  • Since it opened in 1836 Mount Jerome Cemetery has witnessed over 300,000 burials. Some wealthy families spent small fortunes creating impressive monuments to commemorate their dead and display their wealth. The cemetery has one of the finest collections of funerary art in Ireland.
This video looks at some of the splendid monuments that mark the final resting place of deceased patriots, artists, merchants, and government officials. The cemetery has witnessed over 300,000 burials, the second highest number of burials of any cemetery Ireland.

Thank you. I’ve alway been looking for history of this beautiful cemetery. I wandered around it as a youth and couldn’t believe the beauty of it all.

This was overwhelming yet respectful for so many buried in Dublin. This is my first introduction to the cemeteries around Dublin. I look forward to a great many more of your videos. Bravo and well done from one whose ancestors reside in the Free State of Ireland and the separate Northern Ireland.

I inadvertently eliminated a few comments, one of which was about the possibility of a factual error in the video. I would love to be able to read that comment again. Thanks, David

Thank you Stephen Graham for pointing out that an image of the 7th Earl Longford (Edward) and his wife was incorrectly shown when discussing the relationship between the 6th Earl (Frank) and his wife with the Gate Theatre. Frank succeeded his brother Edward as Earl in 1961. David
