  • In the 4th episode in our “Who is a Runner” series, in collaboration with Camp4 Collective, Erin McGrady shares how running gives her “the courage to have hope”. Growing up adopted, queer and with undiagnosed depression, Erin McGrady learned sports could be a positive outlet for her. In college she discovered running could lift the “heavy blanket” she sometimes felt and has been running ever since. “I know if I can get out the door, I know I’m going to be better.” Her and her wife, Caroline Whatley, run Authentic Asheville, a blog and content creation company that also creates queer-friendly travel guides for dapperQ magazine. And, for six months out of the year, they travel together across the US in their van, running and exploring safe spaces for the LGBTQ+ community. Watch the latest #WhoIsARunner video now.

I’ve never been more proud. You’ve turned your experiences, the good and the bad, into visual and oral poetry here. It takes bravery, self-acceptance, and love, to share with the world what you’ve learned after years of hard work and reflection. Not many people have the strength to show vulnerability and the grit to press on like you have. ❤️

You’re my inspiration, Erin McGrady. We grew up together, and then we grew to learn and help each other. The vulnerability that you’ve displayed here defines courageousness. Take a leap on over here to Florida. St. Petersburg would love your visit. And yes, we’d love to see you and your wife hold hands, and kiss each other in our city. I hope to see you soon.

Erin ... I am only half way through the video and already in tears. Thank you for sharing the power of running and the immense impact that it can have on clinical depression. As a member of your "Team Mixed Tapes" Ragnar crew, I am proud to have been a small part of your running journey !

Teresa! I'm so glad we are still connected. It's been wonderful to see your success and your journey as well. Thank you for sharing from the heart. I hope we get to run again together some day. I wear my Brooks Ragnar shirt at least once a week. One of my fondest running memories...Thanks for being such a strong and positive force for good my friend.
