- After the Lions lost to the 49ers, head coach Dan Campbell knows he'll get questioned about two 4th down attempts -- but he stands by them. "It's easy in hindsight, I get that, but I don't regret those decisions."

Bills fan here. Been on the wrong side of a lot of these types of losses over the years. Wishing Lions fans a quick recovery. It will take some time but just know that you’re in great hands with Dan Campbell. Class act and every answer was from his heart. Would love to play for him if I was a player. Go Bills. Go Lions. 👍🏻
1957…. Watching the Lions game … with my dad … dad said , be careful son … they’ll break your heart !
2024 … I’ll be 74 soon .
Why would he say they’ll break your heart after winning a championship in 1957?

Hell of a coach. Hell of a team. LIONS!
Hold your head up high, coach. You've done great this season. Couldn't of asked for a better season. Love this group.
Except that his DUMB decisions, COST the LIONS the game
@@johnclaba1457 nope. 3 big time drops changed the game. Both of reynolds drops should’ve been catches for first downs on both 3rd and 4th down. Also the interception that bounced off the defenders face mask. Going for it on 4th got us here.
@@monkeyman9856 Ummmm you can keep your head up your ass all you want....I could care less. What doesnt change by you keeping your head up your ass is that Campbell had TWO OPPORTUNITIES to put a total of 6 points on the board via field goals....These weren't 50-60 yard field goals....They were very makeable SHORT field goals......so when non dumbasses who know how to count and add, see that the Lions lost by 3 points....when they very well would have had 6 additional points....tells SMART people that the coach made bad decisions. I get that you want to keep your status as the #1 Lions Homer.....but that doesnt change what people like me saw yesterday during that debacle.
@@monkeyman9856 drops fumbles turnovers are apart of the game why do you think Brandon Staley was fired for Jim Harbaugh coaching matters. Do you think Tom Brady wanted to throw a picksix in the Superbowl no Trevor Lawrence threw 4 interceptions and still won the game. Dropped "catchable" passes by Lions' Receivers during 3rd and 4th down was what cost them momentum in the 3rd and 4th quarter and ultimately the game.
It was the failed 4th down no kick that turned the tide. Mcdc is foolish for that
You mean #8? That guy murdered you guys tonight! Dropped 4th down catch for first down and dropped 3rd down catch that hit him in the 8. Cut him tomorrow morning.
@@tjmckenzie4048 , if Reynolds makes those catches, then Dan is a genius. Hate to make comparisons but KC made the catches they needed to make and so did the Michigan Wolverines when they were trying to tie the game with Alabama. Winners make the plays they need to make during adverse situations. Reynolds doesn't need to be cut. He needs to make sure it doesn't happen again and learn from it. JJ McCarthy learned from his QB mistakes after being shocked by TCU.
You hit the nail on the head, that bonehead decision to go for it instead of taking the point changed the whole momentum of the game @chickengenius4202

Thanks to you and the guys, coach dan, what a season!
It was a great sseason that provided us with more than we ever expected. No blame.
I've lived through such horrible Lion's seasons where the game was already over in the first 20 minutes of play. I'm just glad that we have a team that will be fun to watch on Sunday's for at least the next few years. Thanks Lions and fellow fans who made this such a great season. I could barely go anywhere this year with any Lion's apparel on without someone wanting to strike up a conversation about the team or yell GO LIONS from 25 feet away. Went to 4 games this year (the most for me in a long time) and high-fived lots of strangers. Tough to lose this one like we did, but what a great season overall.
Ya and we have also lived through games that were right there lol 😆 last 20 years comes to mind?
They might never recover from this.😂😂
@@coryvallad7578 Oh I agree (if I am understanding you correctly). This was gonna sting either way if we lost, but the way we lost, it stung a lot more.

