Super Mario World (SNES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

- A playthrough of Nintendo's 1991 platformer for the Super Nintendo, Super Mario World.
This playthrough shows a "full clear" of all 96 stage exits.
By 1991, Super Mario was no longer merely a popular game series. It had become an institution, and with five major hits under his belt (four on the NES and one on the Game Boy), gamers were eagerly anticipating the icon's next starring role.
Just eighteen months after the record-breaking US release of Super Mario Bros. 3, Nintendo's shiny new 16-bit system hit store shelves just in time for the holiday season. But given the incredible success of the NES, what could the company possibly do to convince the masses that the Super Nintendo was a worthwhile investment?
Mario, of course.
A new Mario game designed from the ground up to take full advantage of the new hardware was exactly what they needed. A game that couldn't have been done on the aging 8-bit NES. A game that would make people ooh and aah over the state-of-the-art graphics and stereo sound. A game that would introduce new game mechanics. A game that could keep players absorbed for years-on-end with its bottomless well of content.
And instead of selling it separately from the new console, it was included as the pack-in game, along with two controllers, right from day one. Nintendo understood their audience well, and the console was immediately a hit.
Super Mario World was a worthy successor to Super Mario Bros. 3, and it was also a tantalizing look at what the next generation of video games would bring.
After toppling Boswer's empire in Super Mario Bros. 3, the crew travels to Dinosaur Land for a well-deserved bit of R&R, but the peace doesn't last for long. Not only has Toadstool gone missing, but Dino Land's indigenous Yoshis have also been disappearing at an alarming rate, and it doesn't take long to realize that Mario's arch-nemesis is once again up to his old tricks.
Super Mario World is divided up into seven themed areas, each containing several stages, much like what we saw in Mario 3. This time, however, the path was far less linear. Of the game's 72 unique stages, 24 of them include a secret exit, and taking one of these secret exits would open up a brand new pathway on the world map. These paths might allow you to circumvent a few levels, provide an access point to a secret area, or even open the way to the fabled Star Road.
Switch palaces were introduced, too. These switches turn the hollow outlines of colored squares into blocks that Mario can walk across, opening up previously unaccessible areas within many of the game's stages.
Mario also gains the ability to fly indefinitely thanks to the new cape power-up. Unlike Raccoon Mario, Caped Mario can keep himself aloft by using his cape like a glider, allowing for a ton of freedom in exploring the huge stages.
Super Mario World's most beloved addition to the series, however, has to be Yoshi. Once Mario frees Yoshi from an egg, he can saddle up and gain access to new abilities. Yoshi can eat apples for lives, points, and time bonuses, swallow troublesome enemies, and can even get superpowers by gulping different color Koopa shells.
Everything is held together by the same magic as the previous Mario games, and though World didn't represent quite as dramatic of a gameplay shift from SMB3 as SMB3 did over earlier games, it still felt fresh and innovative, and its mechanics were polished to a spit shine.
And the game was once again catered to players of all skill levels. Yoshi's Island provides a nice, gentle introduction to the mechanics, and Boswer's Valley is happy to gobble up your extra lives. But for the players that still wanted more, the Special Zone was a true test of skill.
Even though I found SMW generally easier than SMB3, the Special Zone stages make SMB3's harder levels look like a cakewalk in comparison. They're full of sadistic controller-smashing moments, and I'd be surprised if the Tubular stage wasn't the main inspiration for the Kaizo hacks that used to be so popular. It took me so long to learn those stages well enough to not die constantly as I went through them!
I can still remember how good it felt when I saw "YOU ARE A SUPER PLAYER!!" for the first time as a kid!
Many people have asked me to record this one over the years, and since it's the series' 35th anniversary this month, it seemed about time.
Super Mario World was a fantastic game, and in my personal opinion, it was the last of the "S-tier" 2D Super Mario games. There were no crying babies, no ugly prerendered sprites, no "bwa bwa" singing flowers. It was an outstanding example of classic 2D game design that offered meaningful design improvements over the previous games while still feeling fresh and exciting.

Many of you have requested this one over the years, so finally, here it is. Mario's first 16-bit game is still one of the best in the entire series!
Thanks Nintendo!
I agree
Agreed!
It's also the biggest-selling SNES game, with 20,610,000 units sold.
Thanks mate nostalgia chart off the richter
Another classic in the Super Mario series that one could play forever and enjoy!
