- Join me on the adventure of a lifetime as I (an American) try and review New Zealand fish and chips! Is it really as good as the Kiwis say it is? What's the hype about? Have we (American's) been missing out this the whole time?!?!
Watch this video to answer any of those questions or any other questions that you may have!
Thank you for watching the video! If you enjoy this video please make sure to leave a Like and Subscribe if you aren't already!!!
and let me know in the comments, do you like fish & chips?
A British CZcamsr and his wife came to New Zealand and the wife ordered fish and chips for lunch. She leaned over to her British husband and said " I think New Zealand makes fish and chips better than England where they were invented." Her husband looked down sad and said "Yeah I Know".
True bubs
Of course we do it's like a British assembled xj40 jag vs New Zealand assembled... It's the same just better!
The main difference is that they cook the fish and chips when you order it in NZ, while in the UK it's generally pre-cooked, sitting in a vat. The NZ fish is nicer as well for some reason.
It's the same story in Australia.
NZ and Australian seafood tends to be much, much, better than the UK.
I suspect it's a combination of very fresh local fish, Australian sunflower oil at exactly the right temperature, a well made beer batter and chefs who really care about the overall quality 👍
@@edwardfletcher7790As a proud Aussie I have to concede NZ does fish and chips way better than us!
If you are not consuming within minutes then rip a ventilation hole in the top to release the steam. Stops them from going soft and soggy.
True Bro
Pineapple fritter with cinnamon sugar and ice cream is the best
Yeah, that's a killer combo 👍😁
A banana fritter is better
@@megandunell399they are both yummy together ❤😂
@@megandunell399@megandunell399 Now, did we all forget that Kiwi original... the Fried Moro Bar!!!!! Those were special, but only back when Cadbury made the Moro Bar in Dunedin...
Ok guys, this is just getting a bit out of control now. This escalated fast. We started with a pineapple ring, now we are talking banana fritters and ice-cream.
Glad you enjoyed it and thank you for showing off my beautiful country. It’s also obvious you’re making an effort on the pronunciation around Paua. Keep doing your thing brother 💪🏾
Mate no worries fish n chips are a eat with hands meal. By the way you are in Wellington during Winter, yup it rains. Get ready for July/ August wet and cold, just remember you can't beat Wellington on a good day. Keep up the videos Brock we will make a Kiwi out of you eventually.
Nelson is way better in winter. Than wellington
Haha can always beat Wellington. Wakatu is way better.
Have good Wellington friends who spent a year overseas for work.
When they came back they said, that the wellington saying about a good day is now Bollocks, way over-rated,, and they are parochial.
@@grunta64 Yep, always has been a jest at the reality that the best days in Wellington aren't really all that, but you get the odd stunner that makes it all worth it haha.
Yeah bro just lick your fingers and wipe it on the paper after! I laughed at the fork 😂
You pronounced paua correctly. I'm surprised you took the risk to try the paua fritter especially at that price but glad you liked it.
Power is the way alot usually say it. 😅
@@uapnz0698I’ll say. My plastic ass Māori kids get scared when we have kai Moana for a feed. Good on the young lad for trying the Pāua. Next try a kina for my entertainment 😂
@Lilfauntleroyswampson1121 keeeNarrghh 😆 🤣 😂. Yes good on him, and he was into it! which is even better.
a tub of fresh minced Paua (around $20 - $25) and make your own fritters. you will find the difference incredible !
I agree with your score, tartare sauce can wreck a good fish & chips. A squeeze of Lemon & some tomato sauce on the side is enough 😋
Def fingeetip test taste first 😊
Might have been aoli?
Malt vinegar!
As a kiwi in Asia, the tartare sauce here is almost always too sweet. If I get a good one though, I think it compliments the fish and chips. This obviously wasn't good.
@@Gavbro0my father always & only ate fish n chips with malt vinegar....it's a classic 😂🎉😂
Eating fish and chips with your hands is the only way to enjoy that goodness
Legit said that the moment I seen that fork dig in to the fish😂😂😂
Don’t think I’ve ever had a feed of fish and chips without ending with a pineapple ring! The best!
