith7681
    @robsmith7681 Před 3 lety +5

    My experience with a blower is they are way faster at removing snow, and the do a neater job, but they’re not nearly as much fun to use.
    Also John Deere is good at making things fit specific to certain models, but with a little modification you can make it fit something else. My blade for my jd 400 is specific to 420’s and 430’s but with two grade 8 bolts, it was a easy conversion over, and it’s plenty strong. I built a 54” “plucket” (plow bucket like a 4 way bucket operates) with dual lift rams (good to just about 900lbs lift) and it holds up just fine.
    What did you pay for the blower??? Smoking deal on the tractor already man!!!

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  Před 3 lety +1

      I agree, but I am however looking forward to being in that cab with the blower. Always wanted to try it. I might miss my truck before it's over with!
      That's great that you built the "plucket". I bought all the material to attempt to build one of those for my 54" blade on my 318 way back when. I never followed through with it though. They look like they'd be really handy. The blower wasn't as cheap as I'd have liked even at $600, but I still think it was likely worth it for what I've seen them go for around areas that get good snow. If I could have bought it in the spring would have been much better :) Thanks for the great comment!

    • @robsmith7681
      @robsmith7681 Před 3 lety +1

      I’d let you try my plucket out first if you wanted to before you build. Honestly, it did a lot of work for me, but I ultimately bought a ls mt122. Funny thing is tho, I did a irrigation ditch back in august and took the plucket and the mt122 and ended up using both. You know how equipment is, you have a piece that works, that’s good, if you have 2 pieces that work, that’s really good. 😁 I was gonna sell the 400 after I bought the mt122, but I couldn’t justify selling something I still use from time to time.

    The 755 gives up some horsepower compared to a 750, to power the Hydro, the amount of pto power you have on the 755 is not enough to get the auger spinning fast enough to throw the snow any distance, it will kinda just drop out in front of or off to the side of the chute..if you use the smaller 47 inch blower, it will, throw snow as far as you need it to.. Deep snow=blower. You can only push snow so far. A blower throws it farther than a blade can push. A blade is OK for small snow fall amounts.
