Snowblower Rookie : My First Time With Deere 755 Compact Tractor Using 59" Snow Blower on Gravel

  • The first real snow of 2021 leads me to start prepping the driveway and getting my new to me snow blower ready for use. I take my John Deere 755 compact tractor and make sure that the 59" Snow blower is all ready for my first run at clearing the driveway. This is a new to me John Deere 755 and I bought the 59" Snow blower on Facebook Market Place. Join me as my procrastination catches up with me when I start to get the blower ready and carry out my first time running this machine. Also gonna have some family fun at the end.

    That's a great idea with the pipe to set the driveway markers! Mine are all crooked and "wonky" looking as my girls say.

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  Před 3 lety

      The credit for the pipe trick goes to my father-in-law. He puts his markers in with that pipe and it is the handiest little tool. I was hoping someone would catch onto that and point it out! Thanks so much Build Life!

    • @TheWeekendMedic
      @TheWeekendMedic Před 3 lety

      Agree - that's an awesome idea - one step further - if you put a cap on the top of the pipe, could you drive the marker like a fence post by moving the pipe up and down? Hate those markers with bare hands, fiberglass sucks! :)

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  Před 3 lety +2

      @@TheWeekendMedic I tried a version of that too but it was harder to keep them going in straight when trying to drive them with the pipe. I found it easier to "guide" them if I held the pipe plumb and then hammered them in.

    Bought this for my small back deck in the Eastern Sierra. czcams.com/users/postUgkxoHYZbq5g9fkcAtinlTqstNlje-UQkCHN We get A LOT of HEAVY snow so I was a bit skeptical but it was worth it! After the first storm of the year this has exceeded expectations! It throws snow very well, even 10-12” + that said the more it piles up the harder it is to maneuver the machine. It is exceptionally light weight and overall exactly what I was looking for. If you have a large amount of snow and a lot of area to clear, you may consider something with a drive engine to help maneuverability, but for decks, second stories, roofs etc, you can’t beat the light weight to great snow throwing ratio. Side note, the chute rotator is a bit flimsy and it initially didn’t seem to work, after a few uses it seems to have loosened up.

    I had a 955 years ago with that identical snowblower. But one day I was talking to a guy and he had an older snowplow that he want to get rid of. So I bought it for next to nothing. It was an 8’ - 6” Leo plow so rather heavy. I ended up cutting down the A-frame plow side mount so it wouldn’t hang so far off the front end of the tractor. Then used the loader hydraulics for up/down/left/right. Also had to add a considerable amount of weight on back. Over all it worked rather well but you could tell the tractor was working hard whenever you got into some wet/heavy snow.

    My grandpa lived just down the road from us on top of a hill and had a very steep and long driveway. Many times the milk truck couldn’t make it up in the winter. For snow plowing he used to use a Massey Harris 333 with a rear blade. ( we live in Wisconsin ) We had a bad snow storm and the 333 could not push the snow downhill to clear out the driveway. We lived 1/2 mile down the road and called us. Dad sent me over with the John Deere 140 with a blower and I plowed him out! I’ll never forget my grandpa’s smile on his face as he shook his head watching me crawl along the driveway but I cleaned it out! Once the first cut is in you take 1/2 cuts…. That tractor had the correct single stage blower, yours is a bit big but for lighter snow full cut no issues and in heavy snow 1/2 cuts and adjust speed as needed. Awesome tractors those 55 series. My son has a 2wd 655 and a 4wd 955. That 955 is a beast and a hell of a workhorse for a compact tractor. Glad I ran across your video!

One option to use as skid plates would be a plastic kitchen chopping board, an old trick that I've used successfully on various projects. The pipe idea was great. I use a 12" long drill bit the size of the marker. I drill the hole where I want it, then simply drop the marker in. I have a model 49 blower (with a few mods) on my Deere 140 GT, and a custom 60" blade on my Deere 318 GT. 3" of snow or under = blade, 4" or over = blower. 95% of the time it ends up being the blade here in NE.