Luv fish and chips with alolea sauce, fantastic.
A little Info to set you Straight. "Paua" is the same as what a lot of other Countries Call Abalone. However, the Kiwi "Paua" is pure & in it's Natural State. Most Abalone is Dyed White as the People who decide such things deem the Black meat to be unappetising. One thing you will find in NZ is that most Seafood (Kai Moana) is caught fresh around the Coast & it's best when not played around with. You can expect to pay a Premium Price for Premium Types as you are competing with the Price the Producer can get for Export Product. There are some lesser Products that either don't appeal to the Export Market or there is not the same Demand. But Any Fresh Fish is good & a common Fish in Fish & Chip Shops like Hoki or Lemon Fish is still tasty, without the Delicateness of Flavour in Snapper, Orange Roughy, Terakihi & Blue Cod. Gurnard & John Dory are Middle Range Fish for Flavour but are a Ridiculous Price. When I was growing up We ate Snapper etc & the Cats got Gurnard. Nowadays, Gurnard costs as much as Terakihi, only slightly less than Snapper (at the Time of Writing $4 a Kilo less). Fish & Chips was a Traditional Friday Night Dinner for the Family & it was a Cheap meal for Mum, Dad & 2-4 Children. During the 70's & 80's, the Arrival of KFC which was really Good back then, McDonalds & International Type Eateries, Asian, Curries, Kebabs, Italian etc Takeaways, enticed people away from Fish & Chips, resulting in less Proper Fish & Chip Shops & the necessity in Slashing the Quality of the Rood, that dreaded Circle of Competitive Price Versus Quality & Quantity which loses even more Customers.
If you are heading down to the South Island, the Further South you go from Dunedin, you will encounter NZ's best kept Secret when it comes to Fish & Chips, Blue Cod. You don't often find it in The North Island & when you do it's probably been Frozen, but as it Frozen straight from the Sea it's still far better than most other Product. It is very similar to Fresh Snapper & Flakes into Beautiful tasting White fish fillets, Succulent, with the creamy taste of the Sea. If you're down there in the Bluff Oyster Season, 1/2 doz Battered Bluff Oysters lightly cooked & 2 pieces of Battered Blue Cod is a Seafood Lovers Dream.
Paua is an awkward marine gastropod molluscs. It's not a True Sea Snail but neither is it a True Mollusc as it only has 1 shell, unlike true Mollusc such as Mussels, Clams, Scallops & Oysters with which NZ abounds. Normal Sea Slugs & Snails usually protrude from their Shells, retreating back into their Shells when there is obvious Danger, much like their land based Cousins. It's just referred to as Paua or in any Fine Dining Establishments "NZ Abalone".
If you make it to Auckland, The Fish Pot Café in Mission Bay was one of the Best Places for Fish & Chips, if it's still there. Apart from there, most Wet Fish Shops (Fishmongers) do Fish & Chips with the added bonus that you can Select your Fillet & they will cook it for you for a small fee, rather than paying for an unknown piece of Fish.
Happy Travels & Bon Appetite!
actually Paua is deep fried car tire rubber how people eat this awful stuff is beyond intelligence but its a huge export to Hong Kong for some reason
@@nikkster01 trust me if you've had one actually cooked good you'll see why so many people like it 😁
@@nikkster01 You have Obviously Never tried Paua that's been Cooked Properly. What you are eating is the actual Muscle of the Paua, with all the Gut & other Bits & Pieces removed. It is what Anchors the Animal to the Rock, of course it's going to be Tough. There's 2 ways of dealing with a Paua, You either Beat the Hell out of it to tenderise it (My Mother used the old Heavy Rolling Pin) or you can Mince it. I actually soak them in a little water & Baking Soda for 10 mins, rinse well & Mince it. The added advantage of Mincing means a little goes a long way. I make Fritters with a 3rd of it & Cream the Rest. Fantastic! Tender & the Unique taste you can get nowhere else.
