Everybody from the alternative music sphere in the '90s was doing '60s retro (either though their music or their styling); DeeeLite, Pulp, The Cardigans, St. Etienne, Oasis etc... so what Beck was doing here was not particularly original.....Heavy Metal or Hair Metal was/is a valid musical subculture with a huge and devoted following, so it's a bit sneery and snooty of Beck to be using them here with humorous/derisive intent in his "cool and ironic" video.
This may be my favorite track/video he ever did. Everything's just balls on, from the mod stuff to the hair metal to the Kraftwerk to the lush perfume commercial ambience of that sax solo.

If you haven't heard any of his early albums I'd strongly recommend giving them a listen sometime, especially the album tracks. A lot of his singles were mediocre, but his albums as whole pieces are some of my favourite stuff.

Saw Beck onstage in London back in 1997, he is a tremendous live performer. If Sheldon from " The Big Bang Theory" had watched Jackie Wilson on "Shindig!" and listened to trip-hop, this would be the ultimate conclusion. Superb. "Odelay" remains a true gem, twenty years after its' release.
I haven't heard or thought about this song in years. Suddenly, this morning the opening choir notes started whistling from my mouth like a Casio keyboard. It took me about 5 minutes to figure out who it was that had invaded my head. I can't explain it, just weird. So I took it as a sign and put it into one of my playlists.