    My O’ My,.. so many good ideas to steal here.
    The driveway marker driver is a simple yet effective idea. I’m gonna steal it... but, being a bit lazy. I’m gonna try it with a threaded pipe and cap. Because, my tool drawers aren’t quite so organized and my 2Lb maul is never where it is supposed to be! It works on T-posts. Will it work on fiberglass needles? I’ll have to ‘Circle back’ in that.
    The snowshoes on your blower are essential. Although I’ve never used a snow blower... I did something similar on my box blade with some success.
    I had a conversation with another CZcamsr about gravel getting into the yard when pushing snow. He said he used to con his daughters into raking it out... until they got old enough to realize it was work. So, I told him that I had a paddle brush for my Stihl Kombi unit. I bought it for keeping the gravel off the pavement at the end of my driveway... but, have found it excellent for extracting gravel from the yard as well. Just one word of advice... run it just above idle if you’re wearing shorts and flip flops... or, your buddy’s new Corvette is parked nearby when demonstrating how well it works!
    Now, let’s talk about that cheezy little cab cover. My neighbor has an old beat up Kawasaki Mule. The fenders and wheel wells are held together with duct tape. The tires are worn slick and are in that stage where they barely hold air long enough to make it through the day. The gas cap is a white PVC pipe cap held in place by more duct cap.
    His dog ate half the seat five years ago, when he was a pup. They have been lovingly rebuilt with old burlap bags for stuffing. Their covering is woven polypropylene feed sacks. These work great to shed water. However, they’ll also shed your butt when you hit the brakes or turn the corner a bit too fast.
    The windshield is a chunk of old plexiglass salvaged from a porch window. It came from a demo job he did just to get the window. As you would expect, it has about a hundred holes in the edges for fastening it in place. He is currently using about 6 holes with zip ties in them. The other 94 are where the plexiglass has broken by previous attachment attempts with screws, zip ties and bungees. Because the edges are becoming frail, we’ve been talking that it is time to upgrade the attachment method. He’s going to pickup a roll of Gorilla duct tape on his next trip to town.
    The roof is two pieces of 1/4” interior grade plywood laminated to make a “Hell for Stout” covering. It is held in place with rubber washered roofing screws left over from some job that neither he nor I can remember. He painted it a gorgeous bright yellow using paint left over from his daughters playhouse. Although it is interior grade latex paint, it seems to be holding up pretty good so far.
    So, you can imagine my surprise when he came over a few weeks ago and wanted to borrow my garage to do an upgrade. He said he’d ordered something... I was expecting that he’d gotten in a case of Gorilla tape. But, nope. He had spent the money for a custom after-market cab enclosure!
    He said he looked long and hard to find one that met his budget without having to lower his standards. Then, he opened the box. What he received was a vinyl rear panel and two doors.
    I was relieved to see that it didn’t contain a replacement windshield or roof... because we had spent considerable time and creativity, over the years, modifying our design.... and with it being only one roll of Gorilla tape shy of pure perfection... I had no desire to see the windshield or the top go away!
    Now Neil, you didn’t disclose if your new cab enclosure was OEM or after market... but, after installing his Chinese knock off kit... I have to believe that there is a difference. First of all, we observed that if you ship a vinyl cab covering across the ocean, it shrinks.
    B: The differences in the metric and English measuring systems for angles and radius are significantly different.
    Third, if you put in lengths of Velcro equal to the circumference of the tubing that they wrap around... there is no overlap for hook to loop fastening. Especially when you locate them where the seatbelt mount interferes!
    And D: if you weld the seam where the clear vinyl rear window attaches to the thin black vinyl panel with a blast furnace, it becomes brittle.
    Needles to say, our previous experience with zip ties and rubber washered roofing screws came in handy. And let me just add... we gained a new found love affair when we went got that case of Gorilla duct tape!
    Looking at it afterward... it came to me... it was a thing of beauty. Indeed, my neighbor had came through in his quest to find a cab enclosure within his budget while still meeting his standards!
    Well, I need to clear a spot in the shop so he can pull the Mule inside. It is too cold outside to replace those zip ties in the plexiglass windshield with Gorilla duct tape.... but, that is what is on the schedule this afternoon. Our quest for the perfect mods for the Mule continues.
    I enjoyed your creativity and clever mods on this video. And, because you and a couple of others asked... I posted a short story on my channel.
    Stay warm and keep making those great vids.