Do they dye white abalone white?
Really well said my friend. We’re so lucky here!!
I’m based on the North Shore and have access to East and West Coast beaches with little travel time.
The paua down South is imo the tastiest. Creamed paua and crusty bread to dip it into… 🤤 🤤 🤤 YES MATE
I am glad you got a real paua fritter, There are some dicey ones out there.
Yes I want to see it frozen n ask a few questions first😊 5.90
You're not kidding! Most paua fritters are made from what we Maori call the 'hua' and very little paua meat. It's a rip off mostly. If you can find one that's just paua then count yourself lucky. That would be a real treat which I'd happily pay $15+ for!
So am I...I wanted this guy to be served up the genuine article and he was. Love it when our visitors give us the thumbs up..makes me proud!
Interesting, I must try a "real" paua fritter one day. I remember the so called paua fritters we would get a couple of times a year back when I was at boarding school (in Timaru), and they were disgusting, almost no-one ate them.....haven't wanted to try paua since, but this video has changed my mind.
An American lady came in to my local fish and chip shop in the king country, saw the Paua in it's shell and said "what's that". She bought 3 Paua for 65 dollars cause she had never tried it. Never found out what she thought of it.
Well I'm a New Zealander and I have eaten quite a lot of Fish and Chips meals over the 80 years here in NZ, but I must concede, that when I worked in Grand Prairie in Texas USA back in the late 1990s - 2000, I use to go a Captain "D" Fish and Chip shop and get some Fish and Chips for my lunch meal once a week. They too put the Fish and Chips into a box and I use to walk back to work to eat it, they were great Fish and Chips and I enjoyed them very much indeed.
Did you ever try The Hamburger Cafe, Timaru near the Caroline Bay area in the 50s? Us kids would go in after the Saturday flicks and get 6d worth of f & c, and quite a decent lot at that, although I suspect that the fish was thinly sliced kingfish!
In Dunedin, it was the "Best Cafe" down by the Court House... Many an eloquent and occasionally irreverent lawyer graced that place at least once. My last Bluff Oyster meal was consumed there... a full dozen with "Maori Gravy? with a dash from a bottle of James Watties tomato sauce!!!!
When visiting NZ from Perth, Australia in the late 1960s I made the mistake of ordering an Australian-sized ($1) serve of chips. Needed both arms to carry away the HUGE bundle - enough to feed at least a family of 5 - and they were magnificent.
LoL your dry sense of humour. Welcome to NZ brother 😁
I swear I fall even more in love with you after every clip I watch 😂😂. Your bluntness and logical ways are just so fricken... 🙌🤭 Yep!
Dad & I were keen fishermen in the 60’s .. we used to get an assortment of reef fish, snapper, sweet lip, red rock cod, squire, in winter we went fishing for whiting, beautiful sweet fish, we would catch between 50 & 100 (big job scaling, gutting & filleting) but the were delicious fried in egg & bread crumbs. The best fish I ever had was Perl Perch ❤. I’m 72 now & finding it harder & harder to get nice F&C now in Australia.😔
Corfu Karori is one of the best Fish & Chips shops in Wellington!
Go back & try one their burgers…
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome to see your channel doing so well Brock! 😃
Well done on your pronunciation of Paua.
NZ fish & chips are some of the best I have ever had.
You just had an internal service done.
An oil and greez .
You're good to go until the next cravings 😋 usually on a Friday around teatime.
I'd definitely be keen to hear your thoughts on New Zealand ice cream. I know it's winter but Kiwis do ice cream year round are the world's largest consumers of ice cream (8 gallons per person). In Wellington, Duck Island on Cuba Street is hand's down the most popular spot for ice cream, followed by Kaffee Eis which does gelato. For maximum flavour options, I'd recommend getting a Flight (8 flavours) from Duck Island or a half litre (4 flavours) from Kaffee Eis. 🙏
This dud makes me miss NZ food so much! Nice work❤️
2 things I miss during NZ winters in Thailand--- a good meat pie and decent fish and chips. 1st meal back home is takeaways from Oppies in Rotorua.