very true but I think it is very unlikely, just like Pete Carol never did for his horrible decision to pass the ball on the goal line in the Super Bowl, he never regretted it, lost the trust of his players ..never recovered after that ...coaches have to take accountability for their horrible calls
Thanks for the great season guys, looking forward to next year hoping I get those season tickets. Being a Lions fan my whole life I never had a year like this, so I've never experienced such a crushing moment as this one, but still just an amazing year.
For all of you couch coaches- SHUT UP - without Dan and Brad we would have never got this far! I have followed the team since 68 and this is the best team in my lifetime. We will get back here next year - One Pride!!!!
He is a FANTASTIC coach and he has done more for this franchise than any other coach. He reminds me a lot of Sean McDermott of the Bills (I'm a lifelong Bills fan). He has changed the culture and instilled a winning attitude. But he has made some absolutely HORRIFIC sideline decisions (like McDermott) that has cost his team dearly. When they were penalized on the 2 pt play against Dallas and he still went for it from the 7... that was a terrible braindead decision. Twice tonight he didn't take fgs when fgs would've won the game. The first one would've put them up three scores, 27-10. The second one would've tied the game.
I'm sorry, he's a great coach, but he blew it today.
He shouldnt be calling plays. Coach the players, sure. But leave the fourth down play calling to someone else.
Dumbest coach in the history of the playoffs. His job isn't to get you to the NFC Championship. It's to get you to the Super Bowl. Not to do the same dumb things he survived doing in the regular season in spite of himself. Those decisions cost his team a SB appearance. And a rigid mind is a stupid mind.
I agree with you on Brad. We have the GM and the QB. Now we need the coach. Tonight proves Campbell is not the coach we need. You know who wouldn't have coached us out of this game tonight?................Bill Belichick. Jussayin
They lost because of Dan..deal with it
Playoff points are hard to come by. To risk 3 points is a bad decision. Period.
The case can be made from Dan, I can hear that…But the Lions had to live with the bad side of risking going for it.
To me, it’s inconsiderate on behalf of your team since every yard is so much more difficult in the playoffs.
Bad coaching call from an otherwise great coach.
Dan even mentioned how hard it is to get to this game. All the more reason why going for it over taking the points is such a blunder.
Dan is an idiot
it would be nice to see him take sum accountability this loss is %100 on him.
He gave away 6 points and good field position.
@@chrisbranciere2747 not to mention the entire momentum of the game
I definitely agree with this he is wrong for that the team played great and he didn’t reward them with the field goals like he should have

That's how you lose a game...it's a team game and it's a team outcome, win or lose. SF made the plays when it mattered, Lions didn't. It was the perfect storm of a bad half, execution wasn't there, and bounces didn't go their way. Couldn't have written a more Lions loss, really.
Well yeah...Always finding a new way to lose is their specialty. Always.
They have to prove to me they're championship caliber. They still haven't.

The Marine Corps taught me what coach Campbell teaches his players... TOUGHNESS, DISCIPLINE, TEAMWORK among other factors. As for the Lions, nothing to be ashamed of... nothing but pushing forward and learning from your mistakes. They gave their hearts out on that field! Hats off to the Niners and their fans. We are all still Lion proud! Thank you coach Campbell for an awesome season. From a Vietnam Era Marine Corps veteran.

He second guessed himself on a few of those plays, so he has to live with that. IMO. Thanks for your comment. From a Vietnam Era Marine Corps veteran.
That was as gut-wrenching a loss as I’ve ever suffered in my 30 years as a Detroit sports fan. But it doesn’t make me any less proud of this team nor does it dim the brightness of their future. We fans always wanna pin a loss on one singular play or person, whether it’s MCDC and the coaching staff, Goff, the defense, etc. But the bottom line is they lost this game as a collective unit. A couple missed throws by Goff, numerous drops, a million missed tackles, some questionable decisions by Dan, the near-pick by Vildor that went off his face mask and turned into a 50 yard gain, the Gibbs fumble…the list goes on. They didn’t deserve to win in the end. San Fran made all the big plays down the stretch and that’s why they’re heading to the Super Bowl and our season is over. But the Lions will learn from this as an organization. Players will come back hungrier, Campbell will continue to grow as a coach, and Brad will make the necessary upgrades at the positions of need. These guys are just scratching the surface and I fully expect we’ll be back next year in a better position to win it all.
To Coach Campbell and all his assistants, Brad Holmes, Chris Spielman, Sheila Hamp and every single man who donned a Lions jersey this year: thank you for one hell of a season.