The best of all IMO!
@@nevg21Have It?
Honestly, my favorite Mario game of all time. Could play it forever, and probably will.
Mario 3 was my first impactful Mario experience but this game was by far the most influential. The amount of secret stuff was mind blowing. It was like an endless treasure hunt.
"There were no crying babies"
Dang, someone doesn't like Yoshi's Island. It was one of my favorite games
My first SNES game. Happy 35th Super Mario.
Not only is this perfect for Super Mario's 35th Anniversary, it's also ready for the big 3-0 of Super NES.
From Mario 3 on NES to Super Mario World on SNES and then Mario 64, Nintendo out did themselves with those three games on those consoles. The Leaps and Bounds each game took on those respective systems were incredible.
doesnt get much more nostalgic than this for me.
Not only that the original Mario World is good, those ROM hacks of the game are very creative. I've been collecting Super Mario World hacks since high school and they're still fun to play to this day.
My Favorite SMW hack is the one that recreates the beta version of this game.
Super Mario World is honestly the best 2d Mario game in my opinion
@Kirbylight2 the only mistake is that the Castles of the Koopalings and the Fortresses cannot be replayed during the same game (after you save). And also that Yoshi cannot enter inside the Castles, Ghost Houses and Fortresses. Other than that, Super Mario World is superior to Super Mario Bros 3 if only for the fact that there is Yoshi (although there are less power-ups)
@@vados8500 the castles can be replayed. Just hold R and L at the same time and then press Start
My favourite game of all time
A classic that makes you want to find every secret in the knooks and crannies. So cool when you discovered the Special World for the first time.
I know, right? It blew my mind as a kid.
its hard to find the red switch palace
And then immediately bang your head against the wall while trying to beat Tubular.
Then your friend discovers that if you sit on the Special World map screen for a bit, the theme to the original SMB plays, with steel drums. Then he shows it off to you, and you go "Woooow, that's cool". Mind you, I was in high school when both the Genesis and SNES came out, the Genesis wowed me, but the SNES blew my mind.
Yeah.
I'm playing this game in this moment with the Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World
Very good👍👍
Good luck in the lost levels
Oh yeah, I forgot it also came as part of All-Stars. The copy we had of All-Stars only included 1-3 and Lost Levels.
@@NintendoComplete i still envy u that u beated final fantasy VII without miss, i don't have time to play it plus my memory card got corrupted so i want your powers and beat any game without raging
One of the greatest games of all time even today.
Go, Mario! Still a phenomenal game!
The almighty MASTERPIECE,one of the best VIDEOGAMES ever created!
NO CAP!
Man that game is the reason i play video games^^
Best game ever^^
This is the game that started it all, for me.
That's pretty much all there is to say.
So, this is your first Mario game? I guess it's probably the best starting point of the original 4 games. It really is much easier than SMB3
I played Mario games since the beginning.
Indeed, it is my _very first video game_ as far as I can remember, playing this classic since I was practically a baby, or at least old enough to hold a controller, ha ha. Ah, the SNES, it may be the greatest console era for games. Good times.
To commemorate the video game's 30th anniversary in Japan........
And the 30th Anniversary in North America in 2021.
I have the game at home somewhere. It’s been long since I played this game and I gotta say that’s a good part in my CHILDHOOD. 👍❤️
I play this game anyday in my actual SNES. Such a great start on the system, givin it was 1990. Best Mario platformer if not counting All-Stars.
I've seen and played this game through so many times, I'm not gonna not click and watch the whole thing! Thanks for postin' this lad!
1:16:28 it went with the music! Lmao
God I love that game, actually that's my first Mario game when I was kid. I never have the NES just the SNES then the N64 console and those were the only consoles I played. This game is one of the best Mario games I ever played and has great challenges, awesome boss fights, secret levels, and all other things in this game.
Awesomeness
Man you're busting secrets that I didnt even know about and I've played this game many times since it came out when i was old enough to try to play video games. And you're clearing them faster than I am. I knew a number of secrets but man...nicely done!
By the way, when you did the 1st Donut Land board...at the end, you COULD have gotten the secret key as it is possible to get that even without the block wall to run up on. Its just harder without the wall. It just requires getting some flight to accomplish it and good timing.