Great video! Nice, simple, great to watch.
All Kiwis know that the best fush-n-chups, are wrapped in paper, and are enjoyed with brown vinegar, salt and tomato sauce. You also enjoyed the fattest Paua fritter ever. They are normally prepared very thin, due to the cost of the Paua
Ahh, old school fish and chips. Tear a hole in one end of the wrapped fish and chips and enjoy! Have to admit though I do like the new evolution of putting them in a shallow box, then encased in a paper bag with a couple of slits cut in the top. Then when you get home, everything is still super crispy coz the steam could escape. And yeah agreed, the Paua was expensive but looked thicc!! And was also all paua, no filler.
That’s a good fritter, they have obviously got a fresh source for all their seafood, I’m from Wellington but live in Auckland now, that pāua is def $13 on todays market sadly inflation has robbed the youth of their fish and chips we used to get 5 potatoe fritters for 10c back in the day after swimming we’d walk home from swimming in the freezing cold and spend our train fare on potatoe fritters as they were more filling than chips. You are doing such a great job sourcing good places and I love you googled picnic table, am going to start doing that too. ❤
Initially I was surprised about the prices. But then I saw what you got for your money. The serving of snapper (fish) was really big. The Paua (abalone) patty was full of the meat, and large to generous. Both are expensive in NZ. So I think you got a great deal. I wish I was in Karori, Wellington to check a similar meal out!!!!
Some fish and chip outfits put very little Paua into their patty's..... your Paua patty looked like a luxury patty.
Also, they do have Paua (abalone) in the southern areas of Australia. I don't know if they feature them in fish and chip shops tho......
At over $100 per kg that fritter was good value for money
Cannot stop making comments only this night is my first watching you.But you are a breath of fresh air to my soul. Thanks so much for your channel I like
Where most cooks make a mistake with pineapple fritters is they use canned pineapple, but if you get a dead ripe pineapple peel it and cut a good thick chunk, the fritter will be amazing. You can even make pineapple chunks deep fried in batter, that you can make bit sized!
Best fish "n" chips in New Zealand I think every town has a best fish "n" chips shop 🍻
Not Whakatane lol. They have a best of the worst fish and chips shop.
Paua is Abalone. It's actually endangered in California (or it was) and really fancy chefs are only allowed to harvest a couple a year. You can get it canned but it's bleached, processed, and often from places where the water quality isn't as good. You got to try the real thing. Also, the mayo you get in NZ is sweeter than US mayo, so if the sweeter mayo was used in making the tarter sauce that would be the reason for the different flavour.
Thank you for watching! Also, thank you for the information!
If you're in the Hutt Valley, Harbour City Seafoods in the Maungaraki shops is widely regarded as one of the best in Wellington. Recently sold by the long time owners but the new owners were taught by them and seem to have learned the way to do it.
Yeah, 20 years out of NZ, drooling at the sight of your paua fritter in particular, and the rest of your fried kiwi goodness 😊
White bait fritters are the closet thing to heaven
Loved the video mate! Cheers get ready for the welly weather!
Your voice is so chilled an you're a great advertisement for NZ,💯👍
Appreciate that! Thanks for watching!
Aussie here nearly dinner time watching an American eating NZ Fish and Chips! Am drooling.. I have been to NZ many times and yeah their food is so good! 😋
Skip the tartare sauce - a squeeze of lemon juice or drops of vinegar on the fish and try some tomato sauce next time especially on the chips!
Your videos are hell fun man keep up the good work haha.
Fish and chips, Paua fritter and Pineapple fritter 👍
now you have to try dipping the chips in mince n cheese pie :)
Best fish and chips are From the' Fresh Fish Market ' Tauranga
Been there, done that, loved it!
I'm a local there, and can confirm it's very good - consistently quality seafood and chips cooked perfectly. Just watch out for the seagulls if you eat there on the wharf!