That's incorrect. That was their only shot. Losing cities take decades to come back. Dan Marino never had a second chance.
@@smartmaxwell9017 Dan Marino didn't have a squad like we do!!
@@smartmaxwell9017 yeah ok bud. This was year 3 of a rebuild. Virtually every corner stone of the team is under the age of 25. Goff at 29 is still considered pretty young for a QB especially considering he doesn’t rely on athleticism whatsoever. Losing BJ and Glenn may be tough but this organization has built a winning culture and will likely bring in guys who fill those positions without too much being lost.
Overall your take is incredibly lazy and lacks any real analysis other than bs tropes regarding the history of the franchise (which has clearly been on an upward trend since Sheila took over for her incompetent parents).
Have a good one.
@@josephcaudill4722 dan Marino had 3 times the squad with the marks brothers and a smart coach. Detroit has a WWE wrestler for a coach.
Love the take. Go Lions - a heartbreaker, but yeah as our ship rises together so it falls. Even after such a wonderful season, sports fans always wanna have their reactionary takes and have a way to explain everything. It’s never so simple. I appreciate the thought out response, and believe it’ll be up from here.
In the playoffs you take points when you can get them.
Thank you Coach Dan and the rest of the crew and Brad Holmes this has been a remarkable season and I know we're going to have many more to come!!
The Niners are thanking Dan Campbell as well. Shanahan is probably still chuckling about how stupid those fourth down calls were.
Ask Falcons fans about the good years after blowing it because of the coaches play calling. The players have all offseason to hear how the coach screwed up and next season in-house fighting could do the same to Lions as the Falcons.
You cannot gamble in such a big and important game.
This is the kind of coach I played for in the late 70's. Loves his player's till the end. The LIONS are the best they have ever been with him. A true leader of men. If it was easy, everyone would do it. Go Coach Campbell and go LIONS

I’m sorry coach but you blew this one
Hey Dan, KICK FIELD GOALS TO EXTEND YOUR LEAD.
Dan...you lost because you didnt take the POINTS !!!. like Madden always said...take the POINTS...especially on the road !!!
I believe we can be better next year. This was tough as hell, but this is a young team with a lot of talent. Let's see what Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell cook up this off season.
He should regret those decisions because they cost his team the game and a chance at the Superbowl. Kicking a field goal when you're down by three is something that a 10 year old would think was a good idea. What an absolute fool.
That’s just not true. They were 17/22 on 4th with 3 or less. 2/2 in the post season. They both were catchable balls. The players just failed to connect.
He coached the game the same we He coached the entire season. If they would have converted on the 4th downs everyone would be saying how brilliant He was for going for it on 4th down. As a Packers fan, I can say one thing, the NFC North will be one of the toughest divisions in football next year.

He should regret passing on points up 2 scores on the road in the second half of a championship game. You have to coach differently in those situations. It's not about analytics or what you've done all season. It's about resetting momentum in a zero-sum game
Same old Lions. This coach gambles a lot and it showed in this game. Campbell gave 6 points away. Thanks coach. See you guys in 58 years.
But why gamble late in 3rd quarter when you can be up by 3 scores? And then do it again knowing you could have traded touchdowns for field goals and bleed out the clock that late in the game...
Not kicking FGs cost you a super bowl appearance. Let that sink in.

his ballsy 4th down calls are part of the reason the lions did so well this season
The game was very winnable. But for dropped passes, missed interceptions, freaky lucky bounce (49rs), regrettable 4th down calls, this would easily have been a win for the Lions if JUST ONE of those things went our way. That said.......I am thrilled by the Lions this year and this is a year to celabrate as a fan. THE LIONS MADE IT TO THE NFC CHAMPIONSHIP and did not get blown away. They are were a REAL CONTENDER. And I really feel that if they would have won, a Super Bowl victory would have been VERY POSSIBLE. Thank you Lions for a great year. At 60, having grown up with annual disappointment, this year still doesn't seem real.
Campbell made some stupid decisions.
Yeah if just one thing in my life went right I’d be a millionaire, but it didn’t, so I’m not. There ain’t no ifs , buts, and maybes- yall lost because of a bad coaching decision, not because a “what if”?