The best game ever. Well i love supermario land too gbc
The year is 2020, I have played Super Mario World for the first time
I was not ready for how absolutely spectacular this game was, easily one of my all time favorite Mario games, they do so much with the level design, Mario wrecks castles in the most entertaining ways, I found a lot of enjoyment in the setting & above all else, gods did I fall in love with the cap power up & movement as a whole with this game
I also learnt I absolutely suck at 2d Mario

What a great time back in the day, I like every bet of the game and still today’s
Thanks! You bring so many childhood memories back. ☺
*_Super Mario World_* for the Super Nintendo. Hell yeah, this game is awesome!
It takes what makes the previous game great, while adding some neat additions, like the *_"Switch Palaces"_* that create blocks to aid you in various levels via powerups or avoiding obstacles like "Thwimps", it introduces the universally loved *_"Yoshi"_* to the franchise, and in a neat way in which I'll get into more detail about later on, it's the first Mario game to have a "reserved powerup" system, the best level design in the original 4 Mario games (In my opinion, at least), and *THE BEST CONTROL IN A MARIO GAME, EVER* .
In my childhood, I had both the American & Japanese releases of *_Super Mario World_* . After playing *_SMB3_* a bunch, I couldn't *wait* for this game any longer. So, I got Japanese *_SMW_* alongside the vastly superior looking *_Super Famicom_* . And I, since then, have lots of memories of playing the SFC version in Japan while watching lots of *_Chibi Maruko-chan_* . It was the best of both worlds! A great game, and a great anime series!
(😡 *_It STILL pisses me off that PAL & Japanese gamers had the colorful face buttons on the controller, and, unsurprisingly so, Americans got ripped off! Just 2 shades of Purple!? How lame!?_* ).
Anyway, my hype for *_SMW_* was well worth it. It's now one of my top 10 favorite SNES games of all-time...
1. *_Chrono Trigger_*
2. *_MOTHER 2_* ( _EarthBound_ )
3. *_Yoshi's Island_*
4. *_Super Mario World_*
5. *_Twinbee: Rainbow Bell Adventure_*
6. *_Super Castlevania IV_*
7. *_Super Mario Kart_*
8. *_Sailor Moon: Another Story_*
9. *_Contra III_*
10. *_The Legend of the Mystical Ninja_*
Honorable Mentions:
1. *_F-Zero_*
2. *_Kirby Super Star_*
3. *_Gradius III_*
4. *_Sparkster_*
5. *_Pop'n Twinbee_*
Whether it's my childhood SNES/SFC or my SNES Classic/SFC Mini, I *always* make sure to play this one to 100% completion. I love going for all 96 exits in this game. Even with a friend, it's a blast.
Also, the commercial for this game is so cheesy, that it's so awesome to look back on for me.
*_"IT'S A BIT MORE EXCITING! A BIT MORE COLORFUL! ... A BIT COOLER! A BIT WEIRDER! A BIT MORE MARIO! A BIT MORE WHAT YOU WANT! ..."_*
Let's analyze this 16-Bit blast to the past!
POSITIVES
• *Colorful Graphics* (This game sure nails that island aesthetic to a tee! It's a launch title, so it's not one of the *greatest* looking SNES games ever, but it still looks great to this day. Such a wide array of colors here.)
• *MORE. CATCHY. MUSIC!!!* (😊 *_"GOD DAMMIT, KONDO-SAN!" WHY MUST YOU MAKE SUCH MEMORABLE SONGS IN THESE GAMES!? IT'S INSANE!"_* )
• *The HEAVENLY Controls* ( 😢 [Perfection] *_"This is it! The blank has been filled from all these years!"_* . Seriously, though. Mario controls so tight in this one, that it's mind boggling to me the *_"New Super Mario Bros"_* don't replicate this game's controls. The floatiness is perfect! The acceleration is perfect! It's just incredible!! I know *exactly* where my jumps will take me, and I don't have to worry about finicky jumps or rapid acceleration rates.)