      I can relate to your neighbor's zip tied windshield and cab on so many levels... The zip tie is the unsung hero of the fastener world, always in the shadow of duct tape but not to be outdone by super glue. The zip tie is the best kept secret and the natural successor to your grandfather's baling wire. I have zip ties in every vehicle and within several drawers of my tool box. Multiple sizes are required for a wide range of tasks. Number one accessory to the zip tie is the simple pocket knife so one may nip of the tail that remains from your repair work. Number two accessory is the drill bit, which when combined with the zip tie allows broken motorcycle and ATV fenders to be stitched back together with a surgeon like precision. When the plastic becomes weary, a newly drilled hole can quickly provide the next opportunity for mending. Zip ties are my favorite permanent temporary fix.
      Now, you are either incredibly astute or just blindly lucky, but that was in fact Gorilla Tape that I was using to assist the ailing Velcro on that cab. It truly does seem to hold so much better than regular duct tape. I don't even know if regular duct tape exists anymore. There are so many choices I don't know what the right thing is to buy nowadays.
      But the Gorilla tape seems to be holding up to the hype. That is until I left the tractor sit out for a few hours in sub 20F temps. It seems to be losing it's stickiness in the cold. Fortunately I have plenty more where that came from and I like your neighbor, should probably look into the case lot pricing plan so I can fully wrap all the corners and seal up any air gaps on this cab.
      I stopped over and listened to your video story on your channel and enjoyed it very much. I invite anyone that is reading this to do the same. czcams.com/video/qQdlaIlLraQ/video.html

    Bolt some pieces or rubber on the second stage paddles so they have less gap between the outside edge and it will blow the snow farther . Because it's creating more air pressure. I've had my Ford 1720 for 29 years and I have always made it do whatever needed doing. I see all the videos now of guys having much bigger tractors and doing less because it wouldn't be "safe". You just have to be careful, but the 25 hp tractor CAN move a 1500# crate of firewood and get it to where it needs to be on 3 wheels without tipping over. Same goes for a log or a rock or whatever. Also, you don't need the grapple, winch, or forks if you have hooks welded on your bucket and a good 1/4" chain or two or three. You can however stretch a 1/4" chain if you're not careful.

    Just get a manual hand operated wiper blade, not expensive om Amazon, don't have to use it often but useful

    What system are you using for ballast? I like the suitcase weights!

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  Před 3 lety +1

      For this tractor all I have is that weight box that you see with all the little 42 lb suitcase weights. There were 8 weights on the outside and an additional 4 weights in the box. Seems to work pretty well. Wish I had some wheel weights. Thanks for watching.

    Just go find front mount broom. It will take off most of that snow.

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  Před 3 lety +1

      Haha! I can find one in my barn! I actually have a sweepster broom for my John Deere 318, but it wouldn't want to move quite that much snow! I used to take it on snowplowing jobs to clear sidewalks when I plowed commercially. I haven't had it hooked up in many years though now. Thanks for watching!

    Neil, I have at JD750 and I believe I have the same snow blower, that we purchased new at that time from the dealership, what is the model number of your blower?

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  Před 3 lety

      That's cool. This one is a 59" Blower for the 670/770 or 855/955. The one I have might be a little newer model than yours is all. They're still pretty much exactly the same even today. (except for the hitch mounting part)

      Had to have some repairs but back up and running now. Fortunately I had the insurance plan through DJI and they took care of it. I wasn't watching where I was flying!

    A wiper blade can be purchased at covermytractor.com and the splines are the same for your wiper motor. If motor doesn't work try adding a ground wire from motor to the metal part of the cab. Worked for me. Great videos! Thanks.

    Hey Dude! Good video!
    You need tractor tires on that beast..
    Surprised it didn't throw snow further, my 89 JD 318 will throw is 25ft no problem
    Good idea with the driveway markers

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  Před 3 lety

      Thanks! Yeah, I need to investigate more on why it isn't throwing farther. My 318 threw farther as well. The chute is rusty and maybe the flutes are worn. I've thought about tires but honestly, I haven't had a traction problem yet, but it may happen I'm sure. I've got some tire chains too but I hate to go to the hassle..
      That driveway marker idea came from my father-in-law. Works slick!