You should regret not taking points. You gave them the momentum. It wasn't in hindsight. EVERYONE who knows anything about football was asking WTF and there you go with your EGO.
Love how people say, "take the points" as if the Lions kicking game is automatic. They have the worst FG kicking unit in the league.
Actually Badgley was 18 of 21 from 40-49 yds since 2021. I didn't remember him kicking for my Colts in 2021, but we're a dome team too so I'm sure a lot of those were inside. Still though? 27-10 and they keep all momentum and it's not like Purdy won't panic and throw it up for grabs now and then. GB dropped 2 right in the middle of their chest. First was a pick-6.
Dan Campbell saying he just felt really good about them converting it's just freaking ridiculous. I hope he's just saying it for the cameras and really deep down inside realizes he made a huge mistake. When you're trying to get to the Super Bowl and you're less than a quarter and a half away from going to the Super Bowl, you kicked the field goal and squash all the momentum and all the confidence and all the hopes of the 49ers. You have to look at the situation, at that time the momentum was still in the Lions favored because they just stopped the 49ers from scoring a touchdown and made him kick a field goal which I guarantee that Kurt the confidence of the 49ers cuz at that point in time they probably thought there was nothing they can do to get back into the game because the lions were just dominating. Then when they saw the Lions about the score field goal they probably were really losing confidence realizing they were going to go back down three possessions again but this time half of the third quarter was already gone so they would have started pressing the sense of urgency would have started coming up they probably would have made a mistake by the time they came back down the field and scored again I guarantee the third quarter would have been nearly over by that time Dan needs to really check himself cuz he gambled when he didn't need to. I understand taking risks and gambling but don't do it when you don't have to especially in a game like this when you're Super Bowl hopes are on the line