• *The New, and then skinny, Dinosaur in town* (Along your journey, you come across a dino named "Yoshi" who Mario can hitch a ride on. Yoshi, in addition to being great in enemy combat, has abilities to use via eating Koopa shells. Red ones are fireballs, Blue ones give Yoshi temporary flight, Green ones are just projectiles that must be spat out, and Yellow ones give Yoshi a short ranged ground stomp. it's not anything amazing (Hell, the Yellow ones aren't useful for attacking enemies, and the Green one is just a projectile that has no real ability to it), but I'll give Nintendo some effort in the variation amount here. And even more effort for Yoshi's redesign since *_Yoshi's Story_* . The original skinny one just doesn't say, *_"I'm Yoshi!"_* to me. The current design of Yoshi does that, and in a cute way, might I add. Sadly, no iconic voices from Yoshi in this game... *_"Yoshi!"_* )
• *The Cape Feather* (This is one of the series' best powerups, far none. It's essentially a more robust Super Leaf. Mario can fly with it by rhythmically tapping the opposite direction that Mario if flying in (Not as complicated as it sounds, thankfully), and has an *USEFUL SWIPING ATTACK!* It's overpowered, since you can literally fly over most levels in the game ( *_"Scratch that! It's a P-Wing"_* ), but you can't help but love this thing. I remember as a kid playing this game, I'd always sing the Superman theme when Mario was flying. It's silly, but it's something that I like to look back on when playing SMW.)
• *The Level Design* (The previous games were designed greatly so, but I personally think that this game nicely complements Mario & Yoshi's abilities. It's to the point where I think that this game was the best of the original 4 Mario games in terms of level design with SMB3 close by.)
• *It Has 90+ Levels* ( 90% of them are solid, too. I'll complain about the other 10% in a moment, since given how bullsh** *_"TUBULAR"_* is, it's better suited for the NEGATIVES section.)
• *Good Final Boss* (The previous games were not *bad* with their end bosses, but rather underwhelming. I really like fighting Bowser in this game, since it has a nice strategy to it. Time those Mecha-Koopa tosses just right, and BAM! He's out for the count, again!)
• *Some Minor Things* (The Bongos when riding on Yoshi, the Co-op lives system, the new foes you face (😐 *_"Chargin' Chuck is a Football Player! A FOOTBALL PLAYER AS AN ENEMY!? As a Football Fan, you BET I get a kick out of THAT!"_* ), and those cinematics after beating each Castle.)
NEGATIVES
• *The Start of Mario Games Being Stupidly Simple* (Now, I don't think it's a *HORRIBLE* thing that Mario games since SMW are so easy. In fact, the game have the Kirby effect (The games, while piss-easy, are still tons of fun). But, like... (🤨 *_"I am at the 1st Castle stage, and I already have 20 lives. Overkill much? This isn't "New Super Mario Bros 2" , you know!"_* ) Even Wendy's castle and the Valley of Bowser I think are cakewalks!)
• *Not Enough Level Variety* (SMB3 this ain't. TONS of grass and caves with the occasional underwater level. Not listening level segments, there's only *ONE* ice level. *ONE!* I usually like the level themes in most Mario games since, even though they are typical Grass, Fire, Water, etc, it doesn't get repetitive at all. This game doesn't really have that, unfortunately.)
• *No Point in Obtaining Every Dragon Coin in the Game* (The GBA version fixes this by giving you a cutscene and changes the coins to show Peach instead of Yoshi. Still not worth it, but it's *something* .)
• *"TUBULAR"* (F%#@ THIS LEVEL! F%÷@ THIS LEVEL! F%$# THIS LEVEL!!!
Okay, so you're going through the stage as Balloon Mario. Problems!:
1. Balloon Mario is temporary (Not a *Huge* deal, something to keep in kind)
2. P-Balloons are scarce
3. *THERE'S A MILLION THINGS TRYING TO KILL YOU!!!*
Unless you've played that level, you have no idea how bullsh** it is. Challenge is one thing, but this is a freaking nightmare!)
Final Rating: 9.5/10
It's no wonder this game gets so much praise. It's *EXCELLENT!*
It's quite the trip back in my eyes.
My most favorite snes mario game ever as a kid
This game is the GOAT, not just the greatest Mario game ever, but also the greatest video game ever
Am I the only one that thinks that Super Mario World is one of the best games in the series?
Got my Super NES just after launch in August of 91 after my parents said I would have to pay half. I earned more than half and they got me F-Zero and Gradius 3 as well. My friends would come over all the time to play Super Mario World. My all time favorite Mario game! I still have my original Super NES complete with no yellowing whatsoever.
A SNES that never yellowed. You sir are a lucky fellow.