They the best I tried 💯
Yeah, fish and chips shops don't cook anything until you order it. Everything is cooked right in front of you. NZ fish & chips are the best in the world. Maybe it's the pacific fish, maybe it's the cook, maybe both. Our pies are world class too.
One burger outlet you haven't tried is Burger Fuel, great burgers, especially the Bastard Burger, YUM!
Bastard Burger, YUM. I don't want any of those little fu......kers. Do expect to wait as they are made fresh as well.
In the Wellington region you can get great fish and chips if you head north to the Kapiti coast . Eat on the beach
I tried Arthur Treachers "Best fish and chips in the world" while in the USA in 1981, and I'm still digesting the ghastly soggy chips. NZ do have the best "greasies" (as they are called in the best circles.)
Island bay fish ahop down the beach end. Best in wellies and a great beach stop to eat them at, literally round the corner❤
Keep on keeping on Brock 👊😋👍
Great video as always - I'm from NZ and never had a paua fritter, so good on you for going for it!
Yeah, if you find a really good shop our fish and chips are amazing. We have different fish varieties in different parts of the country, and the best shops always have super fresh fish.
Your tartare sauce might actually have been aioli if it was sweeter than expected. Tartare sauce should taste a bit stronger than aioli sauce.
Good luck with the channel cuzzy bro 👍 😊
Just noticed I pop up on the mentions screen. Thanks mate 🎉😂 look forward to the next adventure. 👍
My confusion seeing only 2.7k subscribers..
Loving your videos man welcome to New Zealand
Hey Tom, try the Duck Island icecream shop in Cuba Street in Wellington. My recommendation would be Boysenberry Cheesecake. Soooo good!! They give you free tastings. Also in Hamilton and two stores in Auckland.
I love my potato fritters, (deep fried spud slices) they are a staple. In the south island we call them "flips" 😊
I like flips too but here in Oz they call them potato scallops 😂
As a kid in Western Australia we had a fish and chip shop in the neighbourhood owned by an English family. They called them potato fritters. I would later find other shop's calling them potato cakes.
@@colincrowther7777 yes I've had "Scallops" when I was in Sydney and Brisbane over the years. They were awesome.
Funny dude 😂 enjoy your stay bro 👍🏾👊🏾
One of my favorites is batter fried oysters
Pacific Oysters are pretty nice in batter when Bluff are out of season
I find it amazing that anywhere that is not the UK or the US has the best food in the world. lol
Fresh, and preferably local fresh, ingredients are the key to the best of any food in any part of the world.
Even with all of the instructions and recipes from the Jamie Olivers, Bobby Flays, Bella Contessas, Rachael Rays, and even with Gordon Ramsey screaming and swearing at everyone, it is still unbelievable that 2 of the most prosperous countries in the world insist on ruining the food by making sure that it is not fresh.
I was worried for a second when you tried the Pāua fritter, thank goodness the Fish n chip shop you went to was the right one 👌
excellent video mate glad you love our fish n chips !, the Paua is expensive to purchase as is why its expensive to buy as a fast food, looked amazing though...and no one is mentioning the stunning background of kiwi bush !!..love my country :)
The paua is harder to get it with fishing restrictions -it has always been more expensive as a special treat. Jewelery is made out of paua shell but the outside after polishing it.
Tauranga ,Walf fish & chips greatest❤
Note to American viewers :
He's quoting NZ $ dollars.
Which are almost half US $ dollars.
Eg : US$12 gets you NZ$20 !!
$35nz is very expensive.
@@Backwardseelespecially for just one person
@@lachlanabel5864 It's only US$20 and he probably got a drink too.
Remember the deep fried Abalone was NZ$12 by itself, they're an expensive delicacy like a 6 x size oyster.
@@lachlanabel5864 $30 would feed the family 15 years ago

Try Bobby's fish shop on the warf downtown Tauranga, yum.
Paua and pineapple fritters are amazing. They've been around for so long, glad you liked them.