The decision to run the ball on third down and goal with a minute to go and waste a timeout also was a game killer. If they score with 55 seconds left and three timeouts, they could kick deep and get the ball back and tie the game. Taking that timeout pretty much ended the game.
This is also on top of the terrible 4th down decisions
Agreed.
Nah that wouldn’t have helped. 55 seconds still isn’t enough cause once they kneel and burn it down, it’s hardly enough time to take back a kick off. Problem was not taking the FG to tie the game
@@Joseph-tl5nw If you have three timeouts with 55 seconds left, the 9ers would've had to punt with 40 seconds left from their own 25. That's plenty of time in this league to get into fg range.
Agree 100% ....also 4th and 2 just kick the damn field goal and let the defense do its job..also the many dropped passes in the 2nd half killed them...
I’m sure the 4th down decisions were based on the ease with which SF was moving the ball. Trading FGs for TDs wasn’t going to get it done
He was supposed to change the loser culture in Detroit and pissed it all away 😂😂😂😂😂 just kick the dammmm field goal!!
“I was playing to win” -Roy McAvoy
DC you pissed away 6 possible points, its gotta stop.
In games like this you take every point, just don't keep a kicker and go for 2 every touchdown.
Its just sad.
This loss hurts bad but, the Lion's did not us down, they gave us memories over this past season that will be etched in our heart's and minds forever. These guy's did fantastic and we couldn't be more proud.
Ok, why is Dan not copping to the 2 bad decisions to pass on a field goal? If they make both, they would have won, if they made one, they would have tied in regulation. But this does not detract from the remarkable season that the Lions achieved. They will keep getting better. These rough playoff losses are what make a team strong. The 49ers have a LOT of playoff experience, and that was what gave them the edge. Lions did exceed expectations.
They played the same way all season and that’s what got them to that. Don’t be a Monday morning QB. They did awesome just didn’t work out for them this time.
@@koda1963 unbelievable 24 to 10 in the 3rd quarter with a chance to go the Superbowl. Why didn't dan kick the field goal to tie the game why answer that. Yeah its a make or miss league didn't even the kicker a chance to make or miss but listen carefully if makes the field goal you go up 3 scores there's no such thing as a 17 point play SOL losing games you should have won blaming everyone but Dan Gamble. Brandon Staley was fired for Jim Harbaugh why because coaching matters
He might not regret decisions but I sure do. A Super Bowl appearance hanging in the balance you gotta take the points.
Bad enough what Dan Campbell did to us Lion fans, but now he spits in our faces by saying he doesn’t regret it.
Exactly!!! That idiot made TWO colossal errors
Never take points off the board on the road! ESPECIALLY in the playoffs! He fuc$ed up, period!
What did he do to us?? lead this city and team to a NFC championship game? GTFO with that nonsense. While we’re at it let’s fire him and resign Patricia
@@chadrpool what did he do to us? He single-handedly cost us the Super Bowl AND THEN said he doesn’t regret it.
He doesn't have to regret it, but he better learn from it.
I am a Packer fan and was one of the ones criticizing you for those fourth down calls. My mind has changed. You're a good coach and you made those calls because at the moment you sought it with a right call. If they would have made one of them it would have been different. It always comes down to one or two plays. You had a good year. Looking forward to playing against you twice next year good luck
I can honestly say his family regrets it, his team, his bosses and paycheck signers, the fans of his city, etc… And THAT is the harsh reality of being a leader. Respect to DC for standing by his decisions. I think it his heart of hearts, he knows the first FG should have absolutely been taken. It’s was a near gimme, and makes it a three possession game. I KNOW he will contemplate how they could have better managed themselves on the BAL 2 with a minute left. That I know. DC is a huge reason for why everyone listed earlier even had the opportunity of looking forward to this game and this spot.
The wins are always the toughest games to lose. That’s the truth. To Dan Campbell, I’d point out that hindsight’s 20/20. I’d let this particular hindsight sink in quite a bit this offseason if I were him. When the football gods are telling you it’s not a good time to get cute, you heed.
Dan Campbell needs to spend ALL offseason playing Madden.
For those that don’t know, Madden is basically a flight simulator for football game management.
There’s a reason most good HC’s today are 40 y/o or younger. We’re the first generation to grow up playing Madden. Give me a 17 pt lead at the half and I’m letting my sister play defense while I make a snack.
I've been hearing things about "he's been doing it all season and it's what got him here" ... but the difference between a good coach and a great coach is knowing when to take your foot off the gas. This was driven by pure ego, he didn't respect the 49ers at all, because it didn't just happen once.. it happened TWICE. You don't do that in a fucking title game. You take the free points and you don't just drain your whole squad of momentum making them feeling like they're behind.
He killed us
We shall be bigger, better and stronger for this
The Lions still played a Great Game! No shame in losing a playoff game. At least they scored 31 points. I am still proud of the Detroit Lions. Best of luck to them next season.
The shame is blowing a 17 point lead and forever inscribing it in NFC Championship history as the largest blown lead in NFC Championship history.
The Lions lost the game because the receivers could not catch air all 2nd half. Dan is still the reason the lions got to this point in the season. Great Coach stand Tall!
Did that same thing in the season not learning from your mistake dan time to wake up
This just reminds me of the michigan wolverines before they won the national championship. This is a really good team, and the front office just got the most important thing experience. This experience will take this team to the next level
Go Lions!!
As rams fan this was a very good games lion & 49ers very very tough game lions coming back all the way to super bowl next time. good job coach❤❤
I regret those missed FG attempts Dan. Its the same shit. Lions do incredible in the first half only to bungle it in the 2nd.
Note to the lions take the field goals and we make the super bowl anyone can send out the kicker in fg range goaline 4th downs are tougher calls
The future looks so bright
When Eminem said to lose yourself in the moment. He didnt mean it like that
Great season MCDC. Go Lions!
We’ll get there next Year!!! Go Lions!!!! 🏈🏈🏈
Still love you Dan!! Thank you for all you did for Detroit 😊
The near interception off the DBs helmet for a SF reception was ominous.
The punt that they couldn't down at the 1 was critical.
Yeah but the foolish decisions for going for it on 4th down twice was the nail in the coffin
This is the weirdest but most intense game I’ve seen! Never had I ever seen a coach go for it on both 4th down! Campbell gave me the chills as a niner fan! My heart and cholesterol level went up and my hair has so much static from Campbell gutsy calls! Much respect to the lions
If you’re aware of hardest to get here, why would you go for it on fourth down? Two times. You could’ve kept the pressure on them kicking that first field goal making it 17. So you obviously don’t know. Lol
Ego
Narcissistic
Prideful
As a bears fan I was rooting for you guys. I think Campbell is a hell of a coach but that was bad not kicking those field goals. It’s not high in sight, it was obvious in the moment that’s what he shoulda done. We’ll see you next year lions
The win against Green Bay gave them INCREDIBLE momentum going into this season. This loss? They will have very little momentum going into next season. Losses like this put hexes on teams.
That’s an absolutely stupid thing to say