@@majakmajak7596 I earned the money to get it. It was my first major purchase. I took great care of it over the years and continue to do so. It has the original red on white 1-800 number customer service sticker on the back of the console with the two Mario's running towards each other and not the gray label seen through the rest of the life of the SNES. It's a prized possession in my collection!
good for you
@@majakmajak7596 Thx!
My very first video game. I remember how it took until the age of the Internet to find the last few exits of the game - the ones leading to Soda Lake and Valley Fortress, I believe.
Edit: Also, at 8:10 - I had no idea there was something up there, even after all these years!
This really is such a great game, and fantastic launch title for the SNES.
Thank you for uploading. I grew up with the PlayStation but remember a friend had Mario and it’s a bit nostalgic.
Loved discovering the secrets in this game. The blue yoshi broke the game so badly, lol.
Oh man, ikr? It was like the P-wing on steroids.
Mario actually still IS a popular franchise.

That one stage on the cliff overlooking Bowser Castle, that section I couldn't get enough of, calling it the Super Fun Happy Slide. Just saying the name brings back the good times with my brother. He would've been 33 in two month and two days.
You mean, "Donut Secret 2"? I also liked the view of Bowser's Castle the overworld gives us. It's a neat touch.
@@Dorian_Scott That's right. Never had a boring time replaying that stage.
I like how all the Special Stages are all words used by cool people. Surprised "Radical" wasn't one of them.
Me too. It really is funny to think that those words were actually slang at the time. Kinda cringey, too.
I believe they were named differently in the Japanese version; I don't remember their exact names but I think they were named more along the lines of the difficulty level you were playing with. In fact... ~ka-google~
...oh wow! Okay, I think I can see why they changed it. Weirdly enough, it looks like they took FOUR level names instead of eight, and just used them all twice each - not even a "2" to differentiate 'em. Plus I don't think "Even The Mario Staff Is Shocked Course" would've fit in the text box (and why wouldn't you have that as stages 7 and 8 instead of 3 and 4?!).
@@NintendoComplete Eh, every ten years, we look back twenty and wonder how the hell we convinced ourselves the slang of the times wasn't. The circle of pop culture! (Guarantee ya we'll be cringing at 'cringey' in 2030!)
@@YukaTakeuchiFan I certainly believe it. I already cringe at the word cringey. I was just too lazy too type out "cringe inducing." I thank God Nintendo never had Mario utter the word "beyotch" or refer to coins as hot bling. That'd be mad sus.
@@YukaTakeuchiFan For me, it's every 5 years. It's so hard to not cringe at lots of outdated slang. Very few terms I think aged okay, like *_"Bogus"_* , *_"Bodacious"_* , and *_"Radical"_* . But then you have stuff like using the word *_"not"_* in a sarcastic way... (😑 Uhhh...).
I loved supermario

[Notices Mario Moving Along to the Music] *_"Stand Back, Bowser's Troops! Mario's gotten Koji Kondo Fever!"_*
Truthfully NC. I was unimpressed on Super Mario World to convinced me to purchase a Super Nintendo. I was (like many) still enjoying many hours of Super Mario Bros 3 for the NES and that game was still hot on the market over a year later here in North America. I recall the uproar that this game cause by irate parents saying that its just an updated version of SMB3, but now you had to spent a few hundred dollars that required you to spend for a new console in order to play SMW. Don't get me wrong, it's an enjoyable game, but wasn't enough for me to buy a whole new unit just to play it.
On the other hand, the game that made me so excitingly to do so was F-Zero. Totally stunned me on how the music, the fast pace, and futuristic it was. Everything was so perfect, and the manual just fantastic with the history of F-Zero and a comic it included inside of it as well.
The bonafide classic that came with everyone's SNES at the beginning, felt a little strange the first time I played it as it also felt epic as well The newness novelty has long worn off, and it no longer feels odd, but imagine the first time you are playing the console, and you see the Mode 7, the scaling of the Bowser sprite at the end, and the sprite scaling and rotation in other games. Something you only ever saw at that time in Namco arcades games, and a select few Taito arcade games.
You'd think after all these years Bowser would learn his lesson.
I have this on my New 3DSXL and I love it!
Nice shout-out to the Baby Rage in SMW2 in the description.
“[ _Super Mario World_ ] was the last of the ‘S-tier’ 2D _Super Mario_ games.”

I discovered Super Mario World for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in the early 90's, in 1991.