My favourite way to eat Paua is cooked with garlic, mushrooms, lemon and cream. Have a fresh baguette to soak up the left over sauce.
I'm personally not a fan of paua, but lots of friends love it, glad to see your paua fritter was a good one. Battered mussels, now that I can get behind 100%. Hopefully you're around for whitebait season, then you can have a completely different fish and chip shop experience.
Great vids you put up of our good food
So glad you liked Fish and Chips !! :)
Pretty safe place to have fish and chips as the fish is literally off the boat. Yum!
DELICIOUS!!!
Safe Journey!
Have a GREAT DAY!!!
I bet they are cooked in toxic canola or veg oil and not the good ole beef dripping which is the best for cooking fish n chips
Fun watch!! You should try with Watties Tomato Sauce. Yummy!!
When ordering chips you can order them the way you like them. If you like them super crispy just ask for 'extra crispy' or 'extra fry time'. Some people like them soft (strange) so ask for them soft.
been watchin since the beginning, bros getting hella views now
When you get to the South Island, one of NZ’s best fish and chip shops is in Akaroa. You must see Akaroa anyway.
I’m from Tauranga nz and when we get our chips we always add chicken salt makes them way better
Chicken salt is amazing on chips😘
Often mayonnaise in NZ is sweeter than USA mayo..
if your having trouble finding paua in the usa? its called abalone.
and kumara is sweet potato.
get a chance to eat fried bread. its made with potato flour.
On ya mate
I know exactly where you are Brock - My good mate's house is in your background. Enjoy your travels, and thanks for sharing
Best in the World. First on my list every time I go back to NZ.
So can you tell me the taste difference between your guys abalone which is white & nz abalone (paua) ,,i've never had the chance to try the white abalone .is there a big difference in taste ?
Shark and taties, sweet as bro!😁😁
I loved them when beef dripping used to be used. Tasted really good. It's oil now.
My goodness that looked yum. I have never tried a paua fritter but definitely want to now.
Awesome Brock yeah its a hit and miss you definitely want to go somewhere that is good and yes you are pronouncing paua correctly 👏💯😉
Wellington has many great places to eat. You should try R&S Noodle house and get a Mee goreng. Or go to Moera and get some famous ice cream. You’ll also find an award winning fish n chip shop in Moera to.
If you get down south, try the fish and chips in Waikouaiti.
I always stop there when Im ppassing through.
Fush and Chups... lol I am Australian poking fun at NZers
I always used to use a fork to eat the fish and chips when I moved here 14 years ago and now, after much ribbing from my kiwi friend, I use my hands 😅
Blue Island seafood in Waterloo has the most legendary Chicken Roti wraps. There’s standard flavour and satay. They are both REALLY good.
and the best fish and chips
Add ice cream with your pinapple fritter , the kids fav.
Imo there are two types of fish and chip shops in NZ. There are the fancy ones in a great location who cater to the trendy / more affluent and there are the ones in the suburbs who feed the masses on the regular. This second type can be hit and miss but we all know the good one in our locality.
If you are in Auckland, roughly in the Airport vicinity, try Kiwi Takeaways on Puhinui Road in Papatoetoe. They are consistently good for fried foods, but their burgers are just OK. You will get Hoki and chips for well under $10. Snapper is available at a premium but reasonable cost and is excellent.
Do not be afraid to try some foods from other cultures in the less affluent suburbs of Wellington - Porirua for example. Ask around and find some Island food outlets
As a local to the area, can I give u the bakery and the combo to order from? It’s in Porirua which is the hood of the whole Wellington area, go to the Waitangirua Bakery and order a Filled Roll (Chicken is my preference), Pizza Stick (Warm), Pork and Egg pastry, Steak and Cheese pie. And also get a custard pie and a tray of coconut buns (Panipopo) for the sweet side. All I’m going to say is it’s a 20/10 feed that u will be thanking me later for. Go during the morning preferably
We also do beer better than mother England and it's cold.
You should try Fang’s, also in Karori!
Abalone is all over the ocean floor . We just got massive buggers around NZ
